It took me years before I realized that when the guy gives that speech in the scene, that he says Laurel & Hardy. So stupid, and so funny. I guess I'm stupid for not realizing it right away. Thanks for posting this scene. I love the music.
"We, the white, God fearing citizens of Rock Ridge wish to express our EXTREME displeasure with your choice of Sherriff. Please remove him immediately. The fact that you have sent him here just goes to prove that YOU are the leading ***hole in the state." Oh yes... "Now go do that Voodoo that YOu do so Welllllll!! CLASSIC lines from the ONLY Western I've ever liked!
I loved this movie when it came out but now it just plan sucks. You can't offend eny one now or say eny thing out of the way or your a racest. Sad times were living in.
The late Jack Starret played the old man on top of the roof spotting the late Cleavon Little. Starett eight years later would play the sadistic deputy sheriff shooting at Sylvester Stallone from a helicopter in First Blood.
People griping about the epithets REALLY need to look at the context.
Now look at all the people who fire off the word "Nigger". Usually bad guys and stupid people. It is NEVER in a context that puts the person saying it in a positive light. Even when Bart says it, it's pointing out how stupid it is for ignorant people to say it.
Damn. Mel himself ran the script past several black friends before he went with it. Some actually suggested MORE politically incorrect stuff to say.
The Republican party of Lincoln is gone. They are now the party of the old Confederacy. LBJ made sure of that when he passed the Civil Rights Act. Deal with it Republicans, that is who you are now.
@woolleybugger2 You're falling into this perpetuated left vs right two paryt bullshit that prevents us being united as a nation. LBJ was a politician, in a political party, with no moral high ground over anyone. Quite the contrary actually. Now, I don't mean to offend anyone who's reading this, but upon passing the civil rights act LBJ said “I’ll have those niggers voting Democratic for the next 200 years.” Stop being a fucking tool and wake up. Rome is burning.
@ethelkitty let's not forget the alcoholics. First time I saw this I fell out of my chair laughing so hard that I almost passed out...this was ten years ago... And I still do to this date
Mel Brookes was brilliant. He could expose the ignorance and fear at the core of racism and wrap it up in palatable humor that even the most simple minded bigots would find easy to digest...even if they didn't understand that they were the ones being skewered.
To those who think that racial jokes aren't as funny in 2011as they were in 1970, you must be in the number with the ignorant and overly sensitive. This is a comedy (meant for fun), not a serious thing. This pokes fun at how racist whites(and blacks) acted then and even now.Must people 2day are getting overly upset because they think something or someone is racist with no facts behind their anger.Don't get me wrong there is still racism out there, but not as much as in the past. Oh yeah I am black
To bad most people do not get the idea of this movie. This movie, (comically) shows that people can put their prejudices aside and for a common goal, come together as one. Richard Pryor was one of the writers and Cleavon Little was the main character, do you think they felt the movie was racist, or do you think they got it?
@LauraBeachnut Really? Because on CNN it was a stadium full of cheering diehards. Reminded me of footage from one of those Nazi rallies. Oh yeah, I just made that connection! Who wants some chocolate?
@LauraBeachnut Obama got a poor receprion because of his idealogy, not because of his race. The lefties like to try and convince everyone its racist not to blindly follow their Mesiah. They go out of ther way to label everyone just to cover up their own failures. For children it's name calling, for lefties it's labeling. Both are acts of a childish mind. I bet no one on the left will vote for Herman Cain, so does that make them racist?
My favorite part of this movie, isn't in this movie its in Robin head men in tights. "A black sheriff....? 'Hey it worked in blazing saddles' Oh yeah"
Someone saying Mel Brooks was a racist? That is SO silly. Brooks was exposing racism for the stupidity it was and always will be. He makes racism look retarded! How in heck could someone think that makes him racist is beyond me! smh
Has anyone noticed that no one in this movie goes without insult? It pokes fun of whites, blacks, germans, chinese, government officials, latin-americans, mentally handi-capped, the irish... We are a sad society if we can't laugh at ourselves. This is one of the greatest movies of all time.
I totally agree. Americans have been brainwashed by "Poliictal Correctness". We are a mixture of different cultures, religions, ethnicity, all of which have good and bad traits. Mel Brooks does an outstanding job of making fun of EVERYONE. If you can't make fun of yourself - you just don't get it.
@ethelkitty1 True that. It's bizarre beyond belief that this movie continues to hold an R rating for political incorrectness. Bleep all of you PC police...
I've always liked this film! "...a laurel and hardy handshake...". Just one of the gazillion superb lines in this film. I've watched it so many times, first time when I was about 15. I'm 39 now and still love it!

