Thing that bugged me about FC was how it ruined the Borg. Maybe the costumes were better in the movie, but to me the hints of their power and inhumanity was so much more compelling in their first couple of appearances on the TNG. Things started to get silly in the episode "The Descent," but their portrayal in First Contact managed to destroy all of their mystique. They were simply angry robo-zombies by that point.
In this scene Data also had the opportunity to kill the queen on the way to the computer, why didn't he just run over to her and snap her neck? Seeing as the death of the queen also kills the other borg as well?
Speaking of Data, for the longest time (when I was younger), I was always under the assumption that Data was a re-humanized (is that even a word?) borg
So it came as some shock to me when I discovered that he was, in fact, an android
@garamonde The Borg Queen is OK, but the movie is more about the first contact. And even so, she's way better than Soran or Sybok. At least her motivations aren't completely retarded.
@92chillwill True. The first contact part sort of took a backseat until the last 5 minutes of the film though. It was a nice way of having some other expectations of what might happen at the end, but the first contact aspect is much more interesting than the action that's going on, in my opinion it's just not that exciting.
@whateverwhocares2 please. gene was responsible for the first couple seasons of TNG. I can't stand those early episodes where all they do is self-congradulate themselves on how awesome being human is and how awesome star fleet it. I found it much more entertaining to explore human weaknesses or having 7 of 9 talk about how awesome it is to be borg.
@whateverwhocares2 no one in their right mind could ever say that seasons one or two of TNG were amazing. they took all the hokiest aspects of TOS, dropped the beloved characters, and went on a bland ego trip that made me ashamed to be human.
Season 2 wasn't that bad. I prefer Dr. Pulaski to Crusher, she seems more like a female McKoy. Crusher just seems too humane and emotional and womanly sometimes. Maybe that's just me.
Nope, you're a douche for calling someone else a douche for preferring different seasons of Star Trek than you. That's just obnoxious. And he's right anyway, season 1 was inconsistent and far lesser in quality compared to later seasons. I kinda like season 2 myself.
@whateverwhocares2 Roddenberry wasn't even responsible for the best movies in the series. They forced him out of creative control for Wrath of Khan on, and TNG got better after he stepped down. Then Berman fucked up Star Trek later.
@whateverwhocares2 Roddenberry has gotten way more credit than he deserves. It was Gene Coon who came up with the idea of the Federation, Starfleet, the Prime Directive, the Klingons, and the Gorn. Plus he wrote some of the most best episodes in TOS.
I think what I hated most of all about this one was:
1) Picard did seem very angry
2) I hate the way they portray the 21st century warp drive makers - the inventor and the whole "i just don't care" attitude
3) More trying to make data into a human
To be honest, I liked this one more than I liked a few of the other TNG movies. I think that ultimately the tv version doesn't translate well to the movie version. That's because there's a different audience with different expectations.
LOL maybe the point of the Sovereign class was to remove that flaw from the Galaxy class...must have been embarrassing to have the fucking flag ship taken out by a Bird of Prey.
Or maybe Braga and Berman just didn't give a shit like usual.
they closed the hatch obviously....and as for the emh, he wasn't exactly dead when the scene was over. he was still there to confuse them. data isn't human or an organic organsm he can't be turned into a borg easily... the queen was just fucking with picard, probably out of spit of being rejected before. data actually saves humanity by allowing them to pass before first, assuring a warp signature and first contact. if he failed to get to the green stuff first first contact would fail.
rocket was made of titanium, it would've been safe. they aren't at war with other factions at the time, it is stated that it is after a world war. Borg equipment was destroyed, it would take time to take over the ship to intitate a spacial fissure or whatever it was to travel back through time. Sending a message in the present works as a backup plan if they fail.
So Picard dreams about the Borg, can hear the Borg in his head, can listen to them and knows their tactics and secrets but suddenly doesn´t know that the Borg Queen and a few dozen Borg are on the ship till the middle/end of the film??
In a Voyager episode, it was revealed that the Borg also have communication devices that send messages across time as well as space. Like RedLetter said earlier about the Borg time traveling safely to Earth in the past, they could have just sent a quick e-mail to their brethren of whatever century they desired and had them make a quick detour to Earth to assimilate humanity. Problem solved. But if you think about it, this is pointless, as the whole Star Trek universe is a plot hole, anyway.
First borgships use artificial wormwholes to travel over long distances. They don´t need 70 years from delta to Alpha like poor Voyager. You are right about the scene with the doctor. Was imo only fanservice(gotta love that holodoc).About Picard and the Queen, they act strange´cause they love but still hate each other! There is no such thing like logic in them when they face each other. Its a deep desire of both to kill each other, while wishing to be together. Got it? But i still like this review
Uuuuhhh, no. Considering the Borg Queen is in charge of billions upon billions of drones in her Collective, a simple human emotion like love is a veeerrrry big risk to her rule. But then again, she can just jump dimensions and whatnot and continue her rule unscathed somewhere else. Her death scream was also pointless as she only came back two more times later on in Voyager to die again and again.
@Elfrunner First, the Borg Queen is still a woman with a very own identity, not just another drone! So "emotions" should be a common thing in her case, even if that makes her a flawed Borg Queen, it still makes sense(even though i never really liked the idea of a borg-queen). And which said voyager episodes are those you mentioned with the Borg Queen jumping through dimensions and communications devices to get in contact with Borg from the past? Never saw those episodes!
No, she stopped being a real woman thousands of years ago. If she's that horny, she could screw just about any being in the galaxy to sate her desires. According to her, humanity is flawed, weak, organic. Emotions would be viewed as a weakness, as it is from the perspective of any machine/cyborg in science fiction. Contradiction on her part! And besides, the Borg Queen was just a plot device to give the Borg an actual "face" to root against.
As for the device the Borg used to communicate through time, it is called a Temporal Transmitter. Watch the Voyager episode Timeless to see more on that. And the Voyager episodes that the Borg Queen appeared in are Dark Frontier, Unimatrix Zero Parts 1 and 2, and Endgame. You can see her in more than one incarnation.
How do you know how old the Borg Queen is and when she "stopped" being a real woman!? As far as i know, there are only rumors about the origin of the Borg, nothing more. And yeah, i know the epsiode endgame, i thought that was just another female drone who was happened to be the Borg Queen(like seven of nine, there are more female borgs than just the Queen). But i shall watch said episodes to see if i mist something important.
Perhaps you ought to pay closer to the episode next time. And her age was just an estimation, as it is known that the Borg were active in the galaxy before the last ice age on Earth. She also mentioned that she used to be an "organic", but evolved to include the synthetic. She said this in Star Trek: First Contact.
@Elfrunner How in the name of God does an organic evolve(as in by passing on "successful" traits to the next generation via reproduction) into a machine? That has GOT to be painful,
It can happen. Humans are in the process of doing it right now. As we grow to depend more and more on machines, we could eventually merge with them entirely and become cyborgs ourselves. When cybernetic prostheses become feasible, that'll pretty much be all she wrote. And about the Borg needing a Queen, it's not so different from how any other machine civilization functions; The Matrix films featured the singular A.I. consciousness and The Terminator films had Skynet.
@williamskidfears And why would the queen even be hitting on Data? That's not "Perfection" that's Perversion. So all the Borg have to be ignorant drones but the queen is the only one allowed to make stupid decisions?
While I get that about half the complaints are jokes to break up the serious critique in RLM reviews, I'd just like to point out that Dr. Crusher clearly shuts the hatch. You can see her do it in the side-by-side comparison shot just as EMH turns around. Just look at the far right.
Also, the explaination of the diversion was while other people used the hatch, so it didn't really eliminate the need for the diversion so much as give her something to do other than panic while others escaped first.
You missed the funniest crap in this movie. During the scene at the deflector dish, Picard sets down his phaser-rifle to operate a control panel, in zero gravity.
Second time I've watched this review now and I love it! Funny, articulate, well-structured, logical, insightful. Just brilliant! :) You and ConfusedMatthew are my favourite reviewers.
You're wrong about one thing - some of the time Crusher takes to explain the diversion is taken up with Nurse Ogawa and Lilly trying to back their fat asses into the jefferies tube. Maybe if they were in better shape, like Beverly, they would have been faster. Ooo yeah... we all know Beverly works out with Troy, and is pretty bendy, and..... fapfapfapfapfapfapfapfapfapfapfap...AHHHhhh
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
This review kinda sucked. The Star Wars ones were great though. Like most of the complaints at the end of this are just made up shit because you couldn't come up with real issues.
@darmokandgalad He was just starting making reviews. And I think he did a great review still. And like always, trekie fans are the worst, not the star wars fans, the trekies
Actually the stupidest thing about this movie was at the beginning when the borg send a ship. Just 1 ship. not 100 ships or the entire collective...nope, just one. Didn't even have shields either.
Plinkett's reviews are notable partially because of his in-depth knowledge of the subjects at hand, and their relationships with the original series/movies they were based on. For example he compares his reviews of Star Trek movies with the TV series, and compares the Star Wars prequels with the original trilogy.
I'm willing to bet he does not have that familiarity with the Twilight series, nor would he wish to.
Still, he did do Baby's Day Out, so I suppose it's a possibility.
I suppose there are two things that could be picked apart about Twilight compared to other things. Firstly, its relationship to established vampire mythology, but this has already been done to death (no pun intended) by other people.
The other is Stephanie Meyer/Twitards claim that Twilight is a better love story than Romeo and Juliet, or Pride & Prejudice.
But again, Plinkett doesn't strike me as the kind of serial killer who would be intimately familiar with William Shakesman or Jane Austen.
@brenrose Because there was no Borg Queen before this shitty movie came out. In the TV series, the Borg did everything collectively, even decision making.
I still to this day have never thought the queen was trying to kill PIcard and pull him down. I have always interpreted this scene as her trying to escape the same way Picard was, climb up which was the closest escape route. Picard is shaking and kicking her down as she's trying to get a foothold. She gets angry and desperate as she slowly gets consumed by the green gas. I don't know, that's the way I've ALWAYS seen this scene!
borg did send a messege back in time. in an episode of "Enterprise" the federation first sees the borg species when a small group of federation engineers are on an icy planet doing some kind of research and get assimilated but one engineer dies halfway through the process. at the end of the episode, it says the borg sent a messege to the delta quadrant, but it will take 200 something yrs. (the time from that episode to "First Contact")

