Grow up, realize what's happening around you... the world is ending! Global warming is effecting everything! You need to start and try to stop this effect! Not cheer about it!
@Shirley20Kwan It happens erevy couples of years. The Glacier (Perito Moreno) expands over the "Argentine Lake" (Lago argentino) and then it collapses. And the cicle starts again.
Calving has always been going on. But almost all the world's glaciers are melting/retreating now, it's like 98 or 99 percent of them. In Antarctica, Greenland, the Alps, the Andes, all over the planet.
Really bugs me that people talk about stuff they know nothing about. To you its only speculation. You all are not scientist and do know go out into the world and study all of this, so why argue about something that you know nothing about, only read about?
It would be interesting to measure how far the ice projectiles were able to travel. Because it sure as hell looks like it was farther than the crowd-line in the picture. Anyone able to inform me?
i only have my own observations to rely on in regards to global warming, and point in fact , where i live here on the atlantic coast of nova scotia there has been no change.. let me say that again there has been no change.... i live about 10 feet above sea level have lived here in the area all my life and things are still the same as they have allways been . the water level is the same the temperatures are the same..there actually is no evidence of so called global warming here..
@richardtheone okay. i just went to the canadian weather website and looked up climate variations. For the 63 years until 2010, Canada all of Canada has experienced an increase in temperature of 1.6 degrees C. Yes, the area known as Atlantic Canada has not experienced temperature change as high but ut has gone up by 0.5 degrees in the same time. There are places in canada like the Mackenzie district that has experienced an increase of 2.6 degrees C. cont....
@richardtheone cont...just because you personally haven't observed "evidence" of climate change in your tiny part of the world doesn't mean it isn't happening. Mind you, i am currently reading a lot of published papers on the effect of increased ocean temperatures around Nova Scotia resulting from global warming and its effect on the biodiversity in your little part of the world. Very interesting stuff. I may end up knowing more about your place than you do.
@uknowispeaksense okay what you know is what you have from research.. i have done research as well and what i find out is that all iknow is what someone else says.. real time on the gound here at home things have not changed any in the last 40 years.. i can show you pictures from the 1880's of lake banook in dartmouth with no ice in january...maybe cycles who nows for sure .. i'm not denying climate change is happening i'm just saying i don't see it here.. as for global warming caused by man...
@uknowispeaksense whose evidence? the evidence i just presented to you does not in fact bear this out.. do you have any personal experince that global warming is in fact happening or that man has created this situation...just playing devils advocate here with you...
@richardtheone what you presented is anecdotal evidence. the overwhelming consensus in the scientific community is that AGW is a fact. there are more peer reviewed scientific papers demonstrating it than you can poke a stick at. I am not going to start listing them here tonight as its 2am where I am and I'm going to bed. I am more than happy to send you references but if yougo to sciencedirect or ebscohost you can search the scientific literature yourself.
@jacques19999 So no glacier should ever collapse at its end? As the giant body of ice sinks into warmer climates, it should just stay frozen forever creeping further and further into unfrozen lands? Till eventually the whole planet is frozen? :|
@morroida9966 glaciers dont melt only when we have global warming, dont be fooled by the media (but i do know global warming is being sped up by human activity). this happens every year in spring, so they will not be surprised to see it happening, just impressed by the events.
@morroida9966-It has nothing to do with global warming/climate change. It's a naturally occurring feature where glaciers calve and then rebuild themselves. Read nacexc's comment below.
weeeeeeeee lets all go watch ice drop into the sea. well document and record all you want because in another 20yrs time theres going to be a hell of alot less ice around! this change is permanent and not just overnight! thousands of years for ice to be created into icebergs and cover the poles and only hundreds to remove it all..
As of mine, starting from the 1709s Global Warming has occured!
During the last 100 years, sea-level has rasied 15 meters and tempature heating by 3.93 degrees above normal! ITS THE END OF THE WORLD!!!!! Why do people are happy?
relax, that glacier has been melting for 10,000 years. It's almost done, finally, in a few thousand more years some trees can grow there. some cute furry animals can live in the trees too. win/ win.
