I luv this movie! I saw it at the drive-in. I joined little league soon after. Are uniforms even looked like the bears. I even wore number 12 just like my favorite character, Tanner Boyle!
My favorite part has got to be when Tanner throws his mitt at the baserunner.... I think every little league player has wanted to do that at some point in a bad inning LOL
Vic Morrow is dead. He died while making the movie The Twilight Zone. Brandon Cruz who played in The Courtship of Eddie's Father on T.V. with Bill Bixby as well as the Yankee pitcher in The Bad News Bears is now a punk rock musician. Bill Bixby has also died.
This is what childhood is all about. It's about kids being kids. The best movie of my childhood. And the Breaking Training movie actually was probably my favorite.
I love this bit of news, the where-are-they-now stuff!!!!
...FINALLY we hear about a kids' tv classic where NO ONE among the cast ended up a criminal, a drug addict, or dead (like on "Diff'rent Strokes" and "Patridge Family" or "Brady Bunch" and the rest!)
From everything Ive read, Chris Barnes has done everything possible to disassociate himself from the Tanner character and to avoid publicity. He also apparently declined offers from ESPN, Sports Illustrated and TV Guide to participate in anything Bears related. The last known news on him was an article back in 98 that claimed he worked in a flower shop in Utah. If you search "Chris Barnes, Beyond Tanner" you can find a website on him with the info.
I liked the character of Tanner Boyle (BTW, that's my last name). However, I don't blame Chris Barnes, the actor who played him, from diassociating himself from the foul-mouthed character who had so many putdowns of people of different races (In other words, what if a kid acted like Archie Bunker). Chris, you did a good job as Tanner.
In 1976, I saw this movie when I snuck in and cut school. I was 9 years old. I remember thinking this is the funniest movie ever and they must of made it just for me. Tanner was AWESOMe!!!! The little bastard.

WE made it to the final game and lost. The whole season the local newspaper called us The Bad News Bears. And we finished the same way. Anyone else have little league teams that were like this? Getting kicked in the nuts by a stupid delinquent boy was bad enough----there's no need to humiliate a grown adult man further you idiot. Too bad I haven't seen the stupid kid around----if I did I'd wring his ears until he cried "Uncle". It was just a lucky shot on his part. I was lucky my testicles weren't ruptured. :(
How did the Bears go to the Astrodome in the 2nd movie when they werent the champs...they got beat by the Yankees in the 1st movie? Just nitpicking*L*
The Yankees were originally invited but were unable to get their team together. Bob Whitewood (Toby's father) argued on the Bears behalf, that they had lost only on a fluke.
the back of the dvd of bad news bears in breaking training says the picture picks up the bears career a year after their infamous second place finish in the north valley league
I remember them good ol' family values of the 50s where we used to keep blacks in their place, keep women in the kitchen, keep gays in the closet, and we walked around with a smiley face praising Jesus and handling our problems with alcohol and beating our kids. Aaah, the good old days!
the message i got from this movie was how adults act when "supporting" thier kids. you saw how matthau and morrow acted in this movie towards the end. it was as if they were playing through the kids. the movie was not about how kids act in real life. it was about how out of control parents get when trying to live thier own dreams through thier kids.
It was in the 70s when children started losing respect for adults. Movies like Bad News Bears exemplified that. "Part of our culture?..."Showed kids as they are, not how they should be?" That was the problem! We've allowed kids to be potty-mouthed, ugly little brats, who eventually grow up to be dumb, rude adults.
Ugh, I guess you're right dylanfan1969 (I didn't really see it that way) but why couldn't this film been made with 'normal' kids (if what you said that 'this movie is not about kids in real life')? What we have here is a rat-pack of 'abnormal' misfits. I don't sympathize with these spoiled, ugly brats at all, despite the adults. The movie would have been better if it used regular kids with regular dreams and weaknesses. Hollywood always likes to show 'how bad and adult-like' kids can be. Sad.
Are you on crack? This movie was about real kids. Kids that had problems. Kids that came from a broken family and parents that didn't have time to hang out with their kids. It also depicts how parents act in organized sports. The film had a message and obviously you did not get the message. Go back to your gated community a-hole.
If a kid talked to me like one of those little brats in this movie, I'd stunt his growth permanently! This is not a movie about 'real kids'. It's about stupid, spoiled, and disrespectful kids. They're abnormal, and if abnormal is supposed to be real and good, forget it. Whatever happened to the good values of the 50's and early 60's?
If you paid attention to the movie, the coach's message related to not only baseball but life. "Do the best you can" The reason the kids respected the coach is because he was more screwed up than any of them. He had faults just as much as they did but the kids respected him because he spoke to them on their level. Stop bashing this movie. It is a classic and made a ton of money. May I suggest you buy the Gilmore Girls DVD collection? I think it's more your speed.
gerryd1955, I'll tell you why I dislike this movie so much: last month some boys (who looked and acted like the stupid kids in the movie)were coming out of a movie theatre that was showing 'BNB' as an old 'family comedy' film. They were mouthing off and acting disrespectful(no doubt emulating the brats in the film), so I rightfully told one boy to 'shut up'. Without warning and without any just cause, the brat kicked me right in the b_ _ _ s. See the correlation, or are you just 'blind'??!
Was this the new movie with Billy Bob or the original? Anyway, if a kid would have kicked me, I would have kicked him in the chest, especially if my wife and kids were with me. It's self defense.
For your info, the brats saw the 1976 original version, ok? I wanted to wash their mouths-- they called me a big 'a-hole' and a big 'f_ gg_t' only because I was a clean cut gentleman. The boy who balled me was only 10 years-old! No, I wouldn't have kicked him, I would've 'killed' him, but I was just too disoriented and in wretched pain (ugh!) to attack the boy. Luckily, my wife and kids did not witness my near impromptu 'castration'.
I'm glad they kicked you in the ballsack MrShinyshoes, too bad they didn't rupture your nuts to prevent you from having any retarded faggot kids who take after you bitch. This movie rules! Serves you right for telling them to shut up when you should have been minding your own fucking business queer.
You're an idiot eze42323. You don't even know how stupid these kids were, so mouthy and disrespectful to adults. And it wasn't "they" who kicked me in the testicles, you moron. It was one scrawny little 10 year-old boy. I could have killed him if I wanted to, but I was too paralyzed by the pain. I really thought i was going to die. The boy kicked me full force and at point blank range, just because I told him to shut up! What a f**ckin' brat.
The boy almost ruptured my testicles you idiot. Just because I told the fucking kid to shut up. When are you going to get it through your thick skull that such boys are no good?! They deserve a whipping.
One very important lesson I learned from this movie...you can't respect someone who kisses your ass. Always stick up for yourself. Thanks Tanner Boyle!! That's probably why I've had 35 jobs in the past 17 years.
Supposedly, he wants to distance himself from the movie and the character that made him famous. He is a near recluse and refuses any comment on the film anymore. Sad attitude, since he gave kids a lot of laughs during the summer of 1976.

From the beginning when Kelly fucks with the new coach, to carmen ronsoni,to playing against the mexicans, the only thing I didnt like was the whole tanner feeling sorry for "the luper"
that kid sucked in the first movie and I liked when he got stuffed in the garbage can.
