  • Its not nationalism, its just pride in your home, if Jamaica Queens ever stood up, I would rep that strong. I don't Vizenos is being nationalistic, he doesn't believe that his location is any better than another, he is just excited about his home's accomplishment

  • the best thing that Margret Thatcher ever did besides a brief ass kicking of Argentina was to piss off Bragg enough to start him on his music career.

  • don't matter where the song's from stand firm im union till i die 1560 iupat sarnia canada

take care of you and yours

  • This is an American song, written and sung in support of the UMWA (United Mine Workers of America) by a coal-miner's daughter and wife. I've got no problem with other nations adopting this song, but it was born and sung in the miners' picket lines in West Virginia and Kentucky.

  • @TheVizenos Nationalism is stupid. This song is about the workers' struggle, no matter where they are.

  • @TheVizenos But the song applies to all miners, from all countries.

  • @TheVizenos American song... with slightly different lyrics methinks.

  • @ricknelms big difference between a song coming from a place and a song-writer coming from there. The song is about a very British situation and it would not wear an American accent very well.

  • @smcginnessuk @smcginnessuk C'mon mate. The song is about "Bloody Harlan" .It is not about a British situation maybe Billy Bragg CHANGED the words?

Come all of you good workers,

Good news to you I’ll tell,

Of how that good old union

Has come in here to dwell.

cho: Which side are you on?

    Which side are you on?

    Which side are you on?

    Which side are you

  • @ricknelms Not sure we are arguing what we think we are arguing. :-) I am saying the lyrics of the song are about a British situation. You are saying it is a Ky song where the lyrics have been changed. I am happy to concede that but to me that makes it a different song coz, to me, songs are about lyrics...

  • My daddy was a miner, And I’m a miner’s son, And I’ll stick with the union, Till every battle’s won. They say in Harlan County, There are no neutrals there. You’ll either be a union man, Or a thug for J.H. Blair. Oh, workers can you stand it? Oh, tell me how you can. Will you be a lousy scab, Or will you be a man ? Don’t scab for the bosses, Don’t listen to their lies. Us poor folks haven’t got a chance, Unless we organize.
  • @smcginnessuk Try Natalie merchants version. And this does have a lot to do with this country. . . l4ook up life here before the unions and see what things we ALL enjoy because of them.

  • I know who's side i'm on.

  • its about basic human rights . and the american flag to my recollection stil lays out in high treason a jolly rodger some people have no shame. they however are seen by human eyes

  • corporation of the state . extremisim the depression comunism which side are u on?

afganistan viet nam or the shatilla death camps or pardon me refugee camps so which side are u on?

  • tory crimes?

  • I'm on the side that ISN'T full of a socialist union babies who are ruining the US economy.

  • @SanguineBullet667 This isn't about America. This is from the UK. And it's about the Miner strikes that happened in the UK a while back, asking the police who's side they were on because they are working men like the miners. You obviously have no clue about OUR government so fuck off! Cheers!

  • @PopInTheClouds Its an American song from the Hills of Eastern Ky.

  • @ricknelms Really? "This Government had an idea and Parliament made it law" - first line. That originates from the Hills of Eastern Ky?? :-)

  • @smcginnessuk Yes written by Florence Reece,Harlan County,Ky.

  • @SanguineBullet667 that would be the Corporate Fascist State side.

  • What people don't realise is how many teenagers listen to Billy Bragg these days aha

I have so many mates/ex's who love him to bits. And I love him myself.

    This is real music. <3

  • check out my 80s baby song and share if you like

  • FUCK THATCHER UP THE IRA

  • @mcgzer You just don't get it...do you?

  • wow first time i have ever even come close to this song and yet it sounds like a pure classic. maybe it is in all my naivety but from now its a classic in my mind

  • The Unions created the middle class.

  • @hoosierhiver The middle class existed before the unions, so either you are wrong or your use of the term "middle class" is different from my use.