@Jugglingjake87 While it certainly wasn't a film trying to crusade against injustice, holding racism up to ridicule is an effective way to combat it. Mel Brooks did a fantastic job with it.
@kcmt01 yes but THOSE Republicans were NOTHING like todays, in fact, in the time period between Wilson and FDR there was a polar shift in the two partys... The Democratic party of the 1800's was a very right wing conservative group while the upstart Republicans were more progressive in their thoughts. There has been no more liberal act in this nation's history than Lincoln "liberating" an entire race of people. He is our greatest President, but its unlikely he'd be a Republican today.
@stewielips Dang that shore is neat how them racist wepublicans can just slide on over and switch sides like that. I wonder who coordinated the change between the party that supported labor unions and the party that doesn't? The always moral democrats have always been pro union ... so those wacist wepubwicans must have started liking unions when they sneakily switched sides. That's a good trick!
I wonder how they got the pro-union racist democrats to decide they liked free markets and disliked collectivist labor union policy all at the same time? Them Republicans shore is tricky!
@stewielips FDR continued the segregation of the Fed bureaucracy and extended it to the soldiers sacrificing their lives in WWII. That's a polar shift?
Lincoln may not have remained a Repub in today's scenario, but his detesting of big government, big taxes, the existence of a moocher class, and supressing of individualism asuredly precludes him from being a modern Democrat.
@kcmt01 Actually, it was Democrats. Republicans didn't exist till around Lincoln's election. Then the Republican agenda was freedom for all slaves and equality. However, that tuned a 180 for both parties come the 1900s O_O...History.
@Nicknyte Your agenda is clouding your perception of history. Wilson re-introduced segregation to the Fed Bureaucracy and FDR extended it to the military. Eisenhower sent troops to Little Rock to force integration of public schools.
Give the reference (including year) that the Repub party platform included full emancipation.
@Nicknyte The Republican Party was founded in 1854 but the roots of the Republican Party can be found in three pryor parties: The Free Soil Party (1848-54), the Know Nothing Party (1845-60) the Whig Party (1833-56). I am just curious, what "turned 180 for both parties in the 1900s"? Do you believe that the Republican party no longer stands for equality? If so what is the basis of your claim?
@MrStrictlyStock Hmm... Obama Kool Aid... I am thursty, where could I get some? Down at the "cona stow?!" Can I swap some food stamps for it? Does it go well with a hunk of goverment cheese? Will it be provided with the eventual single payer health care that will be forced upon us in time?
@MrStrictlyStock Ah fuck that... I am still trying to unload all those Slick Willie Presidential Cigars I got 15 years ago! No takers... I still got Al Gore's Army rifle... never been fired and only dropped once: still can't give it away. All my John Kerry war medals, if ya got it pinned on your shirt nobody can see the made in China logos on the back yet still nobody wants them?! But most of all I don't know why nobody wants my Jimmy Carter Mr. Peanut head collectable?!
@BradNC11175 Al Gores rifle? John Kerrys medals? Remind me again what Bush was up to when they were in Vietnam? Doing an impression of a hoover with a 20 up his nose, back home in the National Draft Dodgers is what.
@OktoberSunset Just because I detest Kerry, Obama, Gore & Clinton doesn't mean I am a fan of Bush. That war mongering piece of shit traitor pissed on the United States Constitution every chance he got. He ran in 2000 as a so called "Reagan Conservative" and governed like a progressive big government piece of shit. He led us into nation building that benefited nobody but the Military Industrial Complex and his entire administration should be investigated for war crimes and if found guilty hung!!!
@BradNC11175 Please go and learn what progressive means. Clue: progressives don't give tax cuts the the rich, and block scientific research based on thier religious views. Also, Reagan was an idiot just like Bush and as far as war crimes go, is right up there too. He is the one who funded the mujahideen and supplied weapons to Iraq and Iran,
@OktoberSunset Texas Dumbocrat Senator Charlie Wilson had nothing to do with the Mujahideen? Do your homework! George W. Bush did as much as any president before or since to "progress" this country away from Constitutional principals via the Patriot Act & Homeland Security. Bush also did "progress" us towards One World Government by selling national soviergnty down the river as good as any. Show me where Obama has made any significant efforts divert from the course Bush set us on if you can?
@BradNC11175@BradNC11175 It stands for one thing, Make your own way through life. Lower government, less taxes, and flat taxes for all. Equality. I just wish there was more of an ethics agenda, but, whatever, parties suck anyway. I aint got faith in the Tea Party either, but not voting is worse than death. Thanks Brad for not being an asshat. You get a song. /watch?v=a5K62bt6Sw4
@Nicknyte A lot of folks have gotten the mind set that the voting is rigged and the votes do not count. After the 1992 presidential election this was my mind set for a long time as well. But, I actually do think things can be turned around in this country and in recent years I have had a different mind set on voting. In a nation "of the People, by the People and for the People..." the People have done a lousy job in the last several decades. I'd say an ignorant voter is worse than a non voter.
i like black people and like making fun of them. If we are still gonna live in the slave era, then we will make no forward progress. No one race earns the right to own one word ni**er. Grow up Blacky.