@evildoctorbluetooth I was under the impression that both FC instances were the same; being a Paradox at that. As Seven of Nine said (something like), "The Borg go back in time to prevent First Contact, compelling the Enterprise crew to pursue them. The crew assists Zephram Cochrane in completing the Phoenix. The Phoenix succeeds and the Vulcans make First Contact. Paradox Fulfilled."
:10 RLM, it's actually pretty hard to set fuel on fire by shooting through it. First of all, bullets alone don't produce sparks, and secondly the fuel has to have the right oxygen mix to be able to burn.
@NerdilyDone Why shooting at a rocket would be bad.
First of, the bullet colliding the the metal of the rocket would, in all likely hood create a spark (Have you ever shot a metal practice target before with a 5.56, or .306 round... SPARK! Let alone the fact that she is "UNLOADING" a clip of what i would guess is unlimited ammo (Since she shot for like, 10, 20 seconds) at a ship made of METAL!
Second, rocket fuel is HIGHLY FLAMMABLE and HIGHLY OXIDIZED! hence the fact of its use in rockets...
@i13m Rocket fuel is often liquid oxygen, however as someone below said, the oxygen only burns when it is the right mixture. Also the hull of the rocket would easily block bullet impacts, as it is designed to withstand the immense heat and pressures of atmospheric exit and re-entry.
@LMTR14 - I had a hell of a time finding this piece of the review too. YouTube really needs to get its shit together when it comes to making it easy for people to find things and that includes comments. I hate getting a notification of a reply and then it takes me 10 minutes to find it manually in this random comment listing.
2:39 ... I never got this bit either lol. I mean, do a dance or tell a story?? Those are her suggestions? Because the Borg would obviously hang around while he did either of those?

