  • asif anyone disliked this song...mental!!

  • amazing when this is played in act 3 of jerusalem

  • Why on Earth are Tears going down my face. Could it be that I

identify with this "sad", true to life song......

  • very interesting video thanks

  • ღ♪(((¯`♥Beauty♥♫(♥♪(♥♫d)))`♥‿♥´(((b♫♥)♪♥)♫♥Full'z♥´¯)))♪ღ

  • R.I.P. Sandy x

  • Just paid $18 on e-bay for the CD that contains this track.Only a few times in my life have I paid that much for a single song (assuming it's the only one on the CD that I'll like).A haunting rendition of a very powerful song.

  • Words sung straight from her heart. What wonderful emotion she puts into every word.

And she had the most beautiful voice I've ever heard.

Sandy, I miss you and the music you would have created if only you'd been given more time.

  • Brilliant song, amazingly interpreted by the writer. A talent taken far too early, it amazes me that it is over 30 years since she died. This, and her other work, is a fitting epitaph

  • This is the best version of all. Thanks so much.

  • Beautiful so much feeling love it 10*

  • Thanks for posting this demo version. Sandy is the ONLY one who can sing this song, in my opinion. If I hear anyone else sing it, even Eva Cassidy, it's just not resonant with me. All the different versions that Sandy had recorded are beautiful - this is purely her song and her spirit that no one else can capture.

  • search nicolas and the iceni summers end. they write beautiful folk which has echoes of denny and drake.

  • I suppose this is THE earliest version of her most famous composition. Heartbreaking to think of how her life evolved into self-destructon. Reading of it makes this song all the more sad instead of beautiful and wistful. We miss Ms D more as time passes. Thanx 4 this intimate piece of her soul!

  • @909chuck : 'Self destruction ' is a bit of an overstatement, she died of a brain tumour, which just may have influenced her well documented alcohol and drug problems.

  • @thepeteroz Wikipedia gives a different account of her demise.Of course Wikipedia isn't infallible.I think that only the coroner involved can say for sure but people, even talented people, can fall into alcoholism...a condition that all-too-often ends very badly.

  • you really have to check Dez Mona, they covered this song, and it's even better than the original...

  • OMG...........still can't believe I didn't know of this "beautiful singer".

    What Happened to Her

    How Did She Die??

  • @desert3347 Sandy Denny fell to her death whilst descending a flight of stone steps in her home. A tragic loss felt to this day.

  • @Spacetwerp So Sad Indeed...........

  • @desert3347 check it up on wikipedia. she had a fall with fatal outcome, but it was complicated by drug and alcohol issues. a great tragedy for a great artist too rich and famous too young to handle it all....

  • Chilling and beautiful. Her life ended so badly, but there is so much beauty in her singing and in this timeless song. Thanks for the posting, and the photos.

  • too sweet. heaven's choir indeed.

  • PS: This song reminds me of "Urge for Going", a lovely song too. Not sure if Tom Rush or Joni Mitchell wrote it...

  • @rocktenniscat

Not Tom or Joni, this classic was written by Sandy herself. Remembering Sandy today as well, Saw her solo in 1973 opening for Loggins & Messina, and on Her wedding anniversary at the Beacon Theater when she was back with Fairport. What a beautiful voice. Missing her still...

  • @nathanfrodo11 - Sorry, I wasn't too clear...I knew about Sandy writing this, but always wondered who wrote "Urge for Going" I love both songs Sooo much.

  • @rocktenniscat Joni Mitchell wrote 'Urge for Going'

  • Remembering Sandy today: Jan. 6, 1947 – April 21, 1978. This is my favourite posting of Sandy on Youtube. So uncluttered, "unproduced" what a voice.

  • search nicolas and the iceni summer's end. they write beautiful songs which have echoes of sandy denny.

  • I'm sure that Sandy sits high up there, in the clouds, even above the rain. She was folk beauty itself. Sometimes I detect her voice in a summer breeze, and as I walk it is as though she is walking with me. Perhaps that is testimony to a beautiful spirit that showered us with the creative wonder of one of the greatest female voices we ever heard. It seems so long ago now. God bless you Sandy.

