I love how everyone's still squabbling over Miller's and Gutsu's scores almost 20 years after the event!! I can't imagine that Shannon Miller sits in front of You Tube these days, analysing every wobble and deduction taken/not taken!
COME ON people. Can't we appreciate BOTH gutsu and miller? Don't complain about miller, especially on miller's page. If you like, go to the video of gutsu's beam and admire her there.

2 obviously balance breaks and still a 9.925!?! Hello arent those supposed to be deductions. The most overscored gymnast of these Games hands down. So much hype over 5 medals when she probably deserved only 2 or 3 of those at most.
@theobosking stfu ok Yes they should of been a little bit more deductions but she had more difficult jumps then gutsu, gustu had 3 balance checks shannon had 2, flawless execution, and had more combination passes which add up your score higer, plus she stuck her dismount. And serioulsey do you want to hear overscored? Check out gustu's floor routine in this competition a gigantic step foward that could of easily been 2 tenths and SHE got a 9.925 so i don't want to hear shit about shannon
it seems there was more creativity in the sport back then. these days everyone's routines looks so similar - crammed full of tumbling passes with some small bits of robotic looking dance in between. but where is the grace and style???
wow, GREAT dismount!! she's the first gymnast I ever saw do a full twisting double back on the floor ex and I remember being floored that she went over and did it on beam too.
I'm not going to compare Miller and Gutsu because at this point I don't care but I've got to say even with the two tiny wobbles this is one of the best beam routines in terms of difficulty, execution, and artistry I've ever seen.
I would say Gutsu's routine is a bit harder (a standing full back, full twisting korbut flip, three backhand springs to double back with full twist dismount), but they are both beautiful routines.
00:35-00:39...incredible dynamics...amazing she never put on beam shoes to soften her landing...her feet really got some punishment here and she must've had footpain...today's gymnasts have it easier, padding on beam is much softer.
i have always loved shannon i just discovered her this year acaually and she is tottaly inspired me, i was already a good gymnast before but sadly i quit and shannon miller made me go back and now i am doing better then ever I JUST COMPLETED MY BACK LAYOUT ON THE BEAM i love shannon so much, i too thought there was nothing wrong with her nose i persoanally like her old one better, but as long as shannons happy i am happy I AM HER NUMBER ONEE FAN
Well, I'll say this. Tatiana Gutsu's did have the daring element. But as far as watching routine's that are pleasing to the eye, that were executed BEAUTIFULLY, Miller wins. I will take lovely form and grace over tricks. I know people like gymnastics for various reasons, and I appreciate the girls that look like dancers. Like Korbut and our generation's Liukin. Miller falls into that grade, for me.
yes you are so right, i remember Miller so well, very lovely and graceful, i am not a gymnast but i was a dancer and i really appreciate that part of it, sadly todays gymnasts are too rigid and not elegant, it is not their fault i fear i guess that is what they are taught, hopefully we will go back to the days of the elegant girls from the 70,s,Liukin was thankfully a pleasure to watch at the Olympics recently,
yeah she did. and i'm saying this in a negative way! i can understand people getting their nose done when it's really hideous or something, but she was sooooo pretty!! why, shannon, why??
I'm going off what I hear, but I believe they are same as the 2008 olympics, Tim Dagget and Elfi Schlegel. 95% sure of it. Same non-olympics announcer as well, Al Trautwig.
Some of you fail to realize that Gutsu shouldn't even have been in the all-around final ... Miller won the meet, hands down. She did 16 routines without a major error.
There were some mandatory deductions here the judges neglected to take. Each of those significant wobbles should have been .1 each. If those were taken she would have had a 9.725 instead of a 9.925. Not right.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Actually, if the judges had taken the correct deductions, they would have taken .1 for the bobble after her first sequence, and .05 after her three layouts. The rest of the routine is absolutely perfect! The absolute lowest that this routine should have scored is a 9.85. Miller was so superior in form and execution that I feel her 9.925 was well deserved.
