  • Astounding! Thanks for the heads up @scarycath & @prestonreed!

  • This is one of the wildest jazz pieces i've heard along Coltrane's 'A love supreme' and Tania Maria's 'Yatra-ta'.

    Awesome!!!!

  • One of the best concerts I ever caught. And I have heard many.....

  • あっつい!あつすぎる!

  • rythm section is weak (drums and bass)

  • This song is full of life.Piano and vibes collaborating to make a very drastic mood to it.I like the fact that McCoy stopped playing during Hutcherson's solo.Only few very quiet chords in the background.I like to see that partnership because when both musicians go back to the theme of the song it's makes it more effective and energetic in this case.

  • Energy in its purest forms!

  • amazing song ... when i hear this i can imagine an african village where the people are dancing and happy :D

  • Wow, Asian Brides for you busizz4me.info

  • Imagine if they got a gig and did this in a remote African Village, say, in the Congo. And after a wild night of music, they packed up and disappeared into the dawn. Would that village ever be the same?

  • i love mc coy

  • the man in the bass is a beast!!!!

  • @theplayboyabdier

check out roland kirk - say a little prayer (live) for a beasting bass player

  • Hutch is the greatest vibist/marimba player of all time. He comes from Bags groove and his stuff with Herbie during the Blue Note days is timeless. The consumate artist and genius.

  • Ma-gni-fi-que!!!

  • The more i listen to McCoy Tyner the more I like his music.

  • @PsychoticIntensity

As a teen in the 70's, I had no idea who he was or that he'd been around for so long. My Dad worked at a radio station & one day brought home a Promo Copy double album called "Supertrios." When I put Side 1, Track 1 ("The Greeting" as I recall) on, I wasn't quite sure what to expect. Do I focus on his left hand or right? I chose left, since he was doing so much with it that was new to my ears. Both hands make for such a full sound, though.

  • When was this?

  • Drummer on the Album version was Elvin Jones, Phoned Jazz FM on the day they were launched to request it, thinking they wouldnt play the whole track. Once it started they didnt know where to stop lol

  • drummer on the original was actually Freddie Waits. Maybe there's a recording since then with Elvin though.

  • Bobby's solo on this is transcendent.

  • Anyone know when this was recorded?

(Gotta play this with my band!)

  • This is it. B e a u t i f u l

  • what a treat to see four such completely consumate muscians together........it's truly higher level stuff

  • Que maravilla, Mc Coy.

  • McCoy & Hutch! Two giants! Man, I can watch this all day!

  • This enriches my day and youtube. Thanks for posting these master musicians making dynamic music.

  • incomparable. seeing these two together is great.

  • Who is the drummer? He is killin it.

  • pretty sure it's eric harland

  • best pianist alive today...

  • In some ways he is the Billy Cobham of the keys. Always placing control and tone over speed and complexity but can also do interesting things. I have never really heard any other piano player come close to his style.

  • I fucking love McCoy Tyner.

  • Bobby killed on this!

  • やばい、超カッコイイ。

  • this tune is truly a reason to live

  • A buddy of mine transcribed this...one chorus is 172 bars I think...

  • Formidable!!

  • YES!

  • Africa is a continent from where so many influences spread globally. Many of which are still not credited because of status quo stupidity and tunnel visions. This music helps remind one of feels that cannot be matched by most who claim to play jazz. This is a true improv exhibition.

  • I did not see the comment before, but to modes9, no you are not the only one. I play Burtons grip, but I like Hutcherson more, Thank You. & Tybers stuff on Blue note, Hutchersons-Those were some crankin' tunes God bless gifted men like this who give us their gift. I have listened to this so much, I was glad when it came out on cd, my lp was worn

  • All I can say is this was such a line up. I have more Bobby Hutcherson, Mccoy tyner cd's that any of my others. I try to play vibes, It sounds right on hitting the high notes on vibes for this song. He is my favorite vibist & I have heard many, yet I never have seen him. Great Stuff

  • Hutch is the man on the vibes. Even Tyner stated Hutch was one of the most gifted musicians in the world.

  • Am I the only one who likes Bobby more than Gary Burton?

  • No.

  • No X2---Hutch is the MAN on vibes....no one can touch him for chops or compositionaly. He was a major force on dozens of BlueNote sessions in the 60's that still are the best jazz you'll find. Gary who?

  • I saw Moffett and Stanley Jordan with will calhoun on drums feb 20 2009 in NYC.That place was out of control,I never saw so many dropped jaws in my life

  • I'm getting a private lesson from Moffett tomorow! SOOOOO exited!!!!

  • Is this on any of his albums?

  • Time for Tyner.

  • Such a killing album - that tune May Street!!! Hahahaha. SO nasty

  • if harland was born 30 years earlier... the original recording would have been 10 times better... freddie waits (R.I.P) sounds watery in comparison

  • How Disgusting of you to say such a thing and the have the audacity to put rest in peace. I bet you a million dollars that not one person in this band thinks that or will ever. You need to wake up pal. and think before you comment!!!!!

  • Freddie Waits is a beast!! Don't compare this live recording to a studio recording from back in the day. Just appreciate each for what they are. I agree with Mr. Sanders. I'm sure Eric Harland would be the first to praise Freddie Waits. I'm sure he continues to learn from Mr. Waits and all the other greats who came before him.

  • These are musical shamans.

  • OK all of you mccoy tyner experts, which one of his solo albums is worth buying?

  • My favorite is "Echoes of a Friend," recorded in Japan in 1972. It's fabulous from beginning to end.

  • Okay slowly

this music is Is Big Music

    nothing to laugh

The Spirit of Coltrane is a Timeless Serious High Groove Music other Music sounds like Kindergarten when I hear THIS

    Grazie

  • why has the picture squashed up? ("I am crushing your head")

  • Yes very tyner, he can't shake off coltrane's influence (not thet he should) and moffett is a blast!

