  • @SlideGuitaristUK My pleasure. Good luck. Enjoy.

  • Hey Keni,

Great playing, what gauge strings are on your Alhambra? i have my eye on one these at the moment which is in Holland. Do you have any tips on what to look out for with this model and what is a fair price (in Europe)?

    Thanks

    Chris

  • Nice blues !

  • Thank you for your comment. Enjoy.

  • Hell yeah, that's the sound I'm a-lookin' for, bubba!

  • Thank you. Here is one more important thing worth looking into. There are two different styles of resonating cones used inside a resonator guitar. This one is the spider bridge cone. Commonly called a Dobro guitar. Mainly C&W lap players have this in their guitars. It has a different tone than the earlier National guitar biscuit bridge cone found in the guitars that Bukka White and Son House played. I only have this one Dobro. The other guitars have National style cones. Enjoy.

  • So, which one should I look for when buying a resonator guitar? Like I previously mentioned, I would like to have something similar to what Muddy Waters played. So, that would be National guitar biscuit bridge, sir? Thanks.

  • Yes, many early blues masters (Son House, Bukka White, Blind Boy Fuller, etc.) played National resonators with biscuit bridges. But many other early blues players like Charlie Patton, Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, Mississippi Fred Mcdowell etc, played bottleneck on standard guitars. Nationals were very expensive. A National in 1930 could cost $40. A standard guitar $3.50. But in my opinion, if you have good technique, a resonator will make slide even better. Enjoy.

  • Just like a banjo in open tuning (tuned to a chord) the resonator guitar works the same way. You get all that extra tone because all the strings are vibrating. A banjo has a skin, a resonator guitar has an aluminum cone. Enjoy.

  • bad ass dude

  • Thank you. Enjoy.

  • WOW, KeniLee!

    That is most excellent!!!

  • Thank you. Please visit my main page and click on the Playlists. The videos are organized to make your selection easier and your visit more enjoyable.

  • That was awesome, man. I was gonna suggest Dust My Broom, but I see in the side bar that you already have it. Excellent work, keep em coming :D

  • Thank you. Please go to my page and click on Playlists. The videos are organized to make your visit more enjoyable.

  • that was amazing!

    jeez! good work.

  • Thank you. Enjoy.

  • you are awesome!!!

  • Thank you.

  • Keni all you need are some suspenders and you are good to go sir.

  • Thank you for your comment. Oh...No...suspenders are only necessary when your belly is so big, a belt don't work. Now wearing overalls is a different thing. Enjoy.

  • you should the big joe willams version

  • Thank you for your comment. Yes, that is a great version. My version is based on my studies of Open tuning and exploring the fingerboard. Happy Holidays Enjoy.

  • great song either way

  • Thank you.

  • Accomplishment achieved through exacting and instinctful execution...I know, kind of wordy, but how I felt just the same.

KeniLee...you might be "Out of your time"

and listening to your music makes me want to go back with ya.

  • Thank you for the kind words. I grew up as a young man listening to Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin and the Rolling Stones. During my days in the USAF living down south, I felt a connection to the past through Country and Blues music. Although I like modern music, I never went back. Come on, we'll ride that train until the break of day...Enjoy.

  • USAF? Hmmm, I knew there was something else I liked about ya.

That means we have a couple of things in common.

  • Yes, 1982 -1986. Weather equipment radar. Stationed at Kelly AF base, San Antonio TX.

  • Christ you're good. I love that gravel in your voice as well. Great stuff.

  • Thank you for such a kind compliment. Enjoy my friend.

  • Great playing man. I really dig that low tuning. Do u have any tabs for this?

  • Thank you. I havn't done this song as a lesson yet. Sorry no tab. It appears on the Series 1 instructional CD as a Cigar Box Guitar lesson. If you are interested in learning Bottleneck Slide, please consider purchasing one of my instructional CDs. They contain a wealth of fundamental information that will allow you to figure out this song yourself just by watching the video. Very reasonable priced. Visit ebay. Search Keni Lee Thanks again for your interest. Enjoy.

  • what tuning are you using?

  • Sorry, should have read the description, i now see its in C.

Great playing though mate, S'got me reaching for my slide.

  • Thank you for your comment. Please feel free to write if you have any questions. Enjoy.

  • Hey Keni, this is a super video. What a groove. You have a lovely feel and great hands. Well done.

  • Thank you for the kind words. Well, I guess when you really love what your doing, it kind of shines thru. Trust me, it is not the same when I'm digging a ditch. lol.

Also, for me, this is my arrangement, so I feel very comfortable with it. I definately have a totally different feeling when I'm playing songs I learned from other players. Even though I didn't write this song, doing it my way gives me a special connection. Thanks again.

  • high end! 5 stars for you my friend!

  • Thank you.

  • Very cool groove!

  • Thank you.

