  • gavin i use a nikon, yes i know i know but i love em, they're awesome....lol..anyways, what would you conside to be an all round all singing and dancing lens?

    i use the nikon d7000

  • Did you use a polarizing filter ?

  • Gavin, will you mind if you could post the info such as shutter speed, aperture and iso of each of artwork? thank you

  • Gavin my name is Jose i enjoy watching your videos no nonsense aproach you remind me of a sniper takes few shots but those shots are right on the money keep up with these great video's

  • Hey Gavin.

Ive wondered how you get the windows to look that blue, and the wall to look much darker.

  • What kind of filters are you using on this lens?

  • i only have a kodak camera can i get good photography shots with that? im just a beginner in photography.

  • @ccotton1108 It's not really about the camera, it is more about you and how you set up the shot.

  • @TheSbzStudios oh okay i guess i'll have to learn how to set up the shot better

  • @TheSbzStudios oh okay i guess i'll have to learn how to set up the shot better

  • Hi Gavin, I love your 15 minutes photo challenge series... I noticed that you use mostly cropped frame camera and various camera bag and straps. Do you use cropped frame body because its lighter and smaller to carry around compared to the full frame 5D? Among the straps which one is your favourite for travel photography, the standard strap, quick strap on your shoulder or the handstrap?

  • is the pictures here edited? coz they look so good!!

  • how do you get your photos to have such crisp and amazing colours? do you edit them in photoshop?

  • The pictures you show on the videos are they the orginals or the ones you have photoshoped? you are really good! I prefer to use Nikon, i have the D3000 i love photography, and tips?

  • Hi Gavin! i just got myself a dslr and I was looking thru some videos to help me take better photos. Your videos have been very inspiring! I am so amazed on how you can see the beauty in everything that you see. Thank you so much!

  • Wow i always hated looking up and making photo's of buildings tops. But i can now see that you can get quite fabulous photo's of it. I'll definitely give it a try next time im on vacation. And i love your eye for detail. You are a true professional, i hope i get there some day! Btw love the photos on 2.28 and 5.26!

  • you are an outstanding photographer....luv your stuff!

  • 10/10!!

    Great photographer :)

P.S. does anybody else love the background music? I think it's real nice.

  • hey, sometimes your pictures look a bit like HDRs. but you obviously arent taking HDRs in the video.

how do you get the colours so powerful/hdr looking?

  • Gavin. I love your videos. Very informative and inspirational. Would you advise the 24-105 L over the 24-70L . Thanks

  • thanks again Gavin for that inspirational video, you make it look so easy.

  • Gavin, I noticed you mostly shoot whith your trusty 24-105 on a crop body. I'm looking into this combination and wondering if you ever feel the missing wide angle oppurtunity (i.e. 17-24mm)

  • Yes, wide angle is a problem, but if I'm not filming I'll also have a 10-20mm lens in the bag.

  • Do you find yourself changing lense more than you'd like? I'm really hung up between two choices, either go for the 15-85, or the combination of 10-22 and 24-105... The 10-22 is allready in my posession... Hard choice,

All that aside i have to say it again was a real blast to see this video of yours.

    cheers

  • I change the lenses all the time, it's not a problem.

The day Canon make a 10-200 f2.8 L lens I'll be first in the queue ;-)

  • Hi Gavin, how are you able to create good texture and color in your photos (especially the ones you shot at Bath Abbey)?

    Thanks.

  • The secret is use RAW and increase the clkarity and vlacks. Try it and you'll quickly get the idea.

  • Great question, unfortunate response (for me who doesn't shoot in RAW!). The pictures came out beautiful! Now could you take those same pictures in jpg and have the colours come out looking as intense as yours did without the use of photoshop or would you need to do some tweaking with photoshop?

Thanks for the great videos, I'm a huge follOwer now!

  • @PhotoGavin clarity and blacks u mean.. it would be awesum if u have a tutorial on editing landscapes and architecture shots.. thanks i love ur videos!

  • @PhotoGavin That´s interesting.. Because I was just thinking, the amount of work you must put into Photoshop.. For example that door knocker at the end, it seemed almost lit with reflectors or other equipment of some kind. Real vivid for sure

  • Hi Gavin,

Can you please let me know the name of the devise that you sometimes attach on hot shoe and can trigger speedlite remotely. I wanted the exact name. I went to this shop today and they have various different types but very expensive :(

    Thanks

  • PT-04 on ebay.

  • thanks :)

  • Another interesting Video Gavin.... I notice you don't use a lens hood..? And it looks like ? you are using a skylight filter too ?

Thanks for all your excellent tutorials......

  • Correct no lens hood on that day and always a UV filter fitted.

  • Hi Gavin, at 3.55 you show a finished image which has a painted effect, I've noticed a lot of studios doing this effect now, can you please do a tutorial on this.... love the vids, keep it up :)

  • Hey. I'm guessing he's put up the "Blacks" and "Fill Light" slider a lot in Adobe Camera Raw. This tends to give that kind of effect.

  • Do a search for the "Dave Hill look" which should give you some answers.

