@johnnyrckt At that point the Soviet Bloc was all of Eastern Europe, and even Germany. You're trying to say militant Islam is less of a threat than theUSSR (which was by that time a shadow of it's former self).

France, Italy, and the UK are on the other side (geographically speaking). Some say US involvement in Afghanistan was more due to Iran kicking out the US than anything else; the Soviet threat didn't actually exist. The US had already defused the Cuban Missile crisis by that time.

@johnnyrckt But using that same line of reason, the US losing strategic Army bases in Iran would be losing ground to the Russians. Though Russians had a different government, the Cuban Missile Crisis showed they would not likely risk a nuclear war. The Soviets having a large amount of nuclear weapons does not in itself make them dangerous, or opponents of the US could justifiably claim the US is the most dangerous and needs to be stopped.

The US govt. was short-sighted regarding Afghanistan.

I have personally been to WINSEC and seen some of their training activities. I would not never go as far as call it a terrorist training camp; neverhtheless, they do teach things such as guerrilla warfare, "advanced" interrogation techniques, and some pretty rough counter-insurgency methods. There were also other things that I was not allowed to witness but heard rumors of ... lets just say there is something they don't want you to know when it comes to the curriculum at WINSEC. ;)
