  • It didn't work.. I'm extremely ugly and my computer said "I'm not working with that thing!"

  • Wow. I am a special effect artist and taught 3D in past. I think whoever going to learn 3D he should start from here then to higher level. Very useful for teaching. Now onward I will show this video to texturing people to teach 3D texturing concept.

  • mmmmmmmmmmmmmm. Test py...

  • @themanyone could you have made the texture grid lock onto the correct place on the image?

  • @seeriktus Not automatically. Once it's projected onto the mesh, it's locked to it.

  • @dipingo when exporting as a python script select export all instead of limit to 1500 or something.

  • so you made a timeconsuming video-cameratracking just to get a texture of your face on a lowpoly 3d head? didn't get the point. Funny rushing into the picture at the beginning, though :)

  • What was the program that you used to save the video as as a jpeg sequence?

  • Too much trouble for a sub par model...

  • Thank you! This is a great tutorial and It was very helpful to me.

  • thanks for the video! any idea how to edit the point cloud after running the script? points all vanish when i tab into edit.

  • quick question, is there away setting to have Voodoo avoid dumping any points. It seems to remove moving points which are the ones I want.

  • thanks henry!

  • import blender is not in my python script. blender cannot run it

  • That was an awesome workflow! Great video!

  • Hi I use Linux Ubuntu , and Linux Mint, I was wanting to know is there any software for that is free and open that can take a group of numbered images and put them into an AVI in number order ... It takes me to long to click and drag one at a time... See I render some of me 3D in Bender as PNG then edit them using MyPaint , and gimp to add fun effect... But putting it back together as an AVI is a pain any help would be great... Thanks

  • @maw88ify GIMP does animations and can open a series of images as layers. With the Gimp Animation Package (GAP) these can be saved as an AVI. This can also be done with ffmpeg and a custom script from the command line, but I'll leave the explanation to someone who wants to impress us with the amount of free time on their hands.

  • @themanyone No need I just used Google to look up your suggestions.

    sudo apt-get install gimp-gap

    and

Turn X images to a video sequence

    ffmpeg -f image2 -i image%d.jpg video.mpg

This command will transform all the images from the current directory (named image1.jpg, image2.jpg, etc…) to a video file named video.mpg.

Thanks for the help that's all I needed to know.

  • or you could use the freeware software facegen modeller :O

  • @ColloseusXReturns It runs under Windows XP, Vista and 7... I don't see Linux do you ? :O

and facegen modeller is NOT free or open it cost ( $299 ) ... :O

  • @maw88ify Why would anyone use Linux for doing special effects? and yeah they are charging for the facegen modeller now but i'm pretty sure it used to be freeware

  • @ColloseusXReturns You clear know nothing about Linux in the 3D world ... Linux is used all the time in clusters, and render farms ... Here are some 3D software made for Linux "Houdini 3d" used to make movies like "Scott Pilgrim" and "Iron Man 2" ... "Pixar's Renderman" made for Linux render farms.... there are tons of 3D software for Linux, and Linux has been used by movie companies for years because it's not a resource hog like Windows ... and have you seen Blender 2.5 Beta ?

  • @maw88ify Mentioning Blender in your argument has just nullified it sorry...

  • @ColloseusXReturns Blinder 2.5 beta is amazing...

Look at "Sintel - Third Open Movie by Blender Foundation" all made Blender 2.5 . 3D programs as simple as swift3D cost $600 dollars U.S. ... It can do a lot more than facegen the program you pointed out that cost $300 dollars U.S.

I would say Blender 2.5 is as good as " Lightwave " that cost $895.00

Blender 3D 2.5 has a new fire / smoke simulator, a cloth simulator, hair , Water simulator, Softbody jell , and a 3D sculpt mode...

  • @maw88ify I would rather use professional software like 3ds max rather than using a program that when compared to 3ds max is basically a polished turd. If you are excited about cloth physics and a smoke / fire simulator then you are living in the past my friend..... that's old news.... need to get with the times..

  • @ColloseusXReturns You have to compare a $6,000 dollar software program that you downloaded for piratebay with Blender 3D 2.5 a free program. HAHA I would hope to hell that a $6,000 dollar program would be better than a free one. That's so dumb of an argument that I shouldn't even reply. "Houdini 3d" , and "Pixar's Renderman" made for Linux and to Quote: Autodesk web site "Maya 2011 is also capable of running on distributions of Linux. " You lost this fight before you even opened your mouth.