@Jugglingjake87 While it certainly wasn't a film trying to crusade against injustice, holding racism up to ridicule is an effective way to combat it. Mel Brooks did a fantastic job with it.

For those of you who don't know, Mel Brooks is making fun of racists in this movie. Get over it. Republicans won in 1865. Whether you like it or not.
kcmt01 1 year ago 67
@kcmt01 yes but THOSE Republicans were NOTHING like todays, in fact, in the time period between Wilson and FDR there was a polar shift in the two partys... The Democratic party of the 1800's was a very right wing conservative group while the upstart Republicans were more progressive in their thoughts. There has been no more liberal act in this nation's history than Lincoln "liberating" an entire race of people. He is our greatest President, but its unlikely he'd be a Republican today.
stewielips 1 year ago
@stewielips Dang that shore is neat how them racist wepublicans can just slide on over and switch sides like that. I wonder who coordinated the change between the party that supported labor unions and the party that doesn't? The always moral democrats have always been pro union ... so those wacist wepubwicans must have started liking unions when they sneakily switched sides. That's a good trick!
default013 1 year ago
I wonder how they got the pro-union racist democrats to decide they liked free markets and disliked collectivist labor union policy all at the same time? Them Republicans shore is tricky!
default013 1 year ago
@stewielips FDR continued the segregation of the Fed bureaucracy and extended it to the soldiers sacrificing their lives in WWII. That's a polar shift?
Lincoln may not have remained a Repub in today's scenario, but his detesting of big government, big taxes, the existence of a moocher class, and supressing of individualism asuredly precludes him from being a modern Democrat.
MrStrictlyStock 1 year ago
@kcmt01 Actually, it was Democrats. Republicans didn't exist till around Lincoln's election. Then the Republican agenda was freedom for all slaves and equality. However, that tuned a 180 for both parties come the 1900s O_O...History.
Nicknyte 1 year ago
@Nicknyte Your agenda is clouding your perception of history. Wilson re-introduced segregation to the Fed Bureaucracy and FDR extended it to the military. Eisenhower sent troops to Little Rock to force integration of public schools.
Give the reference (including year) that the Repub party platform included full emancipation.

