Now, the gladiatorial games is one huge exaggeration. It's often popuralized what kind of slaugther they were. That's not really true; the gladiators were usually well trained and they didn't die nearly as often as it is usually popularised.

And really how many even fought in those games were much less than people would die for other reasons

What I find meritorious is how the Romans managed to build one of the largest empires in ancient history and maintain it for 500 years. I am atleast thankful that they spread the civilisation that is now the base of th western world.