  • @pgconn The Middle Class was an extremely small group of people. Unions brought a living wage to the working man which created what we now know as the middle class. It is not a surprise that with the attack on Unions that the middle class is shrinking. The ultra rich and their stooges do not care about the middle class.

  • @815Sox Good s##T

  • @815Sox you mean a different thing when you say "middle class" - we are, as Oscar Wilde said, divided by a common language. For British people middle class means doctor, accountant, ... I am working class.

I remember my Marxist trade unionist dad railing about some commentary on the TV about the the Flintstones cartoon where it showed them crushing rocks with dinosaurs as a "middle-class" job, in his words, "as though everyone with a job in America was f***ing middle-class."

  • ****** OCCUPY WALL STREET!! *********

  • !!!Occupy!!!

  • #OWS

  • I hate corporations. All they do is squeeze out the small and medium sized businesses so ppl cant compete against them. The argument then is that they create jobs... WRONG all they do is outsource jobs to india and china thus sucking the wealth out of the UK. These parasites need to be destroyed!

  • Comment removed

  • Thatcher= UNFORGIVEN!!!!!.....................DECIMATED the lives of the miners and associated businesses ...destroyed communities....all through sheer hatred of the unions...economically it made no sense and many pits could still be producing coal at a far cheaper rate than what we are importing it for.destroyed industry has it was once known..crying shame.

  • Billy for P.M

  • Great song - and great photo! Anything I could add would be an anticlimax..........

  • these corporations are walking away with record profits and record low tax rates... cheeky bastards. 99% OCCUPY!

  • although as a working class man now the police are complaining i have no sympathy remember the miners and the battle of the beanfield

  • @karezza1 Well done you ignorant troll. How about you go get a life.

  • People who can not spell should be sterilized like the junk DNA that they are.

  • @pec104 That does not sound at all tory?

  • @pec104 Too true. Youtube really does reveal the amount of illiterate people in this country.

  • @pec104 "People who can not spell should be sterilized"...

People who cannot spell should be sterilized.

    There...I fixed it!

  • @OhNonottheNWO Should that not be sterilised?

  • viva greece, WE GONNA MAKE IT THROUGH THIS BROTHERS

  • Along with many thousands of others public sector workers I shall be on strike on the 30th.

  • NO POWER WITHOUT ACCOUNTABILITY

  • There's a lesson here........the unions and labour couldnt or wouldnt do it...now its our turn! We dont need parties anymore, they've got the guns but we've got the numbers!

  • OCCUPY!

  • not available on mobiles. huh!

  • Seems like we need Billy Bragg to bloody speak out for the workers again.

  • support rioting Greece by any means fellows!

  • FUCK the TORIES and everything there disgusting elitist educated ways taught them

  • @aikiscotsman *their. Yeah, fuck education....

  • @aikiscotsman Like the difference between 'there' and 'their'.

  • @aikiscotsman lol so what does that make the other pack of &*!$s?

  • @Slipknot120696 In America case yes , but are you seriously suggesting shrinking the uk's , Jeez were have you been the last 20 years the armed forces have been absolutely decimated, yeah lets shrink it to the point we can no longer defend ourselves if need be. (Hint of sarcasm)

  • @Slipknot120696 i agree, not always but usually rightwing governments prefer less government and welfare unfortunately tends to be targeted because its one of the biggest expenditures and can come with freeloaders, i class myself as a libertarian so i'm all for smaller government but i would shrink other areas, anyone who advocates bigger and bigger government must be crazy , out of work politician or have a hidden agenda, before you know it the government will be wiping your ass for you.

  • Which side are you on boys?

    A question for the ages.

  • @Slipknot120696 (im assuming from your comment you're referring to welfare) I'm curios to know what makes you think it's a left-wing policy, there is no only left and right wing policies. welfare was introduced in the u.k in 1945 under a Clement Attlees labour government considered by many as a centre-right government. Oh and his music is shit !!!

