Can you replace a new shutter after your camera exceeded it's maximum shutter count? I'm having a fear of my camera's shutter counts keep going up :(.
ok this is a normal thing with the D line, and 20D and 30D most of all, watch this video, and try to do it your self, or pay Canon to do it for you, about $300USD
Good Lord! I sure hope my 20D doesn't do that.....Nikon, Canon, it's all the same. Planned Obsolescence. Digital SLRs are DESIGNED to break unless you buy the top model. I wonder how many shutter actuations on my old Nikon FM2 35mm film camera?? 200K? 300? 400K? That titanium shutter lasts forever. Better get a film for backup.....
technology is great when it works and sucks when it does not. I comes down to how you use and take care of your equipment, normal wear and tear and accidental damage. I'd take it to a camera repair shop if you want to fix it, or bash it on the ground and see if that works! Just kidding!
buy a nikon!!! a d300 or something!! ace cam , built like a tank!!i used to shoot canon and i made the move to nikon a year ago!! never looked back !! better image quality and imo better glass!!!
hey " error 99 " is pretty hard to fix and involves some decent knowledge of the hard ware , it is a risky procedure , so you are better off taking it to a camera shop . Hope I Helped : )
When I called the camera shop, first thing they told me was to remove the battery & lens, & image card for about 20 minutes, then replace with fully-charged battery. One time I got the Err 99 and I cleaned the contacts on my lens and on the camera and it worked again. Just this week i got the Err 99 message again... I need a new shutter...canon 20d shutters have a limited life
you should check your shutter count.. how many years your using that? because camera has shot capacity about 150,000 shots when you go over that then its over..replace it.. thats why photographer invest in lenses not in body
I am sure the 20D has a shutter that should last an average (claimed by Canon) around 100,000 shots. Your 20D has lived well past its recommended life! Get a 50D :P (Pentax shooter)
My camera has a worse problem. Yesterday I coulnd't get it to get over the "EOS" sign when the cf card was in.. Alright. I took it out and shut the little card "door". Now it's working but it wants the card. Ok.. Well, it's like it cant even read the card or fit in there anymore because when i press the little button it almost FLIES out.. It's like a crazy push. And now the camera wont even start, I haven't done anything wrong, it just happened last night and here I am with a dead EOS 300D.
If the CF card flies out, it is probably a bent pin on the cameras CF connector pin array. Inspect it. It may be possible that you can use a flat screwdriver to bend it back into position. Don't use force or you may just brake the pin off.
this "error 99" issue that many Canon users seem to face has prompted me to leave Canon and go else where (I am stuck between Olympus, Sony and Nikon). Wake up people, Canon has a serious quality control issue, no one should ever accept this "error 99".
Ive been using canon for years, Im not married with the system just saying I'd used it a lot, the only time I have the error 99 was when the shutter was done, after 20,000 pics, but canon replaced it, so try to do the same with a lens attached or if not send it to canon the bad news is that would cost you at least 200 dls, good luck!
Google "error 99 canon 20d" and click on the second thing to come up. They have a solution there. I cant post the ink on youtube for some reason though
The shutter looks like its fine, its firing, right? So its prolly a software issue - or something else- for instance, you note that the shutter does nothing, well, try putting a battery grip on it, maybe some piece of fluff or software confusion is making it think that the battery grip trigger is depressed (even though it isnt there)
Like, sometimes when I play counterstrike, or other games, my PC gets confused and thinks I'm pressing forward, or sideways, even though I'm not.
how can you replace the software if the camera goes berserk soon as you turn it on? I have this issue and it seems like theres nothing i can do about getting to the menu
Use an eraser on the copper contacts on the lens and the body. That will work a few times, but eventually, you will need to send it in to have the shutter replaced. I have performed about 600,000 shutter rotations on each of my Canon 20D's. I usually need to send it in to Canon to have the shutter mechanism replaced every 150,000 rotations.
If anyone wants to sell their Canon 20D contact me.
150k is an impressive amount. Judging by the responses, you are fully aware of why this is happening. I suppose the only thing you can do without paying more is just as one of the other posters said - bang it hard and hope the shutter magically fixes itself. I have a 20D myself and I'm getting to the 10k mark. I hope mine hits 150k like yours.
try to re-install or update the firmware. search "Canon EOS 400D Firmware update" here on youtube and copy the link for installing the update on the 20D. hope this helps.
SAME exact thing happened to me a few days ago with my 20D! Arg. The shutter is blown and doesn't matter what batteries or lenses are switched, it won't work again. Just sent mine into Canon in New Jersey for repairs. Luckily mine was under a year old but I'm not sure what the shutter actuations limit is for the warranty. Wouldn't be surprised if I was over 100,000.
for the first im in sweden so its more expensive the body and the 17-85 lens costs$ $2289 in sweden but im buyung a 30D its good enough less noise and 5FPS i enough
Assume you've also see "James' Broken Canon EOS 20D". My 20D started doing the same as your on Saturday night. I'm guessing it's a shutter repair!! not cheap! Removing batteries including backup makes no difference whatsoever.
man spray some switch cleaner on ya button then keep pushing it.. it will clear eventualy

@HoneycombAgent
Undefined error.
It's an error that the camera isn't programmed to recognise specifically.

your first mistake was not buying a NIKON! and your second? not addressing the software first. your shutter fires looks fine otherwise

but you are not using the card, so it can be hardware issue, maybe there is a shortcircuit inside the body from the moisture.
zerocode92 3 years ago
when the "ERR 99" message appear?
1. Turn off the camera.
2. Insert the CF card.
3. Turn on the camera.
4. Format the CF card in the camera.
Does the "ERR 99" message appear? If so, then the CF card is the most
likely source of the issue. Try using a different card.
