i think its hilarious and awesome. Its not like its alive. The town (Tallapoosa,Ga) used to be called "Possum Snout" so I guess their annual "Possum Drop" to ring in the new year is an ode to that history.
This is it's both cruel and illegal. A terrifying and disorienting experience for animal! During the "drop," the frightened animal will be subjected to a screaming crowd, fireworks, and the firing of muskets, which can damage her sensitive hearing and respiratory system. It's no wonder that eyewitnesses have reported that opossums used in previous years were shaking in fear.
@rawl6300 As someone who is often polarized by Southern customs and traditions, I thought the Opossum drop was absolutely crazy. Then I learned that the Opossum wasn't real, and it's really just the same premise as the Peach drop. Of course, the idea of an 'Opossum Drop' was ingloriously Southern, and it really personifies the mentality of this community.
@rawl6300 How is it sick and cruel? the possum was flattened by a car, the animal's fur was salvaged and stuffed by a taxidermist, they didn't do that to a live possum...who would even try?
disgusting

@12ealDeal the possum was real at one time, it was previously roadkill and a taxidermist took the fur and stuffed it for this occasion...
