Algren is America. God Damn, make this man the saint of Chicago. He is pure genius as is Richard Yates; screw the film of Revolutionary Roads. Read the book people!!!! Education is waiting for you at the library. Librarians you are the shit :)
Algren hit the nail on the head, what he wrote in the 1940s, capturing the character of Chicago, remained true in Wicker Park till the mid-1980s before migrating to Humboldt Park and West Chicago.
Outstanding job! I've watched this video a thousand times and will watch it a thousand more. You really captured the man's spirit. The stuff between 1:25 and 2:35, and from 3:35 to 4:25 is amazing. Algren was a true prophet.
Great job! Your tribute catches the mood of Algren's best work. I wonder - what would he make of the city today? Wicker Park and Bucktown full of Yuppies, Richie Daley on the throne pleading his innocence. Where is the new Algren? Does anyone these days know Chicago as well as he did, and care enough to tell the truth? We always need a voice willing to point the finger at the suits.
i miss home so much chicago is the greastest city ever. we got east west south flavor mixed up and churned into are way of life. Algren makes chicago sound how its suposse to be a hustlers dream and a working mans city
Neon wilderness. Algren lived in the underground, in the filth, in the shitter, he never complained, he just hussled words and sentences, he praised chicago as it should be known. He took a walk in the wild side
Goddamn did this film make me miss Chicago. I lived there for eight hard, tough, glorious years that I wouldn't trade for anything. It reminded me of why I loved it and hated it at the same time. Chicago will never have another writer like Algren.
The best American writer of his generation.

Algren used language like a scalpel. He was such a great writer. He captures an entire city in about 20 words.
