Oh my goodness! D: What happened to her to cause the hole?? Thats horrific looking. I think it is wonderful that they rescued her and took the time, money, and effort to give her a good life instead of just putting her down or sending her to slaughter!
such a good girl she was for you guys. the foal was just adorable. looks just like one of the horses i used to have. glad they are with a wonderful loving home.
A Happy Ending: Just found out today that Pearl is being adopted tonight by a family near Camrose! After consulting with plastic surgeons and veterinarians, they decided not to do another operation. She still has a hole in her head, but it's healed and no longer infected.
Basically, while staff changed her bandages, the horse snorted and undid the surgery. Vets think that because she had a foal, her immune response was lowered.
@modelhorsecollector1 I don't know how it happened. Just went out there today to see the horse. Unfortunately the surgery didn't work -- I'll post a link to the story when it comes out this week.
@bmwittmeier So was the surgery repeated? since you notice that the surgery was undone by the snorting? Do you also know how they replaced the skull part that's missing? Or did they just cover it up with skin?
@OgreWorld Surgery wasn't repeated. Apparently the hole is smaller now, and the infection cleared up. They consulted with plastic surgeons, who said it was 50-50 on whether follow up surgery would be effective.
@evilchicka Susan Fyfe, the head of Rescue 100 Horses foundation, wouldn't say what the cause was (she didn't know, wouldn't speculate).
Pearl was brought in with several other malnourished horses. It's possible she was hit in the nose with a shovel or something, not sure. I might do a follow-up piece with the Edmonton Journal. I'll post an update if that's the case.

How is she doing.I hope she is ok?
KimberleyBubble 1 year ago
@KimberleyBubble From what I'm reading here I think the horse died.
OgreWorld 1 year ago
@OgreWorld aww, poor little thing, I hope she didn't, she seems so sweet natured,
KimberleyBubble 1 year ago
@OgreWorld No, she was alive and well when I went and saw her in January.
bmwittmeier 8 months ago
@OgreWorld No, the horse didn't die. At least last I checked (in January), the foal had been weaned and she was perfectly healthy.