  • Hi Gavin,

Hope you can teach us on how you enhanced those pictures... Thank you

  • again... very nice!

  • Ok 1) ive never seen someone look so cold in all my life ..lol 2) BBC should give you your own show becose i love your vids and i dont even use photo shop 3) Get your ass down here to Australia mate u will never be cold again and ill take you to some amazing places, we will fill a 16gig MC in 1 day lol .. Hit me up gav .. Photo Gav best channel on youtube and i got my SLR batts charged waiting for you to come down under ;)

  • Three excellent points, but do I really want to swap snow storms for bush fires? Probably yes.

If you think I looked cold in this video wait until you see the video we shot the night before in the snow!!!

  • i do like the way the photos look but it would be nice to see some photos you dont enhance, only a suggestion,

  • Thank you Gavin for the great stuff you put together and share with us all! Love the Bach musical piece, it's one of my favs. Going over the flickr to check out your catch o the day

  • great pics

  • Awesome,

Can you please let us know how to take pics with that blue sky without any processing and filters.

  • You're best bet is to use a good polarizing filter (hopefully you were referring to 'without filters' as in Photoshop).

  • Thanks!

I was thinking about playing with white balance and achieve it using changing the color temperature. I was just curious.

I agree ! (Thats the next thing in my list)

  • sweet pics

  • hi Gavin, Great tutorial. Could you do a tutorial on architecture photography, as in what points you tend to look at in a building when you take a picture.

  • another good video How about a credit for your camera man/woman

  • a bit over edited photos, but thats my point of view

  • Love these 15min videos. keep it up.

I was wondering if you could show us how to you the post processing of just some of those photos? like after you've done your 15min walkaround.

(remembered in one of these videos that you have done this)

  • Thanks Gavin for the Tutorial....awesome composition on your photos!!!

  • If I win the lottery, I'm going to buy a 50D, love the sound it makes :)

    You're awesome!

  • WOW! Great vid and love the pp done on the pics.

  • Great Video, Thanks For Sharing, Learning Lots

  • Love that shutter sound :)

  • Spoken like a true camera geek ;-)

  • Do you live in Bath?

  • No, just passing through.

  • you really get some great colours on your shots... is that filters or editing?

  • It's a bit of editing and a bit of photography.

  • thanks for the reply :) can you do a video a some point on colours?

  • Thank you Mr Hoey, such great videos! Merci

  • Je t'en prie

  • Wow nice. You should visit Estonia Tallinn old town. Really great place to take pictures. :)

  • That would be nice. I've seen some amazing pictures taken in Tallin. If you live near by, then you're very lucky.

  • Yes only 50km. away :)

  • nice tutorial

  • r u on 'program' mode? your colors r so rich and deep....its amazing ! please share!

    thanks.

  • No Av (Aperture Priority) mode all the way through. Shot in RAW and increased vibrency in Photoshop

  • The sky looked really bright and washed out while you were walking around. Can you please do a tutorial of how you made the sky so rich and blue? I'd also like to see how you popped the texture in quite a few of them. Thanks!

  • The video camera didn't really do the place justice. The blue sky was there, yes I helped it along with a vibrenct boost. The basic technique is photography (not photoshop). Keep the sun at 90 degrees to your subject to maximise the blues.

  • I'm with 'kuyax101', you get very vivid terracotta and blues in you photo's, post production tutorial please

  • Look back at my previous tutorials to see some of the RAW processing I do. I like puchy colours and texture so Vibrency & Clarity get used a lot.

  • great shots

  • Some very nice shots. You look freezing though =P Were you shooting in automatic mode or manual? I didn't see you go near any settings when you were shooting.

  • Good point. I always keep my camera on Aperture Priority mode (Av on Canon) when I'm out taking photos.

  • Thanks for the info, keep up the good work!

  • Gav, why would you just do 15mins? i used to love driving through the town.... if i could of had the chance i would of spent all day there... it is a beautiful city

  • Simple. It was FREEZING!!!

My guess is 15 minutes is as much as most people spend in one spot before moving on, so I make these videos to show what's possible in a small amount of time.

  • another 15 min challenge well presented and of course superb shots

  • Thanks.

  • sir gavin, can you make a vid about how you post process your shots taken during a 15min challenge? please please please... : )

  • I was noticing his edit style as well. Beautiful application of vignette and I'm curious as to how he gets such a rich textured look.

  • The secret is to shoot in RAW. Have a look at some of my previous videos on how I process the images.

  • I'm so glad you mentioned this in one of your earlier videos. It's probably the best piece photography-related advice I have been given. RAW has forced me to put a bit of time and money into my storage and back-up needs (they are so big), but it just makes it so easy to make a photo look so much better!

  • Great tutes Gavin, Any chance of putting the aperture and speed settings on the images - would love to know what settings were used on the chair shot.

  • No problem.

    f4 ISO200 1/80th focal length 105mm

Have a look at my Flickr page for more detailed info on all the images.

  • I think these are better than any kind of tutorial, because they show how you work in the real world.

  • Agreed.

  • I liked the seats pic the best.

  • nice!!!

  • beautiful