  • @Slipknot120696 .....million pound mansion i might add on the "hideously white" Dorset coast , oh and dont forget the property in spain.!!!

  • @Slipknot120696 I'm working class and live on a council estate my family have always lived on the bread line , does that qualify me for "left-wing policys"same-old shit just a slightly different colour, like i said bragg is a hypocritical loony commie twat, he preaches against bankers but promotes more control for the e.u and globalisation which plays into bankers hands, he drives around his home town of Barking promoting immigration and multiculturalism then quickly retreats back to his mansion

  • Billy bragg his music is shit and his politics even worse !!!

  • @PEABALLS then why did you come here? fuck off back to your justin bieber vids cock snogger

  • @1991NickC Yeah i listen to bieber, what a twat, billy bragg is a hypocritical lefty commie twat with music and politics straight of the "Red" manifesto !!!!

  • @1991NickC I'm working class and live on a council estate my family have always lived on the bread line , does that qualify me for "left-wing policys"same-old shit just a slightly different colour, like i said bragg is a hypocritical loony commie twat, he preaches against bankers but promotes more control for the e.u and globalisation which plays into bankers hands, he drives around his home town of Barking promoting immigration and multiculturalism then quickly retreats back to his mansion...

  • I worked for a Union, and none of the fantasies were true. No dential insurance, piss poor medical, no vacation time, no sick days, no helping or fighting for raises, no holidays...etc...nothing. I will never work for another Union. These songs may have been true back in the 80s and whatnot, but today they arent.

  • @BeyondEvil308 Well, unions today are weak. But unionized workers statistically do have better wages, and better benefits. Those are just facts.

  • That image (of Scargill) defined an era & it'll stay with me forever.I worked in the shipyard at the time & felt it as strongly as Scargill & the miners.

  • What's the unionist take on 21st century reality of Chinese factories putting NAm and Euro workers outta work?! Commie capitalism is the monkey wrench of today's modern eroding society.

  • Great song. Bragg knows how to write um'

  • bring it on arsehole.thats you dickhead, hornet0biker.you are just a child

  • the consequences of thatcher are irrelevant in a true socialist society. She will be dead soon but capitalism lives on.The labour party perpetuate her legacy, which is a total hatred of the poor in this country. --------- Do you all see!

  • @tezzabanboy I see you fine boy. Can you see that noose in your minds eye? Do you think we won't find you after the revolution you shill bitch.?

  • Why is it that Billy Bragg's songs on youtube always attract a certain brand of neo-nazi nutjob?! Why do they even come here!?!

  • @HHPP00 The paycheck.

  • fuck the system is all that i can say

  • Which side are you on Billy Bragg? Treacherous jumped up little shouty shit....the over-amplified gobshite.

VIVA the miners, Viva the workers.

  • Wapping was the same shit BBC what the fuck was they reporting cos it didnt happen like that All partys use the police as a political tool

  • All you out there who supported so-called "Old Labour". Let's get together and show these Etonian shits and " New Labour" that we can still beat them! I've just retired from teaching after 35 years and I have great hope for this generation. Start the fightback! Let's revive the" Old Labour " principles, they're needed more than ever

  • @dmg83 Part 2 of my spiel: The right wing like brain dead idiots claim that TOO MUCH regulation caused the crisis and that if there was MORE FREEDOM, for the rich then it would not have happened, it is precisely because of allowing wankers to have too much power and treat wanking like a business rather than the financial service it should be that we are in this mess, let the tossers getloads of money then take 95% of it off them again in tax, they personally should repay all monies plus intrest

  • @dmg83 Well, I'm glad I landed here today; you've given me a bit of energy - surrounded as I am by New/Tired Labour, LibDems [whom I am growing to loathe rather than simply ignore], and people who "don't do politics".

You're right - we are socialists & it wasn't EVER easy to be so! We are the new Chartists, or we are nothing.

