Ok. So I found this version of Jingle Bells on some random Christmas cd I bought last year. I must say i have never heard anybody sing this song with so much soul. I listened to that song all year. It's incredible. That guy was right James Taylor does murder this song and nobody could do it better. James Taylor = Genius
thanks for posting !! ~ love, love, love this CD - play it at work, and play it in the frosty mornings to wake up with! SLY, GROOVY, and all around FUN ~ wish there were more Christmas videos of his with Arnold, Kate and David backing up ~ they are sooooooo sweeeet! ~ stay clear if you don't like your 'traditional' Christmas songs shaken & stirred! Glad tidings to all.............
@270Gmoney ~ lol. just saw a post by some unitiated fool saying he murders this song. what a hoot. Gotta groove, or Christmas wackiness will send me over the edge! JT & Co. always keep me sane (and smilin'!) .... love that MAN! ~~
A cool "take" on the song, although I much prefer the original. Actually, being a Taylor fan like so many, I find his Christmas stuff to be poor. I don't think his voice works or approach with these songs. Christmas songs require that very special voice and accompaniment that works, like the Burl Ives holiday stuff or Johnny Mathis's Sleigh ride. There's just nothing magical in Taylor's renditions and that's at the very heart of a holiday song. Those old, classic versions simply the best.
@Seaclam67 check out JT's "In the Bleak Midwinter" and "River" on his "At Christmast" CD (well suited to his 'sparse' folk style)+ arrngmt on 'Go Tell it On the Mountain' ~just beautiful ~ people pidgeon hole him, but if you've followed his work or seen him live over the past 4 decades, u can only wonder at his extraordinary ability to meld folk, jazz, funk r&r & blues~ I love traditional Christmas arrangements too, but when I need a jump start, THIS is the Christmas CD I can't live without!
I enjoy musicians taking a well known song and changing the arrangement but this is odd. "Oh, what fun?" Doesn't sound like fun. James is singing like Joe Cocker now. Is that Greg Allman backing up, too?
@InsaneComedy ~ WHY are you here?! insane, w/o the comedy, i fear ~ no .If you've ever witnessed JT and those crack musicians and SINGERS behind him, you'd understand the meaing of "you gotta lknow the rules before you can break 'em" ~ this whole team can take a song and groove it in a way that leaves you wondering when your goose bumps will ever go down ~ so you stick with Burl Ives and take it easy, ya hear? :)
I agree - I like this version a lot.\

he's singing like the original song. Why don't you read the history of the song?
yellowsquaw 1 year ago
He adds his own flavor to it as well as the other musicians. Killer version imo.
