  • The guy with the glasses (at around 3:21) is Warner Oland, fresh off his defining role as Al Jolson's father in "The Jazz Singer" and on his way to becoming Charlie Chan.

  • This is pure magic!

  • was this Cohan's only flm? Any others? amazing to see him...and ironic that Jimmy Durante, the Schnoz, famous for his big nose, wasn't even Jewish!

  • His speech was a lot more compelling than those of today's candidates.

  • Well good example how campaign Bovine Scatology is nothing new. I'm waiting to hear someone say "CHANGE WE CAN ALL BELIEVE IN".

  • Why won't you mention his name? Copyright nonsense? How long has he been gone?

  • Cohan did 5 movies as an actor. Only two in sound, this one and one in 34'. I do believe it was called 'The Gambler'. So yes, this is very rare.

  • thanks for posting

  • I'm just curious, if this is so rare, how did you get it? is it just a clip you have or the whole movie, I'm not being rude, I'm just fascinated by what people manage to post on you tube, thanks for this, it's beautiful

  • How is this a "rare" clip? Its on YouTube for crying out loud, for ALL the world to see.

  • what a jerk!

  • Um, it is a joke. Get a sense of humor and lighten up, for crissake!

  • are you realy that stupid??

  • "I'll go in this door and know the reason why." LOL.

  • Jimmy Durante is truly an American treasure, a great man. He was truly a natural. His acting ability is something that truly cannot be learned. Either one has it, or one does not. I love his expression when he's holding those tickets. He used to say on television "Ah, cha, cha, cha, cha." The world lost a great one in 1980.

  • I don't think Jimmy Durante's nose was that big, it looks quite good. George M. Cohan doesn't look anything like the actor who played him in Yankee doodle dandy. Cohan was truly one of the great American music geniuses. I am glad this video exists, because it shows the real Cohan, he's frankly not in many videos.

  • "The actor who played him in Yankee Doodle Dandy"--you mean James Cagney, who was absolutely perfect for the part?

  • Interesting that in 32 a movie would have some black guys as delegates, as well as Hawaiians, and with the cavalrymen there is one Mexican guy among them.

  • perfect

  • did I see Edward G. Robinson in a cameo? Maine-iacks... lol

  • This film inadvertently shows the histrionically-psychotic roots of American political ideology and leaves no mystery as to why America is now so Completely FUK'D UP today!

  • I wonder what then President Hoover thought of this film.

  • while watching "The Scent of a Woman" Pacino quoted Durante's "Did you ever have the feeling you wanted to go" I found this wonderful clip...

too bad that the name brings to mind Dubya's British poodle

    thanks perfectjazz78!

  • Cohan/Durante in '08!!

  • Does anyone have a copy of this film (THE PHANTOM PRESIDENT?)

  • This is from Cohans only film, THE PHANTOM PRESIDENT: its the same story as the film DAVE. Cohan plays the song and dance man and double for the President. TNT used to play this in the 70's!

  • What a great time capsule. This film was a great technical achievement when you realize that "talkies" were born only four years prior in 1928. I love Cohan and Durante. That's Hoopi and Hawaiian was still far from statehood. Thanks for posting.

  • Wow! Was that Sol Hoopii on the Hawaiian guitar?

  • He certainly looks like the photos of him on Google Images.

  • I'm voting for Blair!

  • Great clip Ned, thanks Regards, J.

  • How apt. "political conventions" are still a waste of time as we all know the delegate nominated before hand with TV ......our poscess is just as dated as the film.....