This video is like from late 80's... Global warming was not the issue that age, and guys GW will not just happen in these few years, it cant.. its a slow prosess, even if it gets disturbed by human... It is still slow prosess. BUT! how ever we still need to make pure energy just for sake of ourselves......
more and more people get astma, cancer, diapetes etc. WE need to not just change some things, WE need to change all things. Our habits, way of life and so on... We need to change as persons, not by acts, because our acts will work as so far.. thats human way.. but if we change our thinking method we change everything...
1. glaciers always melt at the end (and may do so by collapses), the question is whether it melts faster than it grows and most of the glaciers are doing that now.
2. global warming doesn't mean that there will be no cold winters anymore: it's a trend, but year-by-year variations are really large, you only see the trend if you look at multiple years
3. the fact that global warming occurred before, doesn't mean, that it's nog manmade this time.
What do you mean by warming up, i live in Holland and we have now a winter like never before, much much snow and temperatures below minus ten are every day, it seems normal for us now, finnally a long cold winter.
I think this is funny... so many people are like OMG!!! the world is coming to an end!!!! GLOBAL WARMING!!! EMISSIONS!!! i dont disagree with the fact that we are destroying the atmosphere. Were vehicles and technology around to warm the world to melt the Bering Strait 19,000 years ago? no... so technically the earth has been warming since then. EAT IT!! its nature taking its course. it will warm up all the way eventually, and the poles will melt.
This case is an exemption, the perito moreno ( in argentina ) is the only glacier who is still growing. Every 10 years ( not sure ) it creates an ice brigde and blocks the river ( which separates two huges lacs ) and with the force of the water on both sides, it collapse . And it starts all over again. But it is an expetion in the world I agree with you, stil it is amazing, I which it had collapsed when I went there, but the Ice Bridge was'nt to big .
@TheKingdomofErnor - well its a hell of a lot smaller now thats for sure. Its very distressing to see this happening - not like we can just stick it back on with some sticky tape . Its like you want to grab it and stop if from falling, because you know that what your seeing is really the result of our bad management of the planet , and our own undoing if we are not smart and get to grips with whats happening. - I am ranting a little i know, but this is a subject that i feel strongly about.
@samsagitarias: No, there's nothing wrong about this - it is natural and normal. Glaciers flow down hill, and they calve. That is part of their life cycle. If they didn't, then pretty soon he entire earth would be an iceball. Glaciers do that in the summer even if glacier's weren't retreating. You can see that at some point in the recent past that glacier dammed the river, and where the water eventually broke through.
@puncheex Yes, I understand that, but its happening more and waaaaaay faster than it should - the glaciers are reducing far far far faster than is normal - without them things will get rather dodgy to say the least - still as sad a sight as it is, it has to be said that it is an amazing and terrifying sight to see
OK, I can agree. However, melting glaciers are a symptom of the deeper problem. They themselves are doomed to recycle just like everything else eventually; in a given day you are seeing the same thing whether we had global warming or not; this could as well be happening a century ago as today.
@puncheex Its interesting, when you think of that senario - thing is, we are supposed to be in or heading to a long over due ice age, where these things are formed - think thats what i learned in Geography at school was a long time ago, but if things are not as they should be, and this cycle of ice age and then coming out of it is disrupted, what, will the consequeces be. I do understand that some of what is happening is supposed to be, but not so much and not at this speed as earth cant keep up
Antarctic Glacier Thinning At Alarming Rate ScienceDaily (Aug. 15, 2009) — The thinning of a gigantic glacier in Antarctica is accelerating, scientists report. The Pine Island Glacier in West Antarctica, which is around twice the size of Scotland, is losing ice four times as fast as it was a decade years ago.
I don't understand why people who are commenting are so sad and angry about people celebrating. Think about it for a second, the glaciers were not always here, they formed during the ice age. Now, as the earth slowly warms back up and returns to it's normal state, the remains of the ice are melting off and things are returning to normal.
i agree... it's an amazing spectacular event.. it's so cool to see on a video, imagine having been there?... I also can't stand people who have to belittle others because of how they word something, or if they think they're smarter... they must be jealous because they weren't there to see it!!