You are admitting she deserved 0.15 in deduction s which means the maximum she could score would be a 9.85 even if the routine were a 10 otherwise and then say the 9.925 was deserved anyway. What a crock. Sorry her routine could not initialy have been out of a 10.075.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
You have to remember that the most important part of scoring a routine is to differentiate the gymnasts and establish the best performers. Shannon's combination of difficulty and excellent execution made her the top athlete on the balance beam. Her 9.925 was the hightest score on the beam in the AA. Despite her two minor mistakes, she still deserved the highest score. That is what I meant.
Yes that is all true, but there are required deductions for obvious mistakes. You are even admitting her two mistakes combined are 0.15 of required deductions. So even if you feel the routine deserved a 10 without mistakes, the highest she should score still should be a 9.850.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
There was, of course, no bonus points awarded for sticking a landing at the 1992 Olympics. But I'm sure that her extremely solid full in left the judges with a wonderful taste in their mouths!
Then you would have to apply these deductions across the board, which leaves Gutsu with about a 9.725 after her floor routine. And so on and so forth with this code that did not apply deductions.
9.7 is too low - this olympics was fully inflated. I doubt the first wobble for her Back Layout is worth a .1 ded. cause she stuck it and didn't move her FEET, but I am glad Gutsu won anyways :)
@serenakicksass lets see shall we?... Gustu, three balance checks, mount, full, and dismount, miller 2 pike back and layouts and a stuck dismount. and miller had more combination passes and better jumps. Plus if you want to hear bad judging chekc out gutus's floor routine that double layout should of been a 2 tenths deduction, but she got a 9.925 serioulsey
@applepie708 are you kidding me? oh great an obsessed gustu fan once again.. i don't want anyone complaining about shannon's score! if you haven't noticed, but those were minor balance breaks. and did everyone ever see gutsu's floor routine that hugeee step foward which could have eaisly been 2 tenths, and they gave HER a 9.925 and shannon's bobbels weren't that big, plus she had harder jumps then gutsu and better form, and stuck her dismount, which gustu did not
@applepie708 Well you also have to see that Gutsu had three mandatory deductions the judges neglected to take as well, which was actually one more then Shannon. So i guess both were over scored, but people shouldn't complain just on Shannon's page
I actually agreed with the scoring in the AA until vault. Bars was 9.95 Gutsu, 9.925 Miller; beam 9.912 Gutsu, 9.925 Miller; floor 9.925 Gutsu, 9.900 Miller. The problem I had was vault. Miller had to make up over 0.25 to win but I think she did. Her vault should have been a 10. Even if not, Gutsu really did not do her best vault at all and should not have even been 9.95. She just got nervous and
didnt do the vault she needed to hand on and win but the judges gave it anyway.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
You really think that major step forward in Gutsu's routine wasn't at LEAST a tenth? In that code a 9.9 would have been fair. She almost look like she was going to fall.
Shannon had a huge step back on her second tumbling run, so don;t forget to deduct that. Plus Tatiana was attempting a skill that was extremely difficut and no one did it before or after her, and the judges realized that. While Shannon was doing pretty much the same stuff as eveyone else.
She did so much better that year (1992) than the next year (1993)!!! I love that dismount...and all her tumbling passes...please come watch my videos!!
Way overscored for this routine. It was a joke she got a higher score then Gutsu. Gutsu had way more difficulty and amplitude on everything. Miller had 2 big balance breaks, bigger then the 2 tiny mistakes Gutsu had. If Gutsu was a 9.912 this should be a 9.812, or if this deserved a 9.925 Gutsu should be atleast a 9.975. Her bogus high score here allowed her to beat Milosovici and Bontas who would have bumped her off the AA podium otherwise.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