  • great playing. I had to do a double take when you started singing. Your voice doesn't fit your look. You sing like you have lived the blues, but you don't look it. I'm not trying to be mean just saying your voice does this guitar justice. most people singing the blues don't have the right feel but you have the passion.

    nice job

  • Thank you for your comment. Well, Living the Blues is a relative thing. I certainly did not live the hard life of Blind Willie Johnson, but I've seen some dark days. Singing in lower tunings gives the music it's traditional sound. The guitar is tuned to my voice. The other end is also true. Robert Johnson tuned and capo-ed up to Open B. I can't sing that high, but the guitar sounds just like the record.

  • i like it! wish someone would post how to play like this

  • Thank you. I post free lessons here on youtube. After I finish a Series, I burn the videos to CD and include a downloadable tablature file. The CDs are available for sale on ebay. Just search: Keni Lee Series 2 will be available soon. Series 3 will be available free, here on youtube soon. If you are interested in learning this style, please consider starting with the Series 1 CD. It teaches the method I use to arrange and figure out songs. It is only $9.99 Thanks again for your interest.

  • i think this is amazing.

  • Thank you for the kind words.

  • sounds cool blues ain't supposed to be perfect ..you got the sound. Do you got some of this on dvd? if not you should.

  • Thank you for the kind words. Currently, I'm working on a documentary film called the Street Performer that should be completed soon.

  • Great playing, you really mastered guitar in open G.Still,I think your voice have more potential.

  • Thank you. I guess I'm like a lot of other guitar players: spent many hours working on the guitar, but not enough on learning to sing. I've taken some voice lessons. Actually, the songs on my CD are pitched higher, so my voice is much stronger. But I enjoy singing in the lower keys because it is easier on my throat. I wouldn't mind studying more voice. It really helps you hear music better and, improves the ability to match the notes in your head to the ones on the guitar.

  • arrgh, this isn't by Muddy Waters.

Baby Please Dont Go is made by the great Big Joe Williams!

  • Yes, you are correct. Big Joe Williams did write Baby, Please Don't Go, but it was Muddy Waters's performance that influenced my arrangement of this song. Thank you for you comment.

  • okay then ;) you had me disapointed there a second :P

  • Nice Dobro, bro!!

  • Thank you. Once it was set up correctly with a new quarterman cone and a compensated bridge, she rang real nice.

  • good one keni 5 stars

  • Thank you. This was one of those arrangements, that made me understsand how to arrange another song. Please see Smokestack Lightin' video. As you know, that's what I love about the Blues, it's resourceful and recycleable.

  • fantastic, just off to buy your cd, not many players like you in Ireland!!

  • Thank you for your comment, and purchasing my CD. Feel free to write if you have any questions, and please give me your opinion of the CD.

  • so it's like a dobro/resignator? It lookes awsome!! very nice vocals btw!!

  • Yes, it has a dobro/spider bridge resonator. The model is M14. The Dobro brand models have round sound holes with crosses, and the Regal models have f holes. This is the only "dobro" I own. It's tone is definately warmer and more evenly balanced treble to bass than the biscuit bridge Nationals.

  • omg did u have to take out a second mortgage on the guitar what is it bye the way?

  • No, this was another ebay find about five years ago. It's a 1935? Fiddle Edge made by Dobro but sold by Regal. It was a "Buy it Now" for $1200.

  • truth be told i found this by accident, but im glad i did, wow man great. now i have to stop by here often.

  • Thank you. Please visit my page. Clicking "Playlists" will make your visit easier.

  • Did you take lessons or did you just play around the house ??? Cause i gotta tell ya I've watched just about all your videos and i think you and your buddy is the shit man !!! Im a metal player but Im really into tryin to play the blues and i need lessons or practice !!!! If you can help me im in Biloxi, Ms ..... thanks and please keep the videos coming !!

  • Thank you. I have an instructional video CD for sale on ebay. Go to ebay and search: Keni Lee It is only $9.99 and contains almost 2 hours of lessons plus a file containing sheet music tablature. I've sold almost 300 of them, and not only do the lessons contain fundamental training, but information to learn to arrange songs by yourself. Please check it out. If you have any further questions please feel free to write. Thank you for your interest.

  • nice, one of the better things here on YouTube. Thanks. 5/5

  • Thank you. Please visit my page. Recently, I organized the videos into groups to make visiting easier and more enjoyable. Just click: "Playlists".

  • great job! sounds awesome!

  • will do

  • hey man, i like your voice and guitar playing on this tune! it sounds down and dirty... the blues ain't supposed to be pretty, ya know what i mean? honestly, i hear some robert johnson in there but you play better than him. keep on truckin'

  • Thank you for your kind words. Please visit my page.

  • I tried searching for your CD and couldn't find it...are there any more available?

  • Yes, there are more available. The auction just ended. I will be posting a new "Buy It Now" auction shortly.

