  • my father was a classical singer ..a tenor....he love mario lanza ..how many times I heard that song when I was a young kid...amazing...I still love it and so also "Gaudeamus Igidur"...

for me the best tenor ever

  • Marvellous and I have loved this song since the first time I heard it. Cheers to one and all who love MUSIC as well as a good pint or two

  • or in modern vernacular: DOWN IT, FRESHERRRRR!!!!!!!!

  • Something many people today don't realize is that when The Student Prince opened in 1924, it was during prohibition. This song must have brought down the house!

  • Most musical plots are not plausible. It is realistic though, to be in a crowd of people and break into song. Its happened to me many a time.

  • @zufriedenheit11 Of course. About any realistic story involving people singing to one another would have to pertain to drinking. LOL

  • Don3comp's comment on the implausibility of the plot of The Student Prince whenever I open up the video which is often. The plot is implausible but so what. The show, in general, and this song, in particular, have no purpose other than to entertain and are wonderfully successful in that regard. "Drink, drink" is a rousing love song that brings joy to my heart and a smile to my lips every time I hear and sing it. 4CRG

  • I was in Heidleburg yesterday... and the summer performance is The Student Prince. Some ideas are timeless.

  • @wvirishrover31773 Do they still play this movie at the university?

  • this rocks!!

  • what about yer liver the doc said. it can look afteritself sez i

  • @telmac899 Ann Blyth played opposite Mario in 'The Great Caruso' a lovely film with some wonderful songs. You need some tissues at the end though!

  • Count Gregor -Richter-von Ostein's Favorite

  • lol when i meet my husband and he found out i had this song he laughed at me.mind you i was only 17 at the time in 1976. and even today i still listern to it , its such a jolly song to sing to when having a little tipple. well done and thank you for posting

  • hoo ever said the irsh people owe 900 billion please leave anois

  • I had to review this in ma music lesson xD

  • Who was the lass in the video? Ann Blyth? Stunning...

  • @telmac899 According to the movie cast list, I believe so.

  • @ChicagoSouthDan I checked further and yes, it is Ann Blyth.

  • @ChicagoSouthDan Cheers mate...thanks for taking the trouble to let me know. she was a bit of a looker eh?

  • @telmac899 Yes, and she's still around at 82. According to what I copied from wikipedia, she married James McNulty, brother of singer Dennis Day, in 1953. The couple had five children. McNulty died in 2007.

  • @telmac899 Your youtube home page lists your country as Antarctica. Were you making a joke? Or are you living at a science station there or something?

  • @ChicagoSouthDan Antarctica! Bloody hell mate, I must have been well oiled on Guiness when I did that! No, I'm an Englishman now living in South Florida and retired after 38 years in the Royal Navy...Life is good! (And a bloody sight warmer than Antarctica!)

  • The song was sung by Mario Lanza but the actor was somebody else

  • I sung this song, just like that, last night in my local bar. They threw me out.

  • I agree he lip synched it perfectly I have watched the movie lots of times and I can't fault it

  • I THOUGHT so! Folks, Check out Richard Anderson (AKA Oscar Goldman from the 6 Million Dollar Man) as Lucas, Karl Franz's buddy right next to him. Yeah, I'm THAT good. :-)

  • mainstream radio is far too restrictive with their music, everyone loves this sort of music. Even my cats and the cory fish's.

  • One of the great scores of all time. One of the great voices of all time.

I was a bluegrass musician and saw this movie 30-some years ago - and was forever hooked on opera and operetta!

  • Wow, love this song. It reminds me of an Octoberfeast once upon a time. cheers

  • drink more water.... :P

  • THE REAL STUDANT PRINCE.

  • Mario Lanza is great!

  • Thanks to the Mili Vanili School of lipsyncs, Edmund Purdom became famous 50 years ago.

  • i just love this

  • Hope they didn't drive after all this!

  • I remember when this movie came out, Lanza was replaced because he had gained a lot of weight due to his alcolism and his out of control eating habits. Lanza had really gotten out of control on the movie sets in his previous films so i think he was blackballed when this film was cast/. Too bad, he would have been fabulous in this movie.

  • Thanks for posting but I want more!

  • Edmund Purdom did a great acting on this beautiful movie. My favorite of all time. It's so sad that he's an underrated actor. RIP Edmund Purdom.

  • It always tripped me out to hear Lanza's voice coming out of someone else...the only reason I ever liked the movie when I was kid was the singing.

  • Great movie great song great voice

  • priceless!!!!! great talent

  • yeah drink your beer...finish up at the end of the night eating horrific fast food that you would normally avoid...head down the toilet when you get home and "soft cock" if you happen to have company, and the next morning try to get your dehydrated brain to remember what stupid things were said the night before..when it comes to beer the eyes are usally bigger than the belly.....having said all that however.....LETS DRINK !!!!

  • @louislungbubble Very true...funny.

  • This actor is an opera singer, but he is not singing in this movie it is Mario Lanza's voice.

  • @fiestyitalianchick

Yes according to the album notes (my mother had many Mario Lanza LP's) The producers wanted his voice, but he sang his best at a weight which did not look good on film.

I grew up watching any Mario Lanza film, whether on tv or that was played in theatres and I appreciate that my mother introduced me to this wonderful., amazing instrument that wa shis voice RIP Mom, and Mario

  • @fiestyitalianchick

what an insult to the actor/singer then.

  • brings back memories of this movie- see Mario Lanza in my mind's eye - excellent lip-synkin' tho'. It makes me want to join them, 'tho I don't drink!

  • Lovely!

  • When I was a very small lad, there was an old Mario Lanza in the record collection... the very threat of this album being put on the old Gramaphone would send me running to my favourite hiding place. But seeing this clip, I get it now. Very beguiling.

