@Blackthorne2010 Yeah the music in this film is awesome. There was this one version of the fmj theme and it was the best one but it was taken down due to copyright or some bs.

One of the greatest scenes in movie history. Of course you can't understand it unless you've seen the hell the sergeant puts Leonard through, and knowing that he's got a weak streak, and only Joker tries to help him. He's not the kind of material any army wants. The sergeants method of breaking down and rebuilding as marines fails with him, because he just breaks down, and sees no way out of the world of shit he's in. One of the most memorable quotes too. "I am in a world of shit."
@XrGxMYTHiCzz The USMC wasn't issued with M1 Carbines in the 60s...anyway, the M1A1 Carbine is the paratroop version with a folding metal stock. Certainly isn't one on Pyle's gun. It's an M14.
Someone needs to post the morbid soundtrack that plays in the background! Ohhh and the score that is played when the GIs are searching for the female sniper! Favorite part of the movie for me :)
Pyle's eye were scary stuff in this scene. Great acting. Can't believe that movie is now almost 25 years old. Good Morning Vietnam is my favourite 'nam movie, but FMJ is a close second.
this scene ruined the whole movie r lee ermy played the best character in this movie if dumbass private pyle had just left if he couldnt take boot camp him and the sargent would have lived and this movie wouldnt have been nearly as depressing
I've always wanted to see a scene like this. Never before have I seen a soldier pushed too hard and actually go off the brink like Pyle did. When I look at it outwardly, Hartmann was being a dumbass. I mean, what kind of soldier would just ignore the fact that someone has their gun trained on you and willing to fire? Not to mention, the rather subtle sounds such as the gun cock at 3:32 and Pyles's breathing noise brings a terrifying aura to the scene itself. One of the best since Pulp Fiction.
WHO TOLD YOU TO DO THAT SPIN WHEN MOUNTING YOUR GUN ON YOUR SHOULDER?! WHO SAID YOU COULD BE MR. FANCYPANTS WHEN GOING INSANE?! I BET YOUR DADDY FUCKED YOUR MOMMY IN THE ASS ON THE DAY THEY CONCEIVED YOU PRIVATE PYLE! NOT ONLY ARE YOU A FUCKING QUEER, BUT LIKE YOUR NAME YOU'RE GIVING ME A PAIN IN MY ASS! NOW GIVE ME THAT GUN AND GIVE ME TWENTY!
This part of the film will always be stuck within my mind, the face of Pyle as Joker walks in, the dialogue, the lighting, everything! This part always told me to never fuck with people with mental or self-esteem issues and if possible, help them, cause one day when they go Postal, you will at least have a chance of surviving. I hope ya'll take this message into account.
The main duty of a soldier is to kill his enemies before they kill him. From this premise, Pvt. Pyle's performance was almost flawless, if we exclude the whole suicide thing.

@ihatekate08 That all depends. If you call the DI Sergeant and you are an Officer, nothing will happen. If you call him Sir and you are in the Army, the work for a living speech will be given, pushups and/or other punishment will follow. A Marine DI, I hope pain is something you enjoy.
@chrismc410 Actually, seeing as how I went through the 13 weeks, ran the drills, PT'ed til my ass was suckiing buttermilk as Gunnery Sergeant Ermey would say, and I've earned my title as a US Marine. Trust me "Sir" I KNOW pain.
@chrismc410 Lookin back on it, there wasn't anything that I did that wasn't difficult. Yeah, sure it was painful but I did it. Moslty because being a Marine was all I had wanted to do since I was like 11. The fact that I pulled through makes it seem like it was easy, but now that you mention it, I hurt like hell when I came home on my 30 day. My throat was so sore from yelling "Yes, sir" "No, sir" and "Aye-aye, sir" that I could barely talk. But I came out a stronger person because of it.
He was arrogant and self-indulgent. His failure to tell the difference between that and real leadership ruined someone's life got himself killed. The degree of his arrogance is most evident in this scene: not even a loaded gun could knock sense into him.
@Sephiroth1984 Calling a DI arrogant is meaningless. That's what they do. Private Pyle was a head case and had unraveled. Would you want him in your unit? He'd get you killed. I believe the insults about his parents got the Gunny shot, but the way of disarming someone is to show no fear and to be firm. You'd be surprised at how many people comply. If the Gunny would have cowered, there would have been an entire tent of bloodshed. They all abused him. Only Joker tried helping him.
First, you have to make up your mind about whether you DO want somebody in your unit or not. Apparently this DI did. For that matter, do you think the DI could even take credit for the fact that the private figured out he was good at something (shooting)? I don't.
In this situation, pacifying the guy would have been better.
As any kind of warrior, this DI was causeless and it is clear consequence that he didn't even die on a battlefield.
@Sephiroth1984 You don't determine who is in your unit. The other thing is you don't pacify a guy with a gun. That's exactly what they want. Have you even had a gun held to you? You'd really have a situation on your hands if you did that. The entire barracks would have been wiped out. The DI took a bullet for the men. That's what he was supposed to do in that situation. That is the other reason he walked forward. This is not like talking down your child. However, I wouldn't dish out insults.
The entire barracks would have been wiped out if not for Joker handling the situation the right way. Hartman showed the utmost stupidity and arrogance in this scene, and proves that he truly was a bastard. He didn't take a bullet for his men, he tried to intimidate Pyle, who had lost his mind and had a loaded gun at him. He was reckless and stupid, and Hartman almost got all the others killed so he could show how tough he was. The others could thank Joker that they survived.
for the sake of argument. it's generally understood that marines are trained to take orders without any second thought, and Hartman was just following general protocol in his assumption that Pyle would obey orders dished out objectively, no? Nonetheless, there's still are those few who aren't the machines the Marines would like them to be

The first time we hear Gunny speaking in his normal voice.
The suicide looks so accurate.
On DVD I played this back one frame at a time.
Don't know how they did it.
In EMS, I've seen the real thing and this looks just like it.
There should have been some smoke coming out of Pyle's mouth..

did anyone else notice that he sat down on the fourth toilet before he killed himself, but then he and the blood spatters magically moved to the third toilet?

@puertoricandude16 Spacetime distortions. Pyle was THAT pissed.

Kubrick used his horror skills from The Shining to make Pvt. Pyle looks scary.

Matthew Modine is one of the worst actors...Matthew and Eric Stolz should've quit the business ages ago.

That most certainly is not an M-16 it is the standard training rifle M-1 Grand
Xmatron 1 year ago
@Xmatron its an M14 :P the M-1 Grand was used on the field for targets but each soldier got their own M14