Also, the explaination of the diversion was while other people used the hatch, so it didn't really eliminate the need for the diversion so much as give her something to do other than panic while others escaped first.

You missed the funniest crap in this movie. During the scene at the deflector dish, Picard sets down his phaser-rifle to operate a control panel, in zero gravity.
kirkkh 1 year ago 23
@kirkkh That's just typical Star Trek, which is prolly why RLM didn't mention it....

This review kinda sucked. The Star Wars ones were great though. Like most of the complaints at the end of this are just made up shit because you couldn't come up with real issues.

Actually the stupidest thing about this movie was at the beginning when the borg send a ship. Just 1 ship. not 100 ships or the entire collective...nope, just one. Didn't even have shields either.

could you make a twillight review?
wicNKWD37 1 year ago
@wicNKWD37
AnonymousDiv0 1 year ago
I suppose there are two things that could be picked apart about Twilight compared to other things. Firstly, its relationship to established vampire mythology, but this has already been done to death (no pun intended) by other people.
The other is Stephanie Meyer/Twitards claim that Twilight is a better love story than Romeo and Juliet, or Pride & Prejudice.
But again, Plinkett doesn't strike me as the kind of serial killer who would be intimately familiar with William Shakesman or Jane Austen.

@AnonymousDiv0 well I meant one where he talked about the terrible scripts.

my question is this: If Picard had been a Borg (& he had been), why then did he NOT know about the Borg Queen?!?
brenrose 1 year ago 2

(the time from that episode to "First Contact")

even246 1 year ago
@even246 1) It was not an ice planet. It was actually the Arctic (or Antarctic).
2) The episode was after First Contact.
3) Those Borg frozen in the ice were Borg that were left behind from First Contact.
4) The message to the Delta Quadrant was received some time during the 24th Century, explaining why the Borg invaded in the first place.

@RingSight91 wtf, before back in time fc or normal time fc?
evildoctorbluetooth 1 year ago

NerdilyDone 1 year ago
@NerdilyDone Why shooting at a rocket would be bad.
First of, the bullet colliding the the metal of the rocket would, in all likely hood create a spark (Have you ever shot a metal practice target before with a 5.56, or .306 round... SPARK! Let alone the fact that she is "UNLOADING" a clip of what i would guess is unlimited ammo (Since she shot for like, 10, 20 seconds) at a ship made of METAL!
Second, rocket fuel is HIGHLY FLAMMABLE and HIGHLY OXIDIZED! hence the fact of its use in rockets...
i13m 1 year ago
@i13m Rocket fuel is often liquid oxygen, however as someone below said, the oxygen only burns when it is the right mixture. Also the hull of the rocket would easily block bullet impacts, as it is designed to withstand the immense heat and pressures of atmospheric exit and re-entry.

@LMTR14 - I had a hell of a time finding this piece of the review too. YouTube really needs to get its shit together when it comes to making it easy for people to find things and that includes comments. I hate getting a notification of a reply and then it takes me 10 minutes to find it manually in this random comment listing.