Looking at the other comments here. there's a petulance we can all do without - less posturing, more kicking up a fuss........!

  • @TheCochyn eh look at my post I am just documenting how the idotic right wing think deregulation is what is required when that is what got us all in a global mess in the first place, that and a global trend for banks to become more than simple utilities.

  • @SpaceShipWarrior

Well, I've read your comment - and it seems eminently reasonable.....but I have no idea why it's directed at my comment....!

Still, at least we're using a decent enough vocabulary, unlike quite a few here. I think I have to give up youtube; it's so often like being stuck in bad pub with Daily Mail readers, don't you agree?

  • @TheCochyn Daily Mail? I feel like some comments are Hitler Mail. American Conservs actually think america had nothing to do with pinochet gettin power and that they boycotted chile when Allende was overthrown... Must be fox news etc feeding them and brain washing em when CIA members are on record as saying they wanted to smash Allende. Them evil repubs dont like true democ in SAmerica. An they are actually classical libs not remotely like 1 nation torries....Then their is the teens on Utube...

  • @TheCochyn Then their are the 12 to 17 year olds who dont stop mentioning bieber, the people who read a post and confuse the personal pronoun I with the personal but second person pronoun "U". The swearing, the praising of crap crap vids, the criticism by the slow, young or trolls of good videos.... I mean its mind blowing some of the people u speak to on the net, even the more intelligent ones seem to often be fixated on one point of view and unable to tolerate a slight variance from that view.

  • @TheCochyn And character limit is annoying as is the stupid posts that get a high rating and some rare insighful posts that get voted down by the highly dumed down and illeterate mob. Then their are the heavy weight pseudo intellectuas on other sites who will attack you if your sentance is a little out of place if your say anything they dont like but let their good old snp buddies who have taken far less effort get away with any sort of grammer as long as no rocking of a boat or criticising of

  • a golden goose that must never be criticised... And the ones who call you slow when they dont know what a snob is or a mondegreen etc etc....

  • @dmg83 i'm 15 and just enjoy this song. please explain what this old labour/new labour concept is.

  • @dmg83 i'm 15 and just enjoy this song. please explain what this old labour/new labour concept is.

  • @KongKegso2 the old labour party was sett up to support the working classes and the unions, the majority of honest working taxpayers who kept the country going, the labour party was hijacked by Blair and his cronies who changed it to new labour who's allegiance is to brussels and their multicultural plans for europe, Blair has sold his country and the working class out, we should start a new workers party and give the honest taxpayer a voice amongst the thieves and liars in parliment

  • @john131349 so lets get this straight ... they riot for some criminal getting shot in london. but no one protests this (any more?)?

  • @dmg83

I'm an old fashioned liberal and I'll join you.

  • @dmg83 When you say Old Labour what period are you reffering to exactly? Do mean the halcyon days of the mid 70's when Britain became the dingiest and poorest country in Europe.Labour people always make the excuse that their past terms in power don't count because they happened to have had the wrong leader at the time. They'll say the same about Ed Milliband eventually.

  • @dmg83 Join the LRC!

  • @dmg83 Your driven by fucking clan like instincts like a caveman. Labour, tory, its two sides of the same coin, a lie, a scam. They get you fucking tribal about this as if Labour were your local footy team. Never vote.

  • @toweronepower They're really not two sides of the same coin, Labour isnt ideal, but it's a hell of alot better than the conservatives. The Tory's have been cutting left, right and centre, Labour would not have cut anywhere near as much. Cutting doesnt even make sense, to cut money in the public sector, means people lose jobs, if they lose jobs, they lose money, if they lose money, they wont buy things, if they dont buy the things, the economy wont pick up. Simple logic.

  • @dmg83 This generation is one of revolution.

  • Don't give all the power to corporations and then expect government to step in and give you a job. Wish in one hand, shit in the other.

  • @folwert dont you realise that saying such things on a vid such as this is only gonna get you insulted.