You couldn't be more wrong!!! Unlike Gutsu, Milosovici, and Bontas, Shannon Miller had something special... difficulty AND great execution. Tatiana Gutsu had, let's be honest, terrible form!! Shannon's balance checks here were very minor, and once again, she absolutely stuck her full in dismount. She absolutely deserved a higher score here than Gutsu!
As was Shannon Miller's! The difference is that Miller, despite her two slight wobbles, had far better execution, and a great landing on her dismount.
Was Tatiana innovative or does the choreography come from a higher up--a coach/trainer? It just seems to me, with the lack of style (though paired with a formidable 'substance', in her ability to pull off extremely difficult moves), it would be an outsider who put together her routines. I just don't see any joy in Tatiana's face when she is performing. I feel bad for her, almost. It seems like she's being puppeted across the beam and putting her life on the line, all for a gold medal.
Most Soviet gymnasts didn't look happy! Look at Strazheva, Boginskaya, Yurchenko, etc.! It's natural for the Soviets, only a few smiled in their routines (Korbut, Filatova, Omelianchik, etc.) Also, Tatiana's strength was difficulty, not artistry. I usually prefer artistic gymnasts over daredevils, but there's something about Tatiana's gymnastics that I like.
No where near as difficult? Miller did 3 layouts, Gutsu 2. Gutsu had a full which is mega-hard. Shannon did a back pike sequence as well. Shannon also did a back dive to handstand. Gutsu had a Rulfova. Both did full-in dismounts. I would say Miller had about 90 percent of the difficulty that Gutsu did, but both still had WAY MORE than what was required of them.
DON'T EVER compare Shannon and Tatiana in terms of difficulty, you'll never win that debate backing Shannon. Tatiana's dismount on bars had more amplitude and takes more strength to pull of thus giving her more difficulty. Tatiana did a split-leg double layout, that is extremely hard. She also had to whips into a double back, that's really hard. She did do a full-in dismount but off of 3 backhandsprings which means you need to be able to stay from getting tired fast, that makes it more difficult
@wexlerchick shannon had 2 balacne cheks on beam, and a stuck dismount. Gustu had three on beam. bars gustu landed deep on her double layout and had bad exection vault do i really need to explain this? obviousley it was miller she landed straight up with a stuck landing and amazing execution, gustu hoped, second one she landed deep, floor gustu should of got 2 tenths off for that step
does anyone who who the other gymnast was that competiing the full twisting double back in the 1992 olympics except for Tatiana Gutsu cause i looked at all of them and couldnt find the person...
hmmm i checked Dawes optional routine and it still remains 2 back handsprings to a double tuck but thanks for the time (note dawes did 2 back handsprings to a full in double in the 1996 olympics)
I realized that after I posted that comment too. What is interesting is Dawes did a full in at the Nationals in 1992 but not at the Olympics. What is that about?
The three athletes who performed full-ins off the beam in Barcelona were Shannon Miller, Tatiana Gutsu, and Mari Kosuge of Japan. (Mari did her's piked). Shannon's full-in here was the best of them all!!
This is why she did not get the gold

I believe it was Dominique Dawes.

hmmm i checked Dawes optional routine and it still remains 2 back handsprings to a double tuck but thanks for the time (note dawes did 2 back handsprings to a full in double in the 1996 olympics)

I realized that after I posted that comment too. What is interesting is Dawes did a full in at the Nationals in 1992 but not at the Olympics. What is that about?

she was injured

She was not consistent at it and she was never a lock to make that team. She needed consistency over big skills she fell on 75% of the time.

The three athletes who performed full-ins off the beam in Barcelona were Shannon Miller, Tatiana Gutsu, and Mari Kosuge of Japan. (Mari did her's piked). Shannon's full-in here was the best of them all!!

lol that routine would have gotten barely a 9.5 with today's standards

and what would your routines get?

imagine both miller and gutsu were just 15, the pressure of cameras and a huge crowd ontop of competing those skills...unbelievable....