  • @maw88ify yes i "lost" this "fight".... dude you don't even know when you are getting trolled.....yes i lost this fight on the internet and you won... congratulations winning an argument on the internet is like running in the special olympics even if you win you're still retarded...

  • @ColloseusXReturns I know what a Troll is you dumb ass. Are you so stupid that you don't know a "troll hunter" when you see one ? For fun I go around youtube looking for people that think they are Trolls so I can bring them out in the open, and shoot them in the head in front of everyone . Then I move on to the next punk kid that thinks they are a "Troll" . It's just my hobby a way for me to take out my stress. I hunt trolls for sport it's fun, and plus it keeps my mind sharp.

  • @ColloseusXReturns Blender takes a skilled animator to uses, because it doesn't have a long list of modifiers, and MOCAP to simplify the animation process . Most likely you got picked on a lot in school so you started being an ass to try to make yourself feel better about having poor self esteem. Now your only friends on-line, or play call of duty. The funny thing is I would have worked on 3D projects with you, and maybe even added you as a friend on facebook , but you can forget about now ;)

  • @maw88ify Why would i want to work with you or add you as a friend? you're a geek who loves blender and get's trolled by smarter people... sounds like you're the one desperate to add some friends on facebook... I only add real friends i know sorry and furthermore my videos are a lot better than yours, you have no special effect videos

  • @ColloseusXReturns True I love blender but I also have 3DS Max , Maya 3D "you have no special effect videos" >> that's where your wrong I'm the Artist of FlashCadabra(dot)com. Plus I made "Reactor and fumefx test", and I have another video call "Does it work in Ubuntu Linux" where I show that 3DS Max does work in Linux. "my videos are a lot better than yours" you have "cloth simulation" and so do I. You know how to use MOCAP files. HAHAHA who doesn't that crap is easy .

  • @ColloseusXReturns Yes smoke / fire , and water simulator is available in 3DS Max a 5 or $6,000 US if you want to spend another $845 US dollar for FumeFX / AfterBurn , and another $3995 realfow ... VS Blender that is free and can do all of that with out buying anything , and has a built in game engine ...

    3DS Max if you didn't pirate it would cost $6,000 + $845 FumeFX / AfterBurn + $3995 realfow = $10,840 US

VS Blender 3D 2.5 that is free .

  • @maw88ify Nope you don't need to download those extra apps, it comes built in and Blender is free for a reason and that is because it is shit

  • @ColloseusXReturns Just because you not skilled enough to use Blender , and have to use 3DS Max because it has modifiers, and MOCAP to do your animation doesn't mean Blender sucks... what it really means is you suck ... Beside most animation company use Maya 3D , and 3DS Max is used more for game making ... The free smoke / fire , and water simulator in Blender is better than the free simulator crap in 3DS Max it's a fact... You have a WAVE modifiers WOW how cool... you're a joke.

  • @maw88ify hahaha what a kid, dude Blender is used by children... I know 6 year olds who can use Blender... It just shows you how shit it is, Ah well maybe in the future when you learn about Animating etc, you will understand what programs are better...

  • @ColloseusXReturns I know kids that Troll like you , and use 3DS Max that down-loaded it from pirate-bay just like you. Being a Troll, and pirating software is very grown up. Good job . Have fun starting a company using pirated software... Make sure to message me , and tell me how much jail time you get... Let me quote myself seeing how you seem to have short term memory loss "I would hope to hell that a $6,000 dollar program would be better than a free one."

  • @maw88ify Who said i wanted to start a business? i appreciate that you think my videos are good enough to start a business, that's very kind of you :)

  • @ColloseusXReturns You are funny I'll give you points on the "special olympics" that made me laugh.

To bad your you're a tool , and a douchebag. Next time I hear from you I bet you'll have Mac computer , some black mock turtleneck with blue jeans. If your going to be douchebag you should go all out, and buy a Mac. That's what douchebag that think the are animators do. No real douchebag don't use Windows for 3D, but to bad 3DS Max isn't made for Mac. You'll have to learn how to use Maya3D .

  • @maw88ify I would rather use Maya3D than use Blender though, at least i will be able to do some proper animating

  • @ColloseusXReturns You did see "Sintel" that was made all Blender 2.5 3D correct ? You do know that Blender 2.5 look nothing like 2.49 they change the whole U.I. "Blender 2.5" beta looks better than " Lightwave " that cost $895.00 , and "Cinema 4d" $ 494.95, and way better than swift3D cost $600. So as of right now Blender 3D 2.5 is better than software that cost up to a 1,000 dollars and is free. Do you even know what the goal of the open source, and free software movement is ?

