After watching a long, slow, boring movie all the way through, there should be a prize at the end; some reward for enduring countless irrelevant scenes in hopes of finding a plot point. But there is nothing. No surprise, no twist, no poignant speech or release of the slight bit of tension that slowly develops. If it weren't for the great acting I would demand my money back.

I agree with RickyFitz. In my opinion it's merely a speciman for how NOT to make a movie. You can sneak into the director's mind what i intented to to but it failed completely. The story creeps forward sooooo sloooowly and one gets the impression they didn't know how to fill the movie at least to the scene where the son was shooted. DOn't want to hate around but this movie did not touch me for a second. Really, I guess Todd Field chose the wrong job, sorry.

I'm actually surprised to read so many positive comments here! I watched this movie with a friend and we stopped after the half because we both agreed that it was the worst movie ever made. No tension at all, poor, empty dialogues and a clumsy, expectable storyline. So I was curious about other people's opinion here at youtube. But well, interesting to see how different human perception is...

I could never put my finger on it, but something about this movie was just incredible.  The general storyline has been done many times before. I give it up to the direction. I became a Todd Field fan for life.

I remember this movie from way back. It's a prime example of how people can find much needed emotional education through film. Don't know the exact ratio, but not everyone has the ability to talk to listening people in times of painful loss.

I went into HMV yesterday I bought this movie, its two hours longs, which I didn't mind, and oh my gosh!! Was one of the best movies ever!!! Its no wonder it won FIVE academy awadrs, Sissy Spacek was sensational in this and Marisa Tomei was amazing, her best movie, I've never been so glued to a movie, its not scary as some people think it is, I'd rate it 5stars or 10/10 HIGHLY recommend it to anyone! :D

I agree with you completely. Once I'd finished the film, I had to go back to that scene to experience it again. It is absolutely stunning in every single respect! A fabulous movie. I don't always agree with Roger Ebert, but he sure got it right with 'In The Bedroom.'

this film is a specimen of powerful acting by both spacek and wilkinson. i love wilkinson's development of his rationale and thought process throughout the movie and coming to a pivotal point where he feels he must do what he feel is the right thing in his heart. while murder is never acceptable, you really come to appreciate the honesty of human emotion of this movie.
