  • This is a great video

  • some really good stuff here

  • great video thanks

  • "In this way, it is insured that the unavoidable leisure shall cause misery all round instead of being a universal source of happiness. Can anything more insane be imagined?" ---this is literally true now---instead of people loving the leisure time they have---it becomes a source of shame and suffering....people spend more time complaining about unemployment than actually working on their family ties or personal happiness---but it isnt their fault....they goddamn slave state makes it so

  • that voice pisses me off , sounds like stephen hawkins computer talking

  • This man has no idea of how economics work and his philosophy lacks interpretation of modern living.

  • Well, mom, according to Bertrand Russell, I shouldn't get a job.

Oh if I'd read this in high school...

  • I really like this philosopher, but I find his critique of Nietzsche to be unforgivable, to say the least.

  • @TheDavid2222 I agree, I love Russell but he got Nietzsche completely wrong.

  • @TheDensley7

Of what I've read of Nietzsche (beyond good and evil, the will to power, thus spoke zarathustra) I came to the same conclusion as Russell had, though I confess my own words were not as eloquently put.

  • Maybe insignificant but this sounds like a synthesized voice.

  • I watched this after spending 3 hours watching YT videos, to avoid the guilt of wasting a good part of the day. Now I'm ready for anothet couple hours. :-D

  • B-Russ rulz

  • I've watched this like 10 times now.

  • Praise idleness, praise hardwork, everything in its right place and time.

  • @father042 If you can have sex with 4 women at the same time and keep them all happy, you have to be fairly smart.

  • this guy is fasinating

  • heeey, pdf reading program robot voice! way to be lazy, indeed ;D

  • Doesn't matter how fascinating the content is....can't stand the sound....

  • yes yes yes. being a landlord is ownership of people, and therefore immoral. the tenant is beholden to the landlord for his survival.

if one lets a property to another, he should not expect 'rent', he should give it freely to the tenant!

let everyone be sovereign homeowners by right of humanity!

    down with mortgages therefore!

regarding savings, any money saved is money not spent saving another's life.

So, saving 'excess' money is immoral.

Of course, following such principles undermines money!

  • Bertrand Russell ... a torch light in the darkness of ignorance. I love him, always have. It is said that the giant is not a description of physical size, no, rather the giant is measured by his character and his courage to challenge blind authority ... the giant is as he does ... and ... man oh man ... Bertrand Russell was a giant ... but always a kind, gentle giant. Always.

  • With all due respect, I think the robot has a slightly better voice than Russell.

  • way to copy and paste into a text reader. i fucking hate writing a paper on this shit.-wish me luck

  • I think the robot voice is perfectly fitting for this speech. Russel is praising idleness. This is the least work that reading this essay could possibly take, for the listener and the maker.

  • @umhalil they could have gotten any human to narrate! robot voice is a little disrespectful,i think, and distracting from the point.

  • this would have been much better if read by a person, not robot. its really distracting:(

  • thank you so much....

  • @cloudburstlenepmhq Thanks for the link; very interesting.

  • this guy sounds like Jake McCrann. Google Jake McCrann. Exactly the same rhetoric. Fearless. Fear has abridged so many words. Some of them just say whatever pops into their heads. Some of them do it for all their lives, others get assassinated.

  • @KombiPode good contribution there budy

  • Not only was Russell one of the greatest intellectuals of all-time, he was the first righteously indignant 'slacker'.

I agree with him on all accounts.

  • Already a fan of the man. Thanks t0kt0k!

  • This computer voice is an insult to the memory of Bertrand Russell and an annoyance to everyone else.

  • @Zeon11111

The human being selected to read this dropped out after the first rehearsal.

    Couldn't be arsed with it.

  • See the video, "Our technical Reality"

  • Is this a chomsky audiobook!!!!!!!!!???? :D

  • I'm pretty sure my X-box told me this once, in exactly that same voice. It's very hard to follow a monotone voice in any intellectual persuit.

  • hypocrite! he worked his ass off.

  • Smart man!

  • nice guy, ha :) listen to this, the robot is even better :)

    watch?v=OJ57PQBAQ9s&feature=related

  • How utterly horrible - synthesized voice

  • WHY the Computer voice ????

    Why ? Why ???

  • Id prefer to hear you read this than that computer...but thanks for sharing!

  • There was MUCH starvation in the Soviet Union. Stalin systematically starved the Ukrainians. Millions. Bertrand Russel didn't know.

  • I honestly can't take the Microsoft Mike or whatever voice it is seriously =/

  • agreed. this is horribly annoying. get one of his books- his essays are a lot of fun to read.

  • I'm a great fan already :)

  • It's a great thing to hear from one of the most english of all englishmen this sort of aristocratic-hedonistic refutation of the current life-consuming obsession with action and entrepreneurship. This is what I call a free and unprejudiced view of human existence.

  • All that pipe smokin's got him sounding like a robot on helium!

What's he got in that bowl?!?!?!

  • The reader we hear on this recording is not

    Russell.

  • "When you are studying any mater or considering any philosophy, ask yourself ONLY what are the FACTS and what is the truth that the facts bear out.

Never let yourself be diverted aether by what you WISH to believe or by what you THINK could have beneficial social effects if it were believed, but look ONLY and SOLELY at what are the FACTS."

    B. Russell

  • he is the best the law of least effort!!!

  • right on. Let the brain take the strain

  • A very wise man. One of our greated philosophers.

  • I actually found it that way. I'm not sure what voice it is.

  • @t0kt0k is it a computer emulated voice ?

  • THIS VIDEO IS AWSOME! YA!

  • haha

  • I love Bertrand Russell, this was one of the first articles I ever read from him.

  • I loved this essay and 100% agree with it. My favorite philosopher. ;D

  • @AranyThiru can you believe, I'm just discovering all of his work from today because I'm going back to learning maths and its history?! What a treasure.