You have a very confused agenda. Too much Obama Kool Aid.

@MrStrictlyStock Not really. If I had the proof, then It wouldn't be trolling. Keep feeding me brother. Goes down good with my Obama Kool-Aid.
WTF Agenda? Trolling is my Agenda.
Nicknyte 1 year ago
@Nicknyte The Republican Party was founded in 1854 but the roots of the Republican Party can be found in three pryor parties: The Free Soil Party (1848-54), the Know Nothing Party (1845-60) the Whig Party (1833-56). I am just curious, what "turned 180 for both parties in the 1900s"? Do you believe that the Republican party no longer stands for equality? If so what is the basis of your claim?
BradNC11175 1 year ago
@BradNC11175 The basis for his claim is that he drank the Obama Kool Aid.
MrStrictlyStock 1 year ago
@MrStrictlyStock Hmm... Obama Kool Aid... I am thursty, where could I get some? Down at the "cona stow?!" Can I swap some food stamps for it? Does it go well with a hunk of goverment cheese? Will it be provided with the eventual single payer health care that will be forced upon us in time?
BradNC11175 1 year ago
@BradNC11175 Forget the corner store - unless it's an ACORN office also.
You need to go to your local Democrat party meetings for indoctrination. The Kool Aid is served during the whole harangue.
All you can drink, and you can even get some to go for unsuspecting friends and relatives.

BradNC11175 1 year ago
@BradNC11175 I want it :3 Can I have it for $0.05?

@Nicknyte Sorry dude, all items are priced at $3.00 a pop: Slick Willie $3.00 bills only lol.
BradNC11175 1 year ago
@BradNC11175 Al Gores rifle? John Kerrys medals? Remind me again what Bush was up to when they were in Vietnam? Doing an impression of a hoover with a 20 up his nose, back home in the National Draft Dodgers is what.
OktoberSunset 1 year ago
@OktoberSunset Just because I detest Kerry, Obama, Gore & Clinton doesn't mean I am a fan of Bush. That war mongering piece of shit traitor pissed on the United States Constitution every chance he got. He ran in 2000 as a so called "Reagan Conservative" and governed like a progressive big government piece of shit. He led us into nation building that benefited nobody but the Military Industrial Complex and his entire administration should be investigated for war crimes and if found guilty hung!!!
BradNC11175 1 year ago
@BradNC11175 Please go and learn what progressive means. Clue: progressives don't give tax cuts the the rich, and block scientific research based on thier religious views. Also, Reagan was an idiot just like Bush and as far as war crimes go, is right up there too. He is the one who funded the mujahideen and supplied weapons to Iraq and Iran,
OktoberSunset 1 year ago
@OktoberSunset Texas Dumbocrat Senator Charlie Wilson had nothing to do with the Mujahideen? Do your homework! George W. Bush did as much as any president before or since to "progress" this country away from Constitutional principals via the Patriot Act & Homeland Security. Bush also did "progress" us towards One World Government by selling national soviergnty down the river as good as any. Show me where Obama has made any significant efforts divert from the course Bush set us on if you can?

@MrStrictlyStock This Kool-Aid is pretty good. Taste like trolling old guys and OH MY GOD THIS IS SERIOUS BUSINESS politicians. Go Brewer 2010.

@BradNC11175 @BradNC11175 It stands for one thing, Make your own way through life.
Nicknyte 1 year ago
@Nicknyte A lot of folks have gotten the mind set that the voting is rigged and the votes do not count. After the 1992 presidential election this was my mind set for a long time as well. But, I actually do think things can be turned around in this country and in recent years I have had a different mind set on voting. In a nation "of the People, by the People and for the People..." the People have done a lousy job in the last several decades. I'd say an ignorant voter is worse than a non voter.
