i lived in shaw until i was 5 (1995-2000) and when i saw this it reminded me of what it use to be like, the station hasnt changed a bit :), although i do remember alot less trees at the side of the track going towards victoria, but i wish they had kept the trains and not metrolink ah well i will hope on the metrolink from besses o'th barn to shaw when its done and see what shaw is like now, it will be a nice time :)
On the way back from Shaw to Manchester Victoria the other day, we were just pulling out of Derker, and it was really smooth, you actually couldnt tell it was a pacer, it was that smooth. Then, we went under a bridge and I think the turbulence must have set it off from the bridge because you could definately feel it bouncing around after that, then it slowed down and we could hardly feel it, but then we got on to that curved bridge near Mumps and it started again, I dont think its just the track
Haha, yeah definately, I've just this second seen one bounce past my house, and as the front carriage dipped, the back carriage rose slightly. It just looked like they wasn't even coupled up, the middle was swaying about a foot in each direction, it looked so fun, haha
yerh they make me laff when i see other people on them bouncing around like there on an out of cotrol roller coaster
there not too bad when there ful becuz they have the weight to keep them stable but when theres like 3 people on the whole train at 75 mph its even worse on the southport line
its the most depressing thing to fave to do
its like the have a mind of there own
unfortunatly tho they wont use that mind and bounce them selfs all the way to the scrap heap and give us all rest !!!
Wrong mate, Cummins powered, with Voith gearboxes. Very few had Leyland power, as they were unreliable. These were re engined very early on. Even some 141's were converted to Cummins/Voith
The Pacers have the modified body of a leyland national. And leyland originally developed a full leyland national bus as an experiment to implement bus type trains or rail buses.
The 142 and pacers have been widened but the bus layout is still very obvious.
The lack of bogies and four wheel arrangement makes the ride very bouncy and pretty fast.
The sprinter and super sprinter based their trains on carriages rather than buses, with an inconspicuous engine underneath.
i have found it to be about 75% of it is the track what is making the units bounce. if you get one of the units from Stockport to Manchester pic on the express line there is no bouncing at all untill you gover the points.
Very true, a smooth track modern track layout doesn't suffer from the uneven older tack track layout that relies on spaced connected points.
I'm currently living in Ipswich which oddly doesn't operate any of the pacers, although you'll find many single unit 153's and twin or four unit 156 super sprinters.
I'm originally from the NW, and I've travelled on the manchester victoria - liverpool route on mersey rails 142's. And Northern rail's blackpool - colne route.
The Oldham Loop (Shaw & Crompton Station being on this section of track) is a very historic part of the rail network. It was used to transport cotton and coal which was spun and mined all over Oldham. The track is still there from that period of time, around 1920's or something like that. Thats why not many want the Oldham Loop to be converted to Metrolink. I, personally, don't want the conversion, but Mr. Wollas and his mates don't see the history.
Well really all trains Bounce about, some do it more than others. besides its not all to do with the train itself the track Quality can affect it as well and the track along this line is in poor condition which will make the train bounce more than it should do.
Nevertheless, the Pacers were renowned for poor ride quality, due to lacking bogies. They were built to be as cheap as possible, not for comfort. There were many track features which they had to negotiate at dead-slow speed which bogies DMUs had no trouble with - such as at Manchester Victoria and Carnforth - and they often produced so much flange squeal that passengers and residents alike feared for their hearing. On the Conwy Valley, they were an abject failure at replacing 101s.
This is a very nice little clip, quite different to the Shaw & Crompton clip I posted on my stream. Amazing what difference a few years makes. The 142's, especially their front ends make them look like different units. Mine was shot in 1991.
1. pacers only have 8 wheels unlike all other trains have 16, thats why it ois so bouncey. The Liverpool LS to Manchester (between Newton le willows and Patricoft) is bouncy on pacers, like it is going to crash.
That's why they call them nodding donkeys, come in three flavours, jaffa cakes, orange and whatever livery, yorkie bars, blue, and coffee creamy if I remember they were a two tone brown and cream, terrifying.
Whilst the Pacers are more bouncy than 150s, I prefer them due to their superior lineside visibility. 150/1s always seem to be like greenhouses in the summer.
its the radiator fan working extremely hard to cool the water (a common problem with 142s in warm weather).Probably not too far off reverting that engine to idle....
nice video :)

yerhh ahaha i have been thinkin that aswell
its fine untill it gets started then once its caught in its vicious loop it finds it hard to get out
its like that on the manchester to southport line its soo bad each carrige actually sways about a foot out from each other
drivers must think its a right joke to drive them at 75 mph
unfortunatly us passengers dont share there sence of humour :(

Yeah, I don't want them to be scrapped, they're so much more fun and have so much more character than the sprinters

Do you not think that 142's sound like Dennis Dart SLF buses and the MCV Evo buses also made by Dennis

It's interesting to compare the pacer and the 150 from 01:03 to about 01:13. The 150 seems to run quite smoothly and the Pacer bounces like mad!