  • @maw88ify Listen kid, you are talking about things you have no idea about... Blender is good for childrens projects and university projects but it is not a proper commerical tool, those videos you see are made by groups of experts and they are made to make you think blender is better than it actually is... anyway do what you want and you will learn the hard way

  • @ColloseusXReturns "those videos you see are made by groups of experts"

There you go it was made by experts. Thank you for proving my point ! Like I told you over, and over you have to know what you doing to use Blender. It must be your short term memory loss acting up again. Like I said over and over a real animator doesn't need modifiers, and Blender 2.5 works great if you are an experts "it doesn't have a long list of modifiers, and MOCAP to simplify the animation process"

  • @maw88ify Your last comment has nullified your argument sorry, You may apoligize any time you wish :)

  • @ColloseusXReturns So let me see if I can get this right. You said it takes "groups of experts" to make something good in Blender. Ya all movies are made by groups of experts. Then you also said "Blender is used by children" " 6 year olds" ... but Hold on I thought you said it takes an expert to make a Blender film, but it's so easy a kid could use it ? So what you're saying is a small group of 6 year old children could do better work than you. amazing it is very brave of you to admit that.

  • @ColloseusXReturns Let me see if I understand what you're saying. What you said was if a group of 3D "experts" wanted to start a company , but didn't have a lot of money they could use Blender 2.5 to get their business off the ground ? I couldn't agree more, because only a nut job would start a company with pirated software . I think I will add you on facebook .

  • GEEKKKKKKKK!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I say an A for ingenuity but I dont believe this is a practical method. In blender its all about low polly looking the best it can and when you shrink rap a sphere to 1000 verts, it just dons't provide the accuracy needed.

That being said this is WAY above my head. I think this is an awesome tool for my tool box and I can't wait to think of some way to practically apply this method. Awesome find!

  • jeez why make all that images jpegs? just load the entire video in the blender video secuence editor select you end/start frame save as targa and bam!

  • Great stuff, thanks!

  • Cooooooool

  • Nice work figuring it out. The end geometry is not ideal though for animation; it might be easier to start from scratch and model it with proper edge loops, etc. Have you tried to quadrify the mesh before projecting?

  • hey i like your gigs post your gigs on gigme5.com there traffic is too good and you will find more opportunities there for marketing your gigs.

  • hey i like your gigs on fiverr post your gigs on gigme5.com there traffic is too good and you will find more opportunities there for marketing your gigs.

  • christ I hate Linux! but thanks for the video anyway!

  • Nice concept, but wouldn't it work better to make a rough mode and use this to enhance it?

  • @netnerd01 If you can make a rough model in blender you don't need mesh capture, but this has some interesting uses for people who are not so artistically inclined. If the subject is symmetrical you can also take the best side and mirror it to make a better-looking model...

  • You sir are a Mad Genius. Thank you.

  • Very nice! I've used Voodoo a little before, but i didnt think of anything like this. Good thing someone is thinking of new cool ways to do things!

    xD

  • Wow that's a really creative way to use voodoo and blender!

    Never thought of it!

  • @LanteanKnight Have you used Voodoo much? I'm using windows, not sure how to make this all work.

  • nice idea.. poor efect :P

  • @razieraziel You can change "limit number of vertices to 1500 to some larger number. We just wanted to save time. Apparently, Digilab has better tracking software available for a price. And of course we could improve the effect ourselves, at the risk of becoming more professional and not being able to do this for fun / free...

  • @themanyone ahh.. I see, thanks for reply ;)

  • This is brilliant! Thanks for sharing Henry!

  • hey guys. i know this is unrelated but i am having a lot of trouble. i have a master chief animation where he moves around and shoots. ever time i move him, i have to move the gun on its own. does anyone know how to make the gun stay in his hand when i move it?

  • @flotch93 Parent the gun to the hand and it will follow its movements. This can be done in a script to pick up / drop items, I think.

  • What's the name of the video software you used to break it up into individual frames? You mention it in the video, but It's hard to hear, and I can't see where it's listed in the video description.

  • @HankMeyer ImageMagic or GraphicsMagick should do the trick.

