  • bluegrasssingingman, i hate to break it to you but its not like Noam cant play bluegrass banjo. He just chooses to be progressive, and thank God, because thats how music grows and changes so we dont hear the same stuff over and over. Its people like Noam who make music better, and he can do more on the banjo then most people can dream. I love this video and Noam rocks it.

  • Love the banjo picking great strong melody and virtuosity in his playing!! <3

  • Banjo sucks, Chromatic sucks

  • Noam fuckin takes over at 0:38, amazing song all around

  • Wow, again.

  • check out Noam Pikelny on funnyordie, so funny!!!

  • Anyone that 'disliked' this obviously was jealous - best piece of banjo and guitar picking ever....

  • @Tonykite1979 How can you make this claim? That banjo picker is lazy, when compared to bluegrass banjo pickers. Chromatic style is garbage. I have never yet heard chromatic sound like the song. It is just a bunch of notes. That has nothing to do with the songs melody.

  • @bluegrasssingingman He isn't even completing his rolls. That is a five string banjo. He isn't competing his rolls so for, hes not using his 5th string. Like your suppose to. He is picking all single notes, and no roll. You don't cut your rolls off. Like he is doing.

  • @bluegrasssingingman completing

  • lol did anyone else hear the slip in there?

  • that was guitarded

  • Nice work boys. Bela Fleck inspired banjo picking and great clean guitar work.

  • Does anyone else hear what sounds like the camera man in the background saying "yeah" a couple of times during some of the awesome parts?

  • some of the nicest pikin iv'e heard 5 stars

  • I think it's really cool that even though these guys are pro musicians, they can still just chill on their porch and play. It's fantastic :D

  • i play banjo and guitar and im good but these guys just are brilliant

  • DANG!!!

  • Comment removed

  • Well, technically they are three guys sitting on a porch, albeit fantastic pickers... could use a little more grinnin' though. We like a bit of grinnin' with our pickin' out here in the bluffs of the Mississippi!!

  • I am really getting a kick out of the clueless people who think these are just "3 people sittin on a porch uh pickin"! They are ALL literally world renowned musicians, at the risk of sounding smug, get a clue people.

Type "pickles" into google you wont get a green hamburger condiment, just know that lol

  • GREAT JOB....

    JAMES COATES

    WAGON TRAXX BLUEGRASS GOSPEL HOUR

  • Amazing... in the best possible way.

  • These kids are just sitting around on the porch playing some great ass music better than lots of pros and down in the hills people can just do this stuff. heh heh Thats just another reason I am glad to be from down yonder.. I can do it too..Great job guys

  • @MrLongtimegone I mean--these guys ARE pros.

  • @MrLongtimegone

Apparently you didn't notice that Noam Pikelny was on the Late Show with Steve Martin. These guys are not just kids sittin on a porch somewhere. They ARE pros. lol. :)

  • @rhssaxplayer i bet Jens Kruger is better..not that Noam Pikelny isn`t excellent..but..

  • @MrLongtimegone they are pros bud

  • YE:0H

  • take noam's second break and put it into a hall of fame somewhere

  • Take Noam's second break and put it in some hall of fame somewhere.

  • Good stuff dudes.Love the banjo diddies

  • arguably THE best picking video on YT. Hands down,

  • @devno9904

i agree that its a great video with some incredible musicianship, but im a bit foggy as to how it can be the best video both arguably AND hands down :)

  • @chopsie01 Thats how how great it is,totally defies all logic! LOL;)

  • @devno9904 not even close...Johnson mountain boys Newton grove thats the best its good for bluegrass period!

  • @devno9904 absolutely...i've been saying the same thing about andy falco's cherokee shuffle ever since hearing...pure brilliance!

  • Noam sure pulls some fantastic tone out of that RB7 !

  • well done as usual boys!

  • sound real good

  • you guys have an awesomely clean sound. great job, and just the right amount of complexity to showcase the talent, yet still bring out the foundation melody.

  • Yeah noam plays with chris thile and andy plays with the infamous stringdusters

  • Crazy good

  • that banjo player sounds unreal.... damn fine job boys!

  • banjo guy looks like he has no hand lol

  • ***** 8^)

  • Thanks for your time in Schenectady Tony. Best of luck in Boston.

  • excellent guys.. thank you

  • I could listen to these guys till the cows come home.

  • great job fellows, check out my grandsons version at memaheff, thanks mike sr.

  • Watching this video for the umpteenth time, I realize that it's not only a terrific version of a fine tune but also a great example of how three virtuosos play together, each in turn showcasing the other(s)...Note how the banjo player plays softly when the guitarists are playing...how Andy Falco (in cap) turns gently toward the other guitar player when his turn comes to be featured...Just the right "mix." A truly outstanding performance by seasoned pros!

  • @geohabe Perfect analysis of this great, great performance. They should start a band...LOLOL

  • you 3 should post more of these on here!

  • nicely done.can't stop listening to this tune

  • VERY well done one this tough little tune to execute.

  • A real pleasure to listen to such outstanding picking! (I'm a banjo fan, myself, but have to give the highest rating to the guitar player with the cap...This is world-class stuff!)

    Geo, Long Island, NY

  • Nicely done! 5 stars!

  • wowowowo!!! great playing!! 5*****

  • Guardo questo video almeno una volta al giorno. Siete grandiosi. Un saluto dall'Italia.

