Lol the only reason the snes ever passed the Genesis in sales were all the add-ons that took sales away from sega (sega cd, 32x). Not to mention they were selling the snes when sega had already released the Saturn. During the actual life of the systems the genesis was always ahead. The SNES caught up after sega had moved on and the snes was being sold at a fraction of the price it did at launch. They were shovelling it on store shelves while they were figuring out what the N64 was going to be.

As those things were add-ons, and technically required a Genesis in the first place, I seriously doubt they took sales away. I mean, instead of a 32X, what would they buy? Another Genesis? At worst, they led to consumer confusion and dissatisfaction; a blow to Sega's image and bottom line.

Otherwise, yes, it was the early discontinuation of the Genesis. Japan was the only place where the Gen bombed, and unfortunately Sega of Japan made the decision. Big blunder there.

@0M9H4X Well, that still makes it the fifth best selling console ever made. It's behind only the NES (61 million), Game Boy (100 million), PlayStation 2 (140 million) and Nintendo DS (150 Million). Sure, 49 is pretty low compared to the top three, but it's a LOT compared to most other systems.

And remember that the SNES wasn't sold in every country in the world. A lot of places only had Turbografx-16, Mega Drive, and/or Neo Geo.

Still, it was a different time, with a different market, and as you've pointed out, distribution issues. The 16-bit era was a fiercely competitive time. You had Sega winning Europe/Brazil, Nintendo winning Japan, and an all out war between the two for control of the US market that wasn't decided until the bitter end. The SNES experienced some stiff competition from the likes of the Genesis and PC-Engine, whereas the NES pretty much dominated its era and the Playstation 1 just completely blew out N64 and Saturn. You also have to keep in mind the market was different back then, not as big.