Well, if you read it carefully you may see that it states GLOBAL warming, not "warming especially in western canada". This "global warming" is many kinds of things all around the world and not only warming in Canada. Floods, droughts, storms etc.. One winter doesn't tell the whole truth. I do not know about Canada but here in scandinavia temperatures might drop quite a lot if the Gulf stream weakens due to the melting of glaciers of the North pole.
@Mustatuuli global wamring in a sence that was know maybe .2% of why its caused, more evidence of that .2% falls to the earth cycles thingy... makes sence, ice melts than it comes back better to be here when it melts or when it comes back?
StarJekker-a more correct term would be climate change. Where cold weather gets colder and hot weather even hotter. None of which have anything to do with this particular glacier, though.
I feel I need to contribute because wrong things are said here. This is Perito Moreno Glacier, Patagonia. It's a unique glacier for 2 reasons 1) It's the only one still advancing 2) It's famous for the rupture phenomenon (what you are seeing in the video). The glacier advances against a peninsula and creates a bridge. Because the lake on the right side is close, the water raises to a point where it breaks the ice and the bridge collapse. It occurs every 18-24 months.
@lmaestro Fail. From the Wiki: The glacier first ruptured in 1917, taking with it an ancient forest of arrayán (Luma apiculata) trees. The last rupture occurred in July 2008, and previously in 2006, 2004, 1988, 1984, 1980, 1977, 1975, 1972, 1970, 1966, 1963, 1960, 1956, 1953, 1952, 1947, 1940, 1934 and 1917. It ruptures, on average, about every four to five years.
You are just a know-nothing city-boy that never gets out and actually does anything....haul your ignorant behind up here to Alaska and we'll show you what real is, Bubba!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
That is so fuckin fake...you people actually can't see the edit??? What's pathetic is that a news station actually played it....man people are gullible
Are you that stupid?!?! These things DOOOO happen! If you would be so kind to point out the edits mister (oh i am an expert in identifying edits in a glacier video) Why don't you do the world a favor and melt in front of a TV. Leave this to people who actually appreciate it.
its amazing to see but i wouldnt be cheering. there was a mini icu age from the 17th the late 19th century, some climatologists are saying the climate is going to cool down over the next few years.
any1 help me on understanding why? cant seem to get my head around it!!
We're all going to die if the sealevel goes up? Don't be so dramatic there, partner. Earth's been warming and cooling for billions of years. Nothing new.
exactly. the earth has been warming and cooling for billions of years. and we obviously were not on the earth for billions of years. but today, we are experiencing large amounts of glacier decrease, which would have effect on our oceans and leave sea levels rising.
We're going to Patagonia in 2009. If this is what we have in store for us I can hardly wait! Great video. Happen to be at the right place at the right time.
"WASHINGTON -- Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne announced Wednesday that the agency will list the polar bear as threatened under the Endangered Species Act, a decision that could cast the bears as the enduring symbol of the effects of global warming."
THANK YOU Secretary Kempthorne !!
And thank you Al Gore, Greenpeace, Arnold, National Geographic, the EU... etc. you made a difference.
Saludos
Like I said before this particular glaciar is not receeding, but in the same park there are other glaciars receeding. This glaciar is 230 feet tall, and the people you see in the video are on the top of a hill. People used to watch this show at lake level, but some died because of the small ice pieces thrown away with speed from the collapse. I hope I answer all your doubts.
In this video you cannot apreciate the side of the front wall of the glaciar which is around 230 feet tall. The people you see in the video are on the top of a hill. People used to watched this show at lake level before, but some people died cause of the small ice that flown away like bullets during collapsation. I Hope I answer all your doubts.
This event doesn't have nothing to do with global warming. This event used to happend every 4 years, but in 1982 it was the last time it happend until last year when it started again, and this year also, these are images from this year's collapsation.
This is the Perito Moreno Glacias, in Calafte, Argentina. Its one of the only active glaciars in the world. This means that the glaciar collapses and it build's it self back again. This glaciar its between to lakes that connect to each other. When the glaciar blocks the connection between the two lakes, the water in one lake rises. Then the water pressure causes the collapsation of the glaciar.
Nice Enya song for this video! A lot of vids don't have good tunes.