  • @folwert

    Bootlicker.

  • @folwert nobody wants to be on your side fascist pigs!!!go back to germany!!

  • @folwert fuck conservatives, i certainly aint any smelly piece of left wing scum, but capitalism and communism go hand in hand today. there is only one way to go to destroy communism.

  • @88chubz good luck with that, arsehole

  • @88chubz Fuck off you little paid bitch.

  • @88chubz theres no such thing as a communist country, they are dictatorships, not exactlly what marx had in mind. true communism following the manifesto has yet to happen.

  • @kram83au Oh really I give you cuba. Plus a number of countries in Southern America and lets not forget the counties and country in which andrew breivik carried out his deluded terror. The only good fascists is a dead fascist, via la revolution.

  • @SpaceShipWarrior oh dear, castro maybe the man to start a revolution, not the man to govern you idiot, he was as good as a dictator yi clown. plus his hands were tied behind his back with an embargo.as for south american countries, every time they get a socialist in,the yanks go and seek them out. chavez is about is close as youl get to socialism, again the rightwing make it difficult for him to implement leadership.brievek, belongs to the christian right. and you think i support fascism,oh dear

  • @kram83au I NEVER said you were a fascist but if you feel guilty about something all means get it off your chest, where Brevik did his evils those were socialist/communist nations is my point. Thats what I am saying america are scum nazis who deserve divine punishment and for her people to rebel against tyranny.

  • @SpaceShipWarrior dont try and play that card with me about fascism. anyway i dont think were very far from singing off the same song sheet. norway is a democratic country with leanings to the left, their probably one of the most humantarian countrys along side sweden.america is a symptom of capitalist greed thats on the verge of eating itself up.like bowie once sang, ''and mickey mouse has grown up a cow''. that cow is now on its last legs. we must be careful what we wish for. china in power!

  • @kram83au We are not, you misinterpreted my line of the only good fascist is a dead fascist as being directed at you. I am not even directing this at any particular fascist, only if their is a red uprising will fascists be in danger and for that I don't apologize for those that pull the trigger on the fascits, it wont be me but they will have our support to stop fascism spreading its evil in Europe.

  • @SpaceShipWarriorwe are not ?what, singing from the same song sheet. whatever. trotsky and marx were the men to lead men. hope that clears things up a bit for you. i side with the working man, which side are you on?

  • @kram83au Again I dont know what your complaning about I said we are not, in agreement with your second sentance about us not being far from singing from same sheet. So I dont see the problem.

  • @SpaceShipWarrior what complaint?, do you actually read posts. fuck me man, id bet your fighting with your shadow right now. lighten up man.

  • @kram83au I know fine well about america they are scum who gives them the right eh? A revolution will happen in america and the oil barons etc will be forced into poverty and the poor will be rich.

  • cost of employing a miner 20,000 on benefits 7,000 the cost of being employed and

paying tax ,raising a family ,giving pride to those children and grandchild priceless.

and as for the government running industries look at gas ,electric, water ,and everything else they sold off even our gold.

  • cm6405 just listened to UB40 one in ten it's now one in five mmmmm....worse since the mines closed or better i wonder.

  • President Mubarek on trail in Egypt. What time Thatcher?

  • cm6005 we were already on a council estate with everybody living as one kids went to the same school, mams brought us to and from school, and dads all worked together. my wife is now on a university higher education course half way through her diploma ,council estates have everything to be proud of we're the back bone of this country

  • And now we just have 2 fucking tory parties to choose from - Conservative or Labour - no difference. Maybe its about time we the people stood up and marched for fairness in society and peace. It costs £500K every time we send a bomb over Libya but we cant afford to look after the elderly, infirm, disabled and disadvantaged. Which sie are you on boys?

  • cm05 cannot tell you how much the miners strike and then the closures of the mines have affected the valley's of South Wales we did have a community but you killed it. Da Awn you bastard!.