  • Anybody knows who is the drumer1? DAMN!!!

  • eric harland

  • THANKS!!

  • Thank you for posting this video! What a rare treat!

  • Two great Jazz Master from the 60s,these are two musicians that helped define the BLUENOte sound.

  • anyone got this on dvd?. I'll swap it for my house.

  • I'll tell you what, I'll find the DVD for you. Keep your house!!! LOL! :-)

  • @teetpiece best comment on youtube

  • for the rest of it (pt 3) see daily motion(google it)

  • saw mccoy tyner with dexter gorden at capital jazz festival (81 or 82 I think) but nowhere near as on fire as this!!

  • these brothers are tight!

    what happen to Part 3?

  • I first met McCoy Tyner in Houston, spring of '92. I asked him autograph the album from which this song comes, "Time For Tyner"; '68 on Blue Note, recorded live at a Coltrane Tribute concert in 'Trane's home state of NC. He offered to sign the back of the album cover, so as not to write over the picture of his face on the front! My favorite jazz pianist!!

  • where's part 3

  • Man I met him in DC at Blues Alley he was playing with Pharoah Sanders after the Gig he mingle in sat at allot of tables with customers and just chilled. He is the Master of any event.

  • quite extraordinary!!!

  • ¡¡Excelente!! melodia bellisima

  • This version of African Village is an excellent example of what Jazz is all about..taking something that is old and giving it a fresh look. I have always liked McCoy and Bobby's approach to the art form going back over 40+years. Now with the bass players innovative and phenomenal technique and the drummers fluid style with a foundation that is well thought out and tasteful..this old tune will always be "Live", when musicians who understand the music give it another go. excellent choice YouTube

  • absolutely!! very well said

  • Great! I love this...

  • BassThrasher, it's 6/8. Great groove and solos

  • man

  • this gets me so amped

  • really exhilerating music, like being on a boat in swiftly-moving water!! thank you so much.

  • Speechless... brilliant performance

  • Argotero - YOU said it just like i would!!! great music!!!! i hope i see any of them live...

  • This African Village, is something else far from music and time, the melody is esencial, but the bass line with Tyner´s left hand and drum part make a totally orquestral arrenge, that brings the music to a magical moment, that we have the pleasure to hear.

Thanks very much for this music from real 4 masters, at the end bass player he goes out of this world, for sure he lives a special moment in this performence. This is piur music........

  • Bobby Hutcherson is my uncle and I am so proud of that!

This is the first time I saw this performance and I must say this is totally incredible! Enjoy the masters

  • if booby hutcherson was my uncle I would try to follow him around everywhere!

  • If you want to check some treasures from Bobby Hutcherson, check "Live at the Vilage Vanguard" re-issued by 32 Jazz or the piece called "Isn't this my sound around me?" on "Manhattan Moods"

  • McCoy is pure thunder! Seeing him in concert is a treasure.

  • fuckin rad.....

  • I have followed these masters for years, what a pleasure to see them together in this great song from an early Tyner album

  • Point well made! These two have been playing strong for more years than I can remember.

  • This is Heaven.

  • This is so powerful... WELCOME TO HEAVEN !!!

  • It's interesting how the masters always know how to go with the flow: At some point at tyner's solo, the flow seems to be interrupted, but he never forces any notes into it. He just grooves with it, feels it and tries to find a different way. It's a constant navigational process. You get it, you sort of loose it, you get it again, you loose it again...

  • That Maj7 in Minor, YOU DIGGG!!! (@ 5:05)

    Brotherhood.

Outside is the only way in....

The only people missing from this band are Woody Shaw and Joe Henderson.

  • Damn, Joe Henderson would do wonders in this band.

  • BassThrasher, it's 6/8. Great groove and solos

  • Grooves so hard...I love it.

    Who's who in the back?

  • Wow, that lick from 3:40 to 3:50 is scary.

  • Excellent.

Does anyone know what is the time signature of this song? Is it 7/8 maybe?

  • It's 6/8. Sometimes, depending on where the accents fall, an even ostinato like this can suggest an uneven pattern, but it's a very regular 6/8.

  • Tyner woo such a living legand

  • Bobby is to vibes what Larry Young was to organ. Dig 'em!

  • Hutch is my main man. Always a pleasure and challenge to listen to. Great post.

  • I was fortunate to see McCoy Tyner, Charnett Moffett, & Eric Harland perform "The African Village" at Ravinia Festival (in the northern suburbs of Chicago)during the fall of 2005 and heard the best live jazz performance in my entire LIFE. Also had the chance to shake hands with McCoy & Charnett Moffett after they performed at Joe Segal's Jazz Showcase 2 months later. Two of the nicest brothas I've ever met.

  • baddest vibe player ever! love yah bobby!!

  • Bobby Hutcherson: GIANT om vibes.

  • Music of the higest creative level played by two masters, what more could you want ? OK OK, the new pc is on the way.!!! downzbeats cannot rate this one, we just bow in honor...

  • Two masters. Thanks for posting this.

  • Bobby Hutcherson is Rad

  • Nice full scales Bobby.---AmeenRaa - Improsessions

  • Powerful music! Bobby Hutcherson has not lost a step in over 40 years of recording. Tyner is a national treasure. Lovin' it!

  • B E A U T I F U L !!!

Mc Coy Tyner is the man who turned me on to Jazz when I was young...

  • I saw this video a few months ago. I can' t stop watching it since that time. It's perfect. I discovered it thanks to Madlib :)

  • I saw this same group about a year ago. Ravi Coltrane was there as well. Eric Harland and Charnett Moffett stole the show.