I still have the original vynyl albums my love. Will never forget your empowerment. xx

    ever

  • Utterly magnificent in every way. What a wonderful talent. Poor, sad little lady.....

  • tremendous.i`m getting into this material for real now.

  • I didn't get to know you until after you died - Sorry I didn't say goodbye

  • That sounds a lot like Nick Drake, the guitar anyway.

  • @aroryboreallen Yes, there is a real similarity in spirit between the two of them, in some songs. This does bring him to mind strongly.

  • Sandy Denny has been my absolute favourite since who knows when...she still is..I will never forget her ever...miss you...but your music lives on Sandy it has made you immortal really...a beautiful lady who made beautiful music...

  • Sandy Denny reached genius with this song. All you need is one immortal tune. She did it.

  • This version of Who Knows Where the Time Goes is so raw and real. I sang this song to my mother at my own wedding recently. She died shortly afterward. I sing it to her now at the gravesite. It's timeless. This time thing. Who really knows where the time goes? We waste time, we make the most of the time, we take the time, we cherish the time, we spend the time. But we long and beg for it back when a loved one is gone, wanting always more time together. It's the way it is when you love.

  • @dianafailla, beautiful song enhanced by your remarkably poigniant words.

  • @dianafailla Thanks for your comment. Bless you.

  • @dianafailla Thanks for that moving tribute to Sandy Denny and your mother. My mother - a great Fairport fan - died not so long ago, and I also love the song.

  • @dianafailla A truly raw reading... but when you Love...well you live, and hopefully others see what living is...David is my friend who passed away 19years ago he was 37...I STILL sing to him at His graveside today with the scarecrows in the field opposite, we used to share our problems... being married, etc.etc.etc. then He was gone, now his wife is with someone else & does not talk to me anymore & if She did I would be torn....loads of love.

  • It couldn't but work, even with pictures of every thing else but Sandy, this sound can hold its own any time.

  • You can divide people in two groups. One group that likes cats.........the other who does'nt.Sandy was in the former and I like her music too

  • Who is playing guitar on this? Sandy? Richard Thompson? Someone else. The voice is stunning. It is arbitrary who is famous and who not. "Your fickle friends are leaving..."

  • @MickeyYahoo I'm not 100% certain but am pretty sure it's Sandy herself as she was known for amazing time signatures and tuning set ups especially in these early days

  • @prl1973

i'm inclined to agree that it is Sandy herself.

  • @MickeyYahoo : I have a version of this song by the Strawbs in 1967 (All Our Own Work) - very simple recording done in Amsterdam while Strawbs played there - guitarist would be Dave Cousins?

  • Two songs send shivers down my spine. Sandy with Fairport singing this song, Kathy Mattea singing "Where've you been?". Now this demo version of "Who knows were time goes" makes a third. Fantastic. Thank you

  • If you like this song, you might also like Joni Mitchell's "Urge for Going" Something very poignant about these 2 songs.....

  • beautiful beyond words eliciting whispered memories

  • @dottywang. I have to disagree with you. Kate Rusby's recording lacks the warmth that Sandy Denny's home demo has. . What could be simpler than that? Miss Rusby's voice is a little to cute and contrived.

  • I love this song and Sandy Denny's voice. Thank you for posting it.

  • Simply beautiful, touching......

  • @DirkjeA Sandy was always one of my favourite vocalists, especially with The Strawbs.

  • simply beutiffull timeless class streight from heaven

  • she is cute. but boring music.

  • @Israe5l You poor tasteless wanker.

  • Where did you get this track? Is it downloadable somewhere (iTunes)? It's FANTASTIC

  • @katsbah It originally surfaced on an unofficial release called "Borrowed Thyme" but was also included in last year's "Sandy Denny" 19 disc (!) boxed set. That seems to have sold out now in its original Limited Edition packaging but I'm hoping they'll make all the rarities and demos from the set available for download soon.