I also can't stand people who have to belittle others because of how they word something, or if they think they're smarter... they must be jealous because they weren't there to see it!!

global warming????? HAHAHAHAHAHA... we've had more snow and colder temperatures here (western canada) this year than in like the past 15 years
StarJekker 2 years ago
Well, if you read it carefully you may see that it states GLOBAL warming, not "warming especially in western canada". This "global warming" is many kinds of things all around the world and not only warming in Canada. Floods, droughts, storms etc.. One winter doesn't tell the whole truth. I do not know about Canada but here in scandinavia temperatures might drop quite a lot if the Gulf stream weakens due to the melting of glaciers of the North pole.
Greetings from Finland =)

@Mustatuuli global wamring in a sence that was know maybe .2% of why its caused, more evidence of that .2% falls to the earth cycles thingy... makes sence, ice melts than it comes back better to be here when it melts or when it comes back?
draconite420 1 year ago

It occurs every 18-24 months.
lmaestro 2 years ago 29
@lmaestro all nz glaciers are advancing due to global warming you faggot
bloodriver3lol 1 year ago
@lmaestro Fail. From the Wiki: The glacier first ruptured in 1917, taking with it an ancient forest of arrayán (Luma apiculata) trees. The last rupture occurred in July 2008, and previously in 2006, 2004, 1988, 1984, 1980, 1977, 1975, 1972, 1970, 1966, 1963, 1960, 1956, 1953, 1952, 1947, 1940, 1934 and 1917. It ruptures, on average, about every four to five years.

It's the cycle after we melt we freeze again.
All the planets in our solar system are getting hotter because....do you know why?
No not green house gasses, SUV's, how many cows you have or how many cigarettes you smoke
NO!
The sun's getting hotter so that means the earth is as well along with the rest of the planets.
Then why all the GREEN movement carbon emotion stuff?
TAXES TAXES TAXES all sorts of them.
Beware the Green movement and the Obama administration they will rob you blind!

its amazing to see but i wouldnt be cheering. there was a mini icu age from the 17th the late 19th century, some climatologists are saying the climate is going to cool down over the next few years.
any1 help me on understanding why? cant seem to get my head around it!!
j17de 3 years ago
fuck this shit......
how come the people is cheering and celebrating...
do they know that if this keeps going, we are all going to die?
why?
because of the sea level, it will go up if glaciers keep on melting
untouchable1412 3 years ago
We're all going to die if the sealevel goes up? Don't be so dramatic there, partner. Earth's been warming and cooling for billions of years. Nothing new.
SneakyC9 3 years ago
Exactly you have a brain my friend :D
GodBlessTheUSA1 3 years ago
exactly. the earth has been warming and cooling for billions of years. and we obviously were not on the earth for billions of years. but today, we are experiencing large amounts of glacier decrease, which would have effect on our oceans and leave sea levels rising.

Why do you think, that there's so many people on that exact spot? It's annual event..

Polar Bear Listed as Threatened Species
ALASKA DAILY NEWS BULLETIN 5-14-2008
"WASHINGTON -- Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne announced Wednesday that the agency will list the polar bear as threatened under the Endangered Species Act, a decision that could cast the bears as the enduring symbol of the effects of global warming."
THANK YOU Secretary Kempthorne !!
And thank you Al Gore, Greenpeace, Arnold, National Geographic, the EU... etc. you made a difference.

jedimastersupercat 3 years ago
La mansa cagada...bonito..bonito...pero, la mansa cagada , a este ritmo el glaciar va a desaparecer..y a nadie le va importar un puto carajo.
productors 3 years ago

I Hope I answer all your doubts.
nacexc 4 years ago
This event doesn't have nothing to do with global warming. This event used to happend every 4 years, but in 1982 it was the last time it happend until last year when it started again, and this year also, these are images from this year's collapsation.
nacexc 4 years ago 2
This is the Perito Moreno Glacias, in Calafte, Argentina. Its one of the only active glaciars in the world. This means that the glaciar collapses and it build's it self back again. This glaciar its between to lakes that connect to each other. When the glaciar blocks the connection between the two lakes, the water in one lake rises. Then the water pressure causes the collapsation of the glaciar.

its cool to see that but its also sad to see how quickly glaciers are receding
