  • brilliant, sums up my younger days

  • Love his voice! :)

  • top song by top band!!

  • what a tune

  • Gone are the days when you could have a hit with a 2 minute song...

  • There is a very real connection with the Strangeways 2011 offering above!! But What is it????

  • Paul Heaeton is friggin brilliant and he is like me strugglin with his weight due to booze, but loves a drink, he is back in good old Manchester now..love you mate.

  • I'm only here because of David Tennant.

  • Griswalds fans?

  • Apparently they wrote fan letters to Trixie's Big Red Motorbike. Anyone know about that?

  • Lors de leur passage à paris, paul heaton n'avait pas été très aimable avec le public.

  • i love these guys

  • One of the anthems of it;s time. They dont make great bands like this in the Cowell fun factory!!

  • why does the singer remind me of morrissey

  • @whitecloadsscareme1 he does sound like him actually.

  • @whitecloadsscareme1 You do know (as I said above), who he became though?

  • id love a reunion

  • yes, because there were no terrorist problems in 1980s Britain. Get a grip you miserable cunts!

  • @jjnesbitt86 More bombs were going off in britain in 1980 than anytime since the war. Did you emigrate or something ?

  • i was trying to think what this sounded like - turns out i was thinking of a beautiful south song!

  • This is classic, I remember this well, not only on TOTP but listening to David 'kid' Jensen on a Sunday afternoon!

  • i always get sad watching these classic clips because i remember how great things were back then . now britain is a miserable, scumy, terrorist filled shithole

  • @cujo9 so so true and everyone is very unhappy even if they shouldnt be!!

  • Awesome stuff here! Thanks for posting it!

  • they were like a cheerful Smiths. Great band. Heatos a genius.

  • I love this band and I'm still listening to their music

  • well said redhotsuperskunk.todays music is a heep of crap the worst for years

  • this song makes me remember that on fridays I can take a beer @ 1:00 PM and enjoy the whole bottle...! "oh they open all your wallets and close all the minds (....)"

  • Dear sir/ madam,

Do you by any chance have any full editions of TOTP from 1986 and 1987 on videotape of DVD disc? If you do is there any chance of getting copies? I have quite a number of shows from the programme's history and am very willing to swap tapes or discs or buying copies from you?

Can you please let me know what you think?

    Thanks very much...

  • love love love this

  • dont know what your on about, tosser!

  • housemartins ripping off the smiths is pure bullshit

  • paul heaton top man !

  • Did anyody notice FATBOY SLIM on bass?

  • so thats how the lead singer of the band hot chip started out he was the guitarist in the The Housemartins p.s hes the one on the right wearing classes LOL :))

  • @ThePelincrew. Are you fuckin serious m8?

The 2 songs sound completly different!

Shame on you, now go and wash those ears out and LISTEN this time lol

  • come on PD!!!

  • housemartins are great band. but why so obvious copying the smiths?

  • Copying the Smiths? Do you even listen to music properly?

  • yes i am! do you?

and that's not just my opinion...

...The Housemartins were compared by many to The Smiths. However the Smith's guitarist Johnny Marr was not impressed. He complained that "'Happy Hour' was a complete rip-off of 'I Want The One I Can't Have', and they've nicked others too."

  • @ThePelincrew I don't think it sounds much like the Smiths actually - only similarity is the structure of the band name 'The ----s' :)

  • best ting to come out of hull

  • feck u all. this is genius

  • nice little bit of nostalgia !

  • Estoy de acuerdo con Veee8

La MUSICA HA MUERTO , casi desde 1994.

nowadays music is a fucking shit

  • Brilliant band!

  • I so freakin' LOVE the Housemartins!!

  • imagine these guys trying to sing a britany spears cover on a saturday night talent show ' i dont think they'ed make bootcamp . it shows how wroung things have become in the music world today , the house martins were fucking great

  • Amen brother, the music industry is dying along with other media because of the suits are only banking on a "sure thing",,,,music died not long after Nirvana in 1994.(one of many past examples....)

Hey, not to sound nostaligic but the last 10-15 years for top 40 music has sucked...you have to look hard to find something unique/raw and personal....

  • I agree with you...but you are comparing apples/oranges and that is insulting, ya?

  • no im not, im comparing raw groups to the factory made ones pushed in our ear drums today , funny how you never mention plums ? is that because your one , stick you laymen terms up ya batty along with your boyzone and westlife cd's

  • ease up, redhot. I didn't get your Britney Spears reference - that's all. I'm glad Veee8 could come along and clear things up for you.

For the record, I like plums... and bananas.

    Go suck!

  • @redhotsuperskunk *lehman

  • @redhotsuperskunk so true mate, great comment

  • @redhotsuperskunk BANG ON!!