Sandy recorded her song with The Strawbs on "All Our Own Work" and with Fairport Convention on "Unhalfbricking" - check out the compilation "No More Sad Refrains"

  • Yes, wonderful singer. The Fairport Who knows is too slow, dragged out; this is far too hasty, almost perfunctory. Kate Rusby does it very well in her simple style.

  • @DottyWang

this is the best version, infinately better than mediocre Rusby...

  • This is incredible for a home demo. Its so good its really touching.

  • Superb version of a fabulous song.

  • Wow! Just heard this for the first time today by chance...beautiful voice.....love it.....

  • This is one of my all time favourite songs. I haven't heard it in decades and it takes me back to the 70s when I was at uni and Fairport Convention and Steeleye Span were so popular on the campus. Her voice is so full of feeling and I am now olso reminded of Joni Mitchel in Denny's wonderful use of open tunings and very unusual chords. Wonder who was influenced by whom. Listened to her play the piano and it so reminded me of Joni Mitchel too.

  • Yes, thank you for uploading this absolute gem of a recording x

  • Comment removed

  • wow!! What a beautiful tribute to this talented woman who gave us SO MUCH music in her short years..... thank you so much, whoever created this. And how special to hear her "home demo" of this touching song. Bravo!!!

  • Its that time of year again. Who knows where the time goes?

  • OK, don't laugh... but there's a character in Anne McCaffrey's Dagonriders of Pern books called Menolly, who is a Harper (teachers/musicians/etc for those unfamiliar.). In my head, Menolly sounds like Sandy Denny. There you go.

  • Makes the shivers run down my spine evry time I hear her sweet voice...most specially this song

  • For you heather , happy birthday, were has the time gone !

  • Dear Sandy, you must be one of Heaven's most beautiful angels.

  • Love this song! Thank you for uploading it for everyone.

  • petelambert - thank you for the info!

  • Look at John Malkovich's IMDB page. This is his favorite song.

  • can anyone advise where this version is available for purchase (what album/collection it is on)?

  • @bbhd12 It was originally on the unofficial demo collection CD "Borrowed Thyme", which is now out of print but copies crop up on ebay from time to time (there's one there now). A collossal 19CD Sandy Denny boxed set is due for release this autumn which features 2 demo versions of Who Knows... presumably this is one of them - see wwwDOTsandydennyDOTorgDOTuk for details. pete

  • so lovely.....................

  • SANDY, NICK DRAKE, DAVEY GRAHAM: 3 Legendary British artists who have had so much influence on other artists from All parts of the Globe ! Davey died last year

and his 'disappearance' from the British music scene for decades was a sad loss in itself ! RIP All.

  • So nice,so good, so pretty, so beutiful, so missed....

  • you will always be remembered as one of the greatest voices in song. we miss you

  • I never heard of Sandy until today when it was sent to me as a share and I must admit she was very talented. I would put her in the folk genre and it's a shame she died so young she had a sweet voice and one awesome story teller, Thanks for posting it on YT!!!

  • It's official. 12 people have no souls. Poor dears!

  • What a beautiful voice. So sad she is gone too young.

  • love you from 12 years old all the best 51 now!

  • This just makes me cry, every time....I remember it when it first came out....and I cried then! Now, at this time, it is so much more appropriate! just beautiful!

  • Wow how any idiot could give this song+your lovely vid the thumbs down...yep just proves there's alot of idiots here on YT for sure....Sandy had been my fav female singer since I was 14,wow nearly 30 yrs

...I understand the words of this song more than any other..."sad deserted shore, your fickle friends are leaving"..those words are etched in my heart sadly.. thanks once again...this reminds me of the love of my life my 1st boyfriend Yan...lolol..xxxx

  • thank you for posting this. music for souls in need of a hand up.

  • What this song is about?

There are in here a time thing, a sensation of being lost, it is all?

  • Sandy is up there singing and is still here with us.

  • Beautiful. Brings tears to my eyes every time. Sandy's talent is sadly missed each and every day.

  • Led Zeppelin brought me here.