Watch this video at least once a day. You are great. Greetings from Italy.

  • Amazing playing folks!!!!

  • Nice!:D

  • old-time > bluegrass

  • One of my all time favorite videos. These guys just smoke!

  • great video! possibly any banjo tab? i love the fancy licks

  • Great talent!

Thank you and greetings from Ireland.

  • very nice!!

  • Wow this is awesome...all three were great.

  • i hate bluegrass my dad's played it my whole life....but this is pretty sick to tell the truth

  • Bluegrass is true Americana.

  • I saw Falco at Wintergrass this year and he was pulling off solid, extended, complicated breaks. I was impressed. Thanks Andy! Noam was also there, and, as usual, was choosing all the right notes.

  • Oh so good. I am a HUGE GIANT CRAZY FAN of The Be Good Tanya's.... so this is just great to hear. subscribing.

  • Excellent playing.... seriously!!

What do a banjo with volume control and the abominable snowman have in common?

    ................They don't exist.

Honestly, I enjoyed the playing but would have liked to hear a little separation in the instrumentation.

  • Didnt mean to spam you. I hit the wrong butten. But anyway. If you listen about 500 times (as I have) the instruments start to separate.

  • how effortless does that look!?

if you want to learn more guita techniques, check out spytunes

  • thank you for sharing that... beautiful

  • Nice!

  • Just Plain Beautiful... You Guys Make It Look Easy.

  • Why is it so hard to find other Tony Watt stuff on youtube?

  • wow thats good stuff. :)

  • I agree with "pgmrti" why doesn't the banjo, the loudest instrument....BACK OFF.... when the guitar the SOFTEST instrument is playing? I've seen Tony Watt play many times at Boston's Can_Tab Lounge and he's an awesome guitarist!

  • A gentleman is a guy who brings a banjo and doesn't play it. (This is apparently a joke on Saltspring)

At least he does a nice of playing it as does the guitar player.

  • He dosn't back off because he is the only musician there.

    Banjo = god of instruments.

  • He needs a plexiglass separator like they do with drums. Seems like after his first break he might have been still sort of wound up and forgot to back off :P Great playing by all in any case.

  • Mayb the reason u cant hear the guy on the lefts solo as wel is he needs 2 get a guitar w more volume Bryan sutton has a guitar he calls "the banjo killer" lol an he specifically uses it 4 jam sessions so he can b heard just a thought great video!!!!

  • Listen a few hundred times and the instruments kind of pop out at you.

  • happy music great''

    beatiful song.. love bluegrass...

    wonderful america!

  • felice anno a voi ciao a tutti!!!!!!!

  • felice 2008 a tutti!!!!

  • great music

  • Why does a banjo roll thru a guitar part ? The interference is terrible. Then when the banjo 'vamps' later it sounds good. Get off the rolls when other instruments take lead

  • Vamping is only one of the many ways a banjo can back up a guitar. Noam is notably backing off when Andy and Tony break, and uses a very different style then...he stays away from any real melody notes, and, in doing so, does not interfere with the flatpicking. His rolling backup keeps the "drive" going, fills holes, and provides a sense of rhythm. If there was a good condenser mic sitting in the middle of that circle, you would hear a very different sound, probably less distorted.

  • just to add to your point, I know Tony loves to have the banjo stay on a roll through other solos for just the reasons you mention. It's one of the defining characteristics of a modern bluegrass sound. (I used to play in a band with Tony, and we've had endless discussions on this topic)

  • that's what I'm talkin' about, gtuckerkellog. Listening to old recordings of first generation 'grassers will reveal spots in the tune where the banjo drops right out. Nowadays, it drives right through, but with a sense of dynamic such that it does not overpower the others. You can hear Noam's tone and presence change throughout the tune. The bottom line, however, is that there are only about 2 other pickers in the galaxy who can criticize anything Noam does!

  • ok bela fleck is one of the pickers rite?? who else can criticize Noam??

  • yeah, bela and trischka ( and pretty soon pandolfi)

  • pandolfi? who's that?

  • Chris Pandolfi, currently with the infamous stringdusters. Check him out.

  • don't forget Matt Menefee of the Cadillac Sky

  • Ya matt is awesome i love him!!

  • Dude is this the nasty J that I know? This is Adam

  • Yep its me i didnt even recognize ur name lol awesome vid isnt it??

  • Yeah makes me want to practice even more.

  • yeah that too.

  • Hey go into my youtube profile and look at my favorites. I have some videos from a guy named banjoben. He has some awesome instruction videos for the banjo and guitar and even the mando. I also found out he is Taylor Swifts banjo player. He is awesome.

  • Ya i kno him hes been 2 my house lol my dad taught his sisters in high skool an they play 2 so they all came over 1 time an we jammed

  • You know him. Thats cool. Man he has even played at the Grand ol Opry. So what does your dad play?

  • Oh my dad dont play anythin lol he taught them highskool science

  • don't forget Matt Menefee

  • Maybe it's called a duet.

  • Check out when Noam retunes at 3:26. Oh to be a fly on the wall of that porch....

  • can't wait to see what andy falco ends up becoming and tony and noam, these guys are awesome

  • Yep, this is good, like I expect from Andy and the rest!

  • Whew. Thanks for this. Its a real motivator.

  • This is the future of bluegrass and it's lookin' pretty dern good.

  • Bonjour,