  • Thanks, I just bought one. Looking forward to learning.

    G.

  • Thank you for your purchase.

  • How many grits and corn meal gravy have you had to eat Mr White Boy!!!!!

  • Thank you for your comment. I do like grits (with butter and salt and pepper), but I don't think I've had corn meal gravy. Now, biscuits and gravy with fried eggs is one of my favorite treats. If you throw is a chicken fried steak, now your talkin'

  • It's sounds like the original. Fantastic!

  • Thank you.

  • Oh man this is dirty, I love the original too, but yours has a nice grit to it

  • Thank you. Have you ever heard Muddy Waters's Plantation CD? It contains the old country recordings before he went to Chicago and developed his city band sound. I based this song on his early style of playing. Check the CD out, it's very raw and gritty. You can hear his teacher's (Son House) influence.

  • did u learn this by ear? im trying to learn some blues at the mo by ear but not having much luck, its difficult to hear whats goin on. Any tips? great playing btw,im very envious:D

  • Thank you for your kind words. Yes, I made my arrangement based on Muddy Waters's original version. If you are interested in learning this style, please consider buying my instructional CD currently available on Ebay. Just search: Keni Lee. The CD is very easy to learn from, and will start you down the right road. Thanks again. Keep in touch.

  • That was some nice playing, are youre instructional vids available in the U.K?

  • Thank you. Yes, the CD is available to the U.K. Please go to Ebay and Search: Keni Lee The "Buy It Now" auction is currently running.

  • really nice playing bro, enjoyed the voice as much as guitar.

  • Thank you. I've been working on my singing. The secret is to make sure and play your guitar in the correct key for your voice. Don't force your voice to follow the guitar.

  • impressed me at least as the original version

  • Thank you for your comment.

  • excellent rendition

  • Thank you.

  • have you got a tab for this... I cant find good blues tabs anywhere. great playing

  • Thank you. Sorry, currently I have no tabs for this song, but have you seen my Instructional Video CD on Ebay? Just search: Keni Lee It contains tab for all the lessons and songs. After completing the lessons, I know you will have no trouble figuring this song out by yourself. Thanks again.

  • Thanks for the little confidence boost there dude! Im of to ebay :)

  • Thank you. Please stay in touch, and tell me how you like the Instructional CD.

  • Hey Keni, the new open G series is great- thanks! I've been working on this Muddy Waters tune, and have been struggling with the lick at 0:24 - 0:25 seconds (also at "cause I love ya so", etc.). Is that a hammer down, a pull-off, or both?

  • Thank you. Hold 3rd 1st fret, pick & hammer 2nd fret, pick 2nd open, pick 3rd 1st fret, pick 4th 3rd fret, pick 4th open. Hey, now am I a nice guy or what? Please write and tell me if you get this lick down.

  • Thanks, Keni- now I've got it. You're a gentleman and a scholar! I've ordered your Open D cd (waiting for it to arrive), and am loving your Open G series- keep it up! It's really appreciated.

  • Thank you. I'm glad you got the rest of the song. Please feel free to write if you have any other questions. Enjoy!

  • excelente.

  • Thank you. Please watch my other videos. Also, if you are a guitar player, check out my free instructional videos, and the video CD available for sale on Ebay.

  • Hey! Thats a sweet rendition man! Sounds awesome!

  • Thank you. Please check out my other vids.

  • I like the sound of your guitar playing better than the original version It sounds very wicked I like your style

  • Thank you. Ya, there is always something a little dark about the sound of a resonator guitar. I think it's that warm electric guitar sustain that you can't get from a regular acoustic.

  • Hello Keni,

Thanks for the tip. If i ever lucky enough to sumble over one of these pearls I would be sure to take it to someone who knows what they are doing.

Quick question. A friend of mine told me that he thought you were working on a CD - is this true or perhaps you have a CD out. If so where can I buy one?

    Regards, Stu

  • Hello Stu, My cd is almost done. It's been 3 years in the making. There are many musicians, and various intruments. I'm actually going to sit down now, and practice the lead guitar track for Baby Please Don't Go. I'm hoping to release some time in Sept. It has been an unbelievable experience making a cd. I now know the great amount of work that is involved. I will post a video with all the information when it is available. Thanks for your interest.

  • Hello Keni,

That Regal really has a wonderful, warm, mellow tone. Just proves the point that if a resonator is looked after and played it will actually improve with age. Not only that it will also gain in value. Keep a resonator long enough and people will be begging you to sell it to them.

Resonators are a good investment. In fact it is everyones patriotic duty to go out, buy one NOW and learn to play.

    All the best, Stu

  • Thank you Stu, Actually most vintage resonator that are around today had some form of restoration. The original tuners did not come with this guitar. I replaced the cheap replacements with high quality waverly butterbeans. The cone is a quarterman cone with compensated bridge for correct intonation. This work was done by an experienced resonator builder. If you buy vintage you need to consider the cost of good restoration.