  • Oh my god, so sad and beautiful, not heard this for a few months.

  • she was so phenomenal , gone too soon .what a loss to all of us.we all miss her so much!

  • I spent a week with you Trevor, Swarb and the guys in NZ in 1973, you encouraged me to return to the music industry in London and it changed my life. Thanks for your warmth and your smile . This track is SO you and how lucky we all are to have shared of your talent............................

  • This just kills me every time... I almost can't bear to listen to it.

  • I fell in love with her voice when I was 15, now I'm 55 and hearing her voice brings me back to those beautifull years in the early seventies.. Sandy...your voice still rules my heart and soul.

  • I am listening to this again - having previously commented on this track - with tears streaming down my 50+ year old cheeks......................................... who indeed knows where the time goes!!!!

  • Wonderful voice,beautiful guitar,great vibe,lovely song.

    Thanks for uploading this gem.

    Cheers

  • Does anyone know how these bootlegs came about? These demo recordings were never broadcast and never released officially. They were private recordings made in her home!

  • It's time someone got that Borrowed Thyme bootleg album, and the other bootlegs with demos on and got an official album out.

  • Beautiful!! Simply Beautiful!!!

  • Heartbreaking, each time I hear this most beautiful voice. She died far too young

  • genialna, tragiczna, nieodżałowana, wyjątkowa ......... Sandy i pieśń która na zawsze pozostaje w pamięci swym pięknym i nieprzemijającym przekazem

  • This is a fabulous version of her song...I wonder if this is in the boxed set??? Fledg'ling should know about this...serious. I miss Sandy's music so much and her voice as well as lyrics. To Georgia with Love.

  • Wow---was looking for Judy Collins's version of this (leave it to WEA a.k.a. WMG [The Stasi of YouTube] to nuke) and stumbled on this, instead; in this case, I'm *GLAD* that "Big Brother's" pecunious ways have led me here! *Beautiful* post; *great sound upload* and the slideshow is perfect! Sandy Denny, regrettably, is easily forgotten: *Thank you* for reminding me of her.

  • @Mavarla You did well. Judy murders it!

  • @24066525: I wouldn't say that Judy Collins "murders" it, ever, but this original Sandy Denny DEMO version is just *priceless*. :-D

  • I can't believe it is nearly 32 to years since this beautiful lady died - breaks my heart to listen to this track just simply perfect in every way - the voice ........

  • @quaich14 She was easily one of the finest singers, and obviously a major influence--even Morrissey is a fan I believe. Certainly Kate Bush must have listened to her as well. What talent Sandy had!

  • This is just magical.................

  • Very moving.

  • The guitar's just a tad too loud but otherwise great, well is anything Sandy did anything than less than so?

  • Remembering lovely Sandy today -

    January 6th, 1947 April 21st, 1978. A wonderful addition to heaven's choir - you are missed Sandy

  • @rocktenniscat yea this song makes me tear up...it's so sad and yet so beautiful

  • Some beautiful pictures there. Thank you.

  • This is my favorite version of the song, for sure. I have Borrowed Thyme and some of the unreleased works are incredible. What other artists have the Jimmy Page-esque guitar tunings such as this?

  • What more can you say besides , "Simply The Best"

  • This is just killing me, it's so beautiful. Richard Thompson was still dedicating albums to Sandy years after her untimely death. (ie: Mock Tudor) I am so thankful to FM radio in the late 60's early 70's for playing the likes of Sandy, Fairport, The Strawbs, Steeleye Span etc.

  • What year was this? Was she listening to Joni, or vice versa??

  • Joni's 1st album was in 1968. This song was written earlier than that. I think Sandy's 1st recording were about 1966 and this song appeared on a Strawbs/Denny album recorded before she joined Fairport. It's very unlikely that this early version would have been heard by Joni.

  • One of 'favouritest' songs ever. And absolutely my favourite lady singer. Wonderful.

  • thanks for this, <3

  • Sensational voice.

RIP Sandy and thank you for the memories

  • thank you! Very beautiful.