  • @redhotsuperskunk

one of the greatest pop songs ever

  • @redhotsuperskunk You do know who their lead singer became don't you?

They where from not too far from where I live, very proud of my youth and yes of course they where fucking brill I thought!

Though most of it was just a blur as I was about 5 when this came out as a song, sort of remember it, need more of this type of stuff today, grr the music industry pisses me off today a bit.

  • @redhotsuperskunk That's because Paul Heaton's a legend lol.

  • back when music ment something and totp ment something RIP MUSIC

  • true music legend.

  • I was searching for this song damn long!!! :D now i have it!!! yeah!!!!1 its great!

  • listen to this version and then listen to barenaked ladies version and see how close they come to it

  • Michael Keaton and Steven Page do have similar singing styles.

  • sorry, Paul Heaton and Steven Page lol

  • Awesome!!!!!!!!

  • I agree

  • Why do people come on here and say thats shit,if you dont like it dont view it,knobs

  • ha heard this today in me dars car loved it just had to looks it up hehe whoo hooooo

  • ahhh i loved the housemartins they were awesome

  • From the nation that gave us Billy Ray Cyrus. Enough said.

  • Au contraire my friend - one of the cool things about The Housemartins was that they completely rejected the rock'n'roll stereotypes. And if you can find better harmony singing from any 80's band, please let me know...

  • Listen to the song "I want the one I can't have" by The Smiths and tell me that "Happy Hour" isn't a ripoff of that song.

  • Actually, it's not a ripoff of the "I want the one I can't have" at all. Different chords, different key, different harmonic progression, different lyrical theme, different arrangement. The only thing that's similar between those songs is the beat. And that particular beat has been used in lots of other songs.

  • I really was into the Housemartins and the smiths and played a bit of both on the guitar. Marrs guitar playing seemed to influence the housemartins as well as many others, but I think that the Housemartins took their music in an original direction. Marr cant gripe about being such a seminal player. Inevitably, everyone will steal your riffs when you are an archetype. Its no different than what occured with Jimmi Hendrix, or Bob Dylan

  • I reckon marr was influenced by the byrds anyway

  • good point. I didnt think of that.

  • You must be the only human being who could talk about Jimi Hendrix in a poxy House Martins video.

  • true he cant dance but by god he can sing and i thought the singing was more important too most of us not the dancin DUH

  • Thaank god for excstacy. Got cook off the bass and off his face! Love his greatest hits. Bring back snowballs!

  • Yeah Fatboy Slim . . . pity he went downhill after the House Martins and produced crappy rubbish from then on.

  • Hard to believe this is how FATBOY SLIM started in the music biz,But sure enough there is Norman Cook on the bass guitar LOL

  • What does it say on the drummer's shirt?

Love this song. Thx for posting this live version.

  • FRANKIE SAY

    ARM

    THE UNEMPLOYED

(A Frankie Goes to Hollywood Shirt)

  • THX andy. Love "Relax"

  • This song was brilliant to bounce around the dance-floor back then:>)

  • Fat boy slim on bass!!

  • this band is SOLID..

  • hahaa american with his head stuck up his own arse, no offence m8 pmsl

  • Haha an arrogant American; there's something I've never seen before! /endsarcasm

Maybe the rest of your country would have heard of TOTP if they weren't so busy fucking their sisters.

  • Dont slag off the Americans just because ones being an asshole, i lived there for a year an 99% of them were great! Plus this one is retarded.. why did they have a "British Invasion" (Beatles, Who, Kinks, Stones etc) if they dont like our music? :)

  • He's lip synching here, it sounds like the record

  • A band that came out of Hull brilliant band in the 80's another band that came out of Hull was Beautiful South (Paul Heaton lead singer of both) Beautiful South started in a little pub called The Grafton down Grafton Street in Hull.

  • privalage???

  • Whipmans bar Kelso wi the video juke box, lets get wrecked battle cry!!! life on the giro - where did it all go wrong!!!!

  • the bassist is Fatboy Slim

  • demise my arse ffs at least b south could fill 2 greatest hits albums ,,and never hang a dj once , by the way i`ll bet u morrisey sucks loads of cocks like yer dads u twaT

  • Is the lead singer lip synching ?

  • Yup. Definitely.

  • on TOTP, the singers usually lip psynched due to union regulations and some awful technical glitches at one point, but the musicians were usually really playing the instruments

  • rubbish kyle,it was all miming.but the kids didnt care,it was a privalage to mime on the biggest music show on earth.all the best bands were on it.....not the prodigy though

  • TOTP= "the biggest show on Earth"??? I don't think so...there's a country called the U.S.A. and most of us here have never even heard of this show, no offense "mate"...

  • did miles better than I want the one I cant have! although that was a good song...

  • I dont' believe it was ever promoted as a single, however the album it was part of went to #1 in the UK.