  • @themanyone Virtualdub can also do the conversion to images

  • Comment removed

  • Also, latest changes make converting the pictures formats a thing of the past! I may make a video of something I model.

  • You should make a video of making the best possible model! I would like to see how complex and detailed it can get :D

  • I don't see why you wouldn't just use syntheyes... It's actually made for that sort of thing (well, it has functions for that kind of thing).

  • @TheFXGuy syntheyes costs $ and the demo version can not save or export. We are exploring things we can do on a zero budget here.

  • If you like this, I recommend to you ProFORMA. Pan presents a far more robust, real-time method.

  • Freaks

  • interesting, but the precision is very limited., but interesting way to start a mesh with retopoligize stuff.

  • Very Old

  • What is that text program?

  • Could have used a few subdivisions, I think. Wouldn't that make the sphere a bit more accurate in filling out the vertices?

  • Awesome proof of concept! You could just do a 360 video and scan anything! two things though... it would be good to add more points to the point cloud and if need to get frames from a video you can also use ffmpeg. it's alot simpler if you know what your doing.

  • noob lol kick

  • I'd say, way to much work for such a crappy result.

  • When I run my python script in Blender it says there is an error with the for importing mathutils. I have fallowed all his steps and my points still never all come out. Please help :)! Thank you ^^!

  • I have never seen anyone do this with Voodoo. Great Vid!

  • @Trigwizard03 voodoo isnt bad but it is worth paying for something like syntheye

  • @supertigerfans

    You can with blender

  • I fallowed all your steps, but when I pressed alt + P in Blender to run the script I only get a few dots. My object that I filmed did not come out in dots like your. Should I wait longer to see if it loads or is something wrong? This tutorial is amazing. I have watched it many times. Can you or anyone else please help me? Thank you.

  • Anybody? Check my previos post.

  • What videoediting software is that?

  • avidemux

  • @Dilophodd idk but i do belive (but not sure) that you can just load the video into voodoo and get the same resaults

  • Is there any other way of converting the 3d points into an 3d mesh? Oh great one.

  • Response to : supertigerfans Pretty much any video program will convert your video to images. My favorite is Quicktime (Pro version), because there's a lot less info lost in the transfer from video.

  • NICE MAN!

  • That is very creative. Thank you for showing me that. I learned a lot. Would this also work if I wanted to make a space ship or car? How about a transforming motion? Thank you so much. 5 stars and faved :)!

  • Question if you know - can Voodoo be used for motion capture (for animation purposes) or for tracking a moving object and then attaching a mesh to it?

  • Probably not, but it is useful for telling about where an object is and its general outline.

  • @vaasnaad try using after effects ;)

  • LOL... well I'm hoping to avoid it if at all possible, even though I have it. It's a penguin thing. lol

So does AfterEffects do mocap/tracking in that manner? I haven't seen tutorials on it but haven't been looking that hard outside Blender.

  • Dunno wat u saying lol but ok

  • @vaasnaad actually yes that is what it was designed for

if voodoo captures camera movements and the "outline of things"

then when you export it to blender a new camera is also exported this camera is animated to what voodoo tracked

so go into blender and look at your time line while viewing your camera it will match the videos movements exactly

there are other videos on you tube on how to do it

  • thats really cool dude. so how would you make a high poly model?

  • Mirror, subdivide, smooth and sculpt--or start with a better HD video/image sequence. I think it's better to create your own, but this serves as a good sketch. It gets the major points mapped out in a hurry.

  • oh ok thanks, so can you help me with my other problem below?

  • That usually happens when you select tripod instead of camera motion tracking. The software isn't very easy to use even for what it was intended, let alone what we're doing with it.

  • great thanks man keep up the good work

  • bah ok i switched it to free hand and now all im getting is a bunch of points that spread out in lines in 3 directions and is really dense at the center...no face image

  • @themanyone

do you mind if I use this technique in a tutorial, I will take it further, like going into topology

  • @rollokb2 Of course you can. I do not hold a patent on the technique.

  • and ok i tried all of this and for some reason i keep getting a basically flat image of vertexes that is more of an outine of the side of my head instead of the front of my face...and like i said its barely 3d...i made my vid a pan of the front of my face to the side like you did...so im really confused why its not working

  • Nice instructional! Thanks!

  • Thanks! These are awesome! :D

    (Linux FTW)

  • full points for doing it on Linux .. !!!

  • hehe :)

  • I try to make these more entertaining!

  • dont vorry :) it was interesting/entertaining plus a good idea