  • This was great - I have Denny's complete box set of lp's, and most of Fairport Convention's catalog as well..

Great stuff - thanks for posting this!

    ..the Jman..

  • The biggest cover of this was Judy Collins, featured in the movie "The Subject Was Roses", a Pulitzer winning play..

  • perhaps one of the most beautiful songs ever!

  • This is a demo, no words i can add, well one........

    Beautiful

  • Very Good! Thank You! x x

  • Love this!!!

  • great song , great woman .. great memories .. thanks to poster ..bravo .

  • Thanks for sharing this great version..

  • I love to see Sandy like this. Before the hootch got to her.

  • what do you mean by hootch??

  • An American slang term for booze. Eskimo origin (I think). As in 'hootchie cootchie'. ( the meaning of cootchie is something else entirely).

  • Oh, I see...I didn't know that, then again I know very little slang if any, I'm a prude hahah...

    Peace

  • The Hoochinoo were an Alaskan tribe who made their own alcohol.

  • Does anyone know if there was ever any direct contact between Sandy Denny and Nick Drake.. he certainly walked in the same circles as FC but not sure if he had anything to do with Sandy ?

    Richard

  • Have you heard John Martyn or Eva Cassidy.? Think you woul lik them. Eva Cassidy sounds like Sandy and also died young, eiry when you hear their voices!

  • Nick toured (briefly) with Sandy's band Fotheringay in 1970. In his autobiography producer Joe Boyd says that "Sandy and Nick regarded each other with respect but from a distance. Sandy couldn't relate to Nick, and Nick was as reticent towards her as he was towards most people".

  • @spitzbergen100: They both worked alongside engineer (producer) John Wood (and in his studio), whom I've had the privilege to work with, and as far as I know, they've met but had nothing to do with one another. I'll make sure to ask him more specifically when I'll see him next time.

  • So beautiful...back when music wasn't afraid to show its heart.

Thank you, so much, for posting this...I miss her beautiful voice, so much.

  • Beautiful! 5 stars!

  • Beautiful rendition - Is this available commercially ?

  • yes

  • I am so sorry she died so young. This kind of singing touches my heart.

  • if you love her, you would also love another voice that died so young, Eve Cassidy!!

  • thanks for the suggestion, I will definately check her out!

  • Yes i think you will love eva cassidy. - enjoy elizabeth!

  • Such a great voice!

    So pure, so sad!

Why did you died so young?

Who dies young belongs to God!

  • What a rare find.Well done and many thanks.

  • Såsåsåsåsåsåså smukt!

  • Trist du skulle dø Sandy.

Du har ændret hele verden. Ikke meget, men lidt (:

  • What a smashing montage and tribute to an amazing singer. She is ever one of my favourites, and an irretrievable loss to the world of music ... nay ... the world!

  • wow how beautiful was that! amazing

  • My all time favorite singer, in fact I named my daughter after her :-)

A great version of the classic, thanks for posting it.

  • awe - this is just precious. Thank you for posting it. So simple and honest - demos are the best - they are the essence of the artist - i think. Thank you again for this. Lovely captivating moment in time.

  • Comment removed

  • Thanks for adding the lyrics.

  • Never heard this original version - thank you so much

  • Legendary folk singer, the like of which we will seldom see.

  • Thank you so much for posting this. It is hard to believe that it is "only a demo"!! What a lovely voice she had. Sorry I missed Fairport this year, I didn't realise they were still performing...

    Thanks again!

  • "[...]to date she remains the only guest vocalist on a Led Zeppelin album."(wikipedia)

  • Yeah people think it's Jonesey on backing vocals in the Battle of Evermore. It is actually Sandy. (I'm sure this has been said before)

  • who knows where the time goes?, where has the time gone?. 40 years have gone in the blink of an eye?, it just seems like yesterday. THE MUSIC STILL SOUNDS GREAT

  • fantastic .... this is a classic ... woman , song , gui-tar ... et all . thanks for posting .... regards from Bonnie Scotland .

  • Beautiful!!! Thank you!!!