  • how much did that bad boy cost u?

  • The 1935? fiddle edge Regal was another great ebay find. I bought it maybe five years ago as a buy-it-now for $1200. It's the only dobro (spider cone) I own. It has a warm electric sound, and it's nice to play when I want to sound more classy and up town.

  • Man, I wish I had a resonator that nice. Hell, I wish I had a resonator.

  • Thank you. Well this is the deal. Nice things cost money, but they bring satisfaction. There are basically two price ranges, about $400 and over $1500. I know of a few lower end reso that are not bad, but for good tone, and no mechanical problems you need to spend some cash. If you want vintage, now that's an other kettle of fish!

  • You've got a real soulful voice, man.

  • Thank you.

  • WOW,............. is there a lesson posted

  • Thank you. I'll be starting lessons in Open G in Sept. Please stay tuned.

  • This song is played in Open D or E. If you work thru the lessons you will have no trouble figuring this one out. Go for it!

  • You got the real blues baby... Great sounds thanks

  • That was amazing. It's a shame i dont have 4 grand, or i'd get myself a 1930 national and post some vids of my own. somehow this stuff just dosnt sound right on an acoustic most of the time.

  • Fantastic!! I want to get myself one of those resonator guitars now :P

  • Ya, Resonators rule!

  • sounds good do some robert johnson

  • Thank you. This video is a Muddy Water's tune.

  • hey man you are really good. i love the blues guitar but i had no idea how to play until i looked at your lessons. thanks a lot man.

  • Thank you. It has been a great experience filming and sharing the lessons. I've met so many kind people. I'm glad you find the lessons informative. Enjoy.

  • Real nice,....got something original in there; good interpretation!

  • Thank you. Also, thank you for the videos.

  • You know if you looked up "badass" in the dictionary, this video would be there.

    Simply amazing!

    Dave

  • Thank you Dave. Old Muddy had a way of telling it like it is.

  • Thanks for all the great videos/lessons. I watched your first three lessons and look forward to catching up when I get the time. Unfortuenalty, as a pilot I have some odd schedules and haven't had much free time as of late. Although I have it pretty good, I connect with the delta blues more than any other style. With your online lessons, I've been able to pick it up little by little as time permits. Thankyou, and let me know when that CD your recording becomes available.

  • Thank you. Please stay in touch, and tell me how the lessons are working for you. Also, if possible, when you are ready post a video so I can see you play. I'm trying to get the cd done, but like you know, work is always getting in the way of a good old time of sitting in the parlor playing music. Enjoy.

  • VERY NICE!!

  • THANK YOU!!

  • Finally someone on YouTube whose voice and singing i like while he is playing guitar. Very nice nice version.

  • Thank you. I been working on my voice. I find singing a lot harder than playing guitar. On the guitar, push down on the right fret with your finger and that's that. Getting the right note with your voice is a whole other thing.

  • Not to mention doing both at the same time.

  • Very impressive, Keni. Keep it up.

  • Thank you.

  • that was awesome! I'd like to learn this song, could you make a video-lesson about this and put here on youtube?? :D regards kamfit...

  • Thank you. Have you studied my video lessons? This song is relatively easy. The material in the lessons will help you understand how I arrange songs. Please try working thru the lessons, then try to figure out this song. If you still have difficulties, I will be glad to help you.

  • better than AC/DC's version

  • Thank you. I've never heard that version. Angus Young is a great guitarist.

  • Awesome! Great Guitar and you are really good. I am feeling it. How long have you been playing?

  • Thank you. I bought this guitar on ebay. It has a big open sound. I've been playing Bottleneck for about 15 years. Please watch my other videos.

  • Nice!

  • Thank you.

  • great stuff as usual!!my tricone is nearly finished !!thanx for the advice!probably have to remortgage the house to pay for it!!!( old ,year unknown, palm tree engravings ,wrecked in a car crash, have written to national to see if they can date it,hopefully worth the investment.hope u and the family(and dog)r all well!regards bluespower...

  • Thank you. I restored my 1935 Duolian. It was a money pit too. Neck from National, Waverly tuners, cone and biscuit, Highlander pick up system (Why? I don't know, I never play electric)duco crystaline paint job. With the grace of God, I hope I never have to restore again. But, it is my favorite and best playing guitar. After the smoke clears and they remove the dead bodies, you will be very happy. Make sure you post something after it is completed. I want to see it. Enjoy!

  • Check out Bob Brozman's book"The history and artistry of national Resonator Instruments"..It's got a big list of serial numbers that will give you a lot of info...keep slidin'

  • man ole man sweet as a rattlesnack watermelon.

  • Thank you. I'm not sure what you mean, but it must be a hell of a compliment! Thanks again.
