I've been building motorized bicycles for some time. My latest proto is a custom 49cc 4-stroke gas engine w/1-5 ratio transmission.

I am working on a "variable transmission" to give the machine better take offs and higher speeds.

Outlawing among states for these machines is becoming an aggravation.

You have a point; anyone who can afford to strap a jet engine to their bike can afford any bike. However, there are some good reasons to do it on an older one.

1. Less replacement cost if project fails catastrophically.

2.Older, heavier steel frames are often stronger and more stable than cheap modern versions.

3. $100 wal mart bikes are crap, and they often have structural issues just being ridden, by pedal.

4. The stark contrast of ancient crappy bike and jet is artistic

Do we stay with the Sturmey-Archer Three speed gears or lock the rear axle???, Do you favour leather sprung saddles or a racey knifepoint design?? And what about brakes? leather blocks or rubber?? Also the tech dept want to know if leaving the stabliser wheels on will affect areo dynamics.....!!! Comments appreciated. :)

I'd say rebuild both wheels with aluminium alloy rims, 36-spoke wheels. You can get a Sturmey-Archer 5-speed hub that will fit into the frame without modification.
