As sillybilly said, it's mainly about the emotion. Personally, I'm not fond of the reincarnation bits and things like that, although it made an interesting plot, but it was the tragedy which threatened to come, and how the viewer wondered how on earth the characters would escape the curse, and the loss and pain people experienced.
To me, Air rocked mainly because it was the first anime i had ever watched.
@GreatestMeisterStein, well said, i see where you are coming from SinanDira, but it doesn't take away the fact that it was really quite special and warm to me because it had some good messages aswell. It's not what it is, but how it makes YOU feel.

Winged women, ghost girls, magic, a lot of nonsense... there are better social animes out there than the junk of these two (except their unique drawing styles!).

But to other people they may be the greatest animes in history. It's all about opinion. If you say they both suck. Why don't you just say. To me they suck. Yes, this is a good way of thinking. But this is not completely a matter of personal opinion. I actually don't remember them very well so I wasn't very serious in that comment. But I remember few events such as the girl who disappearses in Air, the friend of the young girl with the long red hair. It was described as a very sad scene. But if you think about it, you will find that there wasn't a minimum amount of cause. Things went that way because the writer wanted so, there's no plot!
In an upper class anime work such as Grave of the Fireflies, you see that every part of the plot has a cause, or reasoning. But in Air, the writer doesn't reason anything, and does everything according to his own desire, which is simply ridiculous. That means that any character is threatened by disappearing while walking on the side of the road. In that way he has created a weak plot, even in a fantasy world.
The reason for her death was that Michiru had fullfilled her purpose as Minagi's friend after her mother forgot about her existance. Michiru wasn't real - she was created by the winged girl because Minagi had wished for a little sister. The story is longer, but there isn't enough space to type it. However, if you already admitted to not remembering them well, how can you make a decent argument?
Actually, I was 13 years old when I watched the series, therefore I may oppress it, especially because the way how I now look at things is radically different than then. I missed a fair amount of the plot. Forget it, I have to delete my opinion about Air, since it was made from a 13-year-old's perspective, while I am a different person now. I am serious!
But I can see the silliness in Clannad, I watched it 2 years later, argue me about this one.. :P
If you don't want to make arguments, don't post a troll worthy comment, then try to back it up. For not wanting to make an argument, you seemed pretty confident in yourself to say Air has no plot when no one was arguing back. Guess you're only good at defending your stance whenever nothing is going against you.
I've never watched Clanned, therefore I cannot debate it. However, since you seemed to think Air sucked because it has "winged people", I doubt your arguments will be very solid.

You are right. But I couldn't stop talking because it's my habit. My unreasonable opinion and the superficial facts and notices associated with it belong to my 13-year-old character (I am now 17), this fact was completely out of my mind.
I would like to watch the series again, I know that I will see things that I couldn't see last time. I am mostly going to achieve the same opinion, but happily reasonably this time!

I think Key does the best animes around, along with the music. Air is so beautiful and so is Clannad! The soundtracks just fit perfectly with them