  • @claredai of course it affected those people badly and it is heartbreaking to see real working-class communities destroyed and replaced with council estates. However if it was sustained then the same argument could be used to keep the gold mines open in the wild west USA that closed in the 1880s! Throwing money at businesses that are not profitable for sentiment is madness. However maybe some time in the future more mines may reopen due to the rising price of fuel making it economically viable

  • @cm6405 it's not for "sentiment" it's so you don't end up with mass unemployment and a recession that costs the nation a whole lot more than a mine that's not turning a profit, and now thanks to unemployment you get countless men and women who are live on the dole because there is no work and therefore no life satisfaction for so many people in the UK. What's more our reliance on the financial service industry that Thatcher imposed has cost us dearly post credit crunch.

  • @edwardio2 Have you even heard of the sovereign debt crisis affecting pretty much every country in the EU and the US? How on earth is the country supposed to employ 180,000 miners as well as the other 6 million public sector workers (and pensions) as well as paying off our fiscal deficit. The US is on the brink of defaulting on its national debt due to government inaction on cutting public sector jobs and you say we should have a nationalized coal industry?

  • @cm6405 I would argue that the "sovereign debt crisis" hit this country much harder because as a direct result of the mine closures we now rely on the financial service industry, IE men in fancy suits making short term investments which if you remember caused the crisis in the first place. My question to you is why could the UK afford to hand out benefits to all those unemployed, but it couldn't afford to employ them as minors that could lessen that cost by mining coal that we can sell?

  • @edwardio2 would you like to work down the mine? The mines shutting give me a brighter future.

  • @geordienath I'd honestly rather work in a mine than be unemployed, and you were one of the lucky ones then

  • @edwardio2 Cost of employing a miner=£20,000 a year, someone on benefits= about £7000.

Also in the 80s the natural gas (and nuclear) was starting to replace coal as a heating fuel and a power generating fuel. The government is also trying to create a green economy with incentives for alternative energy. Coal is the the most polluting fuel by far as well as not being economically viable to mine . If UK coal was a profit-making industry then UK Coal plc would be reopening pits

  • @cm6405 well then I'd rather those miners had a larger salary and a job than no job and a pitiful amount of money. The environment doesn't come into it in the '80s, global warming wasn't truly an accepted science until well after the closure of the mines. It's not about profit, it's about people's lives. The government's job isn't to make money.

  • @edwardio2 I would also like to ask you a question, why should a government be responsible for running an industry? Is the government a money-making organization? No it is there to provide vital services to its citizens such as education, police and armed forces. Why dont you go to Greece to see what nationalized industry has done for them? They are bankrupt, cannot pay their creditors and will be economic slaves for generations paying off interest as everyone is on the government payroll.

  • @cm6405 your examples seem to me to be rather invalid and unrelated, America's economy is in trouble because of it's ridiculous defence spending and horrendously low taxation. Greece's economy is in trouble because so few people pay proper taxes. A capitalist system is needed for a country, that goes without saying, and the government should be providing vital services for its people, including JOBS that the Thatcher government destroyed. Also, I have been to Greece, and it's lovely ;)

  • @edwardio2 we live n a globalized economy and jobs in mining, pottery, steel mills, shipbuilding and so forth are done in the far east due to low wages. It is no wonder that all the worlds growth is there as they are not saddled with debt from years of borrowing to support a load of socialist prgrams like the NHS and civil service gravy trains. If thatcher hadnt destroyed the unions we would be in much deeper shit. Not being fiscally conservative is leading to the decline of western economies

  • @cm6405 it's not about how much money is in the western economy, it's about how it's distributed, I don't believe that a political system is there to make money, we weren't in a recession until the mines closed. Bottom line is people had a much better quality of life while they still had jobs. And I'd happily see Britain be a weak, poor country full of happy, fulfilled people than a country where rich people have all the happiness and the poor have low opportunities and low life satisfaction.