I still prefer Josef Locke's version though.

  • Thanks for uploading this video. This is my most favorite musical movie. I love Edmund Purdom & Ann Blyth. This was a very beautiful but sad love story. R.I.P.

    Edmund Purdom.

  • What movie is this from???

  • Comment removed

  • @USCCHRIS0476 Student Prince (1954), with Ann Blythe and Edward Purdom. Lanza didn't get the acting part but my God... he should of. You should also check out "Gaudeamus Igitur" from the same movie.

  • what a w onderful voice, taken from us too early like too many others in that generation.

  • Can't tell me this is an Octoberfest/St. Paddy's day song

  • Who sing this song?

  • @Skembo ...this song was actually sang by Mario Lanza and lip synced by Edward Purdom

  • Detractors often say that the main trouble with operetta is the lack of plausibility in the plots. Because of this scene, I think I see the problem; here you have male college students drinking lots of beer and flirting with a waitress. -Who came up with these things?- : )

  • @don3comp hahahahahaha!!!

  • I love this.

  • The miming waistcoat, note no duelling scar

  • povera ragazza....chissà che alito di birraccia ha il tizio

  • this was played at my family friends funaral :'( (L)

  • Comment removed

  • i know but it was his favorite song :)

  • Бухать, бухать.ю бухать!!!)

  • Superb film!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • The late Purdom did a good job with the dubbing. I had the later recorded version also he made a couple of years before he died of the student prince but this is best with his young voice in prime shape. Originally it was issued #LM1837 RCA Victor--- Mono recording.

  • She's a Katherine Jenkins look alikey.

  • I have heard that the original filiming of Mario Lanza (not this lip sinc imposter) doing scenes in the Student Prince still exist. In fact, the original one that drew critisim from the director is supposed to be amazing. Anyone know how to get a copy of that and post it?

  • Mario's voice is EAR CANDY.

    So wild, so strong.

The girl in the clip shook her head, but must have been melting & weak at the knees.

Imagine having Mario holding you and singing directly to you....lucky girl.

  • That's not Mario, though - it's Edmund Purdom, miming!

  • Cheers sterioroid, so it was Edmund ?

I have The Student Prince 12 inch vinyl record that was my parents, a long time ago. I've played it a lot in Australia. In the video clip, it looks like they are all getting pissed...Ha....I'll shout you a beer for your help.

  • @Jaguar67EtypeXKE

31st January is the singer's birthday, so Aussies will get to drink a toast to the great voice before some of his other fans do. Cheers, cobber!

  • Mario Lanza. A voice like the voice of God. Such an inspiring voice for so many. Thank you God.

  • My dad used to sing this song and sounded like Mario Lanza...hearing Mario sing reminds me of my dad...a good man taken too soon.

  • When my father bought his stereo in 1958 this was the first stereo record he bought. He made us sit on the sofa and listen to the separation of brass and strings. God rest your soul Daddy, I miss you so, everyday.

  • so beautiful to hear you speak so lovingly of your Dad. What a beautiful memory to cherish. And how beautiful to visualize your Dad orchestrating all of you sitting to enable you to appreciate the music the way he did. Thank you for sharing. And may your father rest in peace.

  • CHAIMDAVID

Thank you so much for your kind words. You put tears in my eyes. Thanks for feelings me. On Nov 4 Daddy would have been 87. He as born the day King Tut's tomb was discovered.

He loved music, he was a master teacher, intellectual, poet, storyteller, romantic.. Please believe me when I say he's been gone 21 years and even now at 61 Nov 6th I am still MY DADDY'S LITTLE GIRL!,

  • To Daddy's little girl,

I'm so happy my words touched your heart. Your loving words and memories of your father touched mine as well.

Music is one the best medicines for everything; your father taught you well.

  • chaimdavid

    Greetings my friend,

The second stereo record Daddy purchased bought was Count Basie's APRIL IN PARIS. Whenever I hear it I am frozen and choked with tears. I have placed on my "bucket" list I must experience April in Paris personally before I leave my body. I would like for you to listen to this magnificent recording. It's simply marvelous my friend. I hope you will, if you do or already have please let me know, will you?

  • Thanks for the advice; I could 'feel' your emotion listening to this recording.

So you should 'plan on it'. On the main boulevard of Paris, the Champs S''Ellyese (not sure of the exact spellling) plan on plugging in your headphones and while looking at the magnificent buildings of Paris listen to this song your Dad loved. It will be worth every penny it cost you and much more!!! Book it soon!! And have a great time : ))))))

And my advice; make reservations for next April!!

  • You can tell that this guy isn't doing the singing. His mouth isn't open enough for his C. No one was as good as Lanza, except Pavarotti.

  • I will admit, considering how most people these days onstage aren't really good at hiding their lip-synching, I'd say this one was pretty much raised to an art form, if that. It was a pretty good act.

  • Good movie. Beautiful song . excellent tenor and chorus...Lets drink ! drink! drink!

  • ah this the film "old heidelberg"

  • One of the all time best drinking songs.

    Let's drink!

  • Hey, guys? This isn't Mario Lanza.....it's Howard Marsh as "Prince Karl Franz". WHO said it was Mario?

  • Mario Lanza ... Prince Karl (singing voice)

Mario Lanza was the SINGING voice...

check out the info on IMDB..

  • Yeah thats Lanza's voice for sure!!

  • Hello-it was really not Mario Lanza-it was a later performance-but-this voice was also good and clear-like in this year-because the "Student Prince"comes from the USA-a fantastic yoice!

    With compliments from Heidelberg

  • It's Mario alright, I have Mario's Greatest hits LP with this song and this version on it.

  • hahaha, I just picked that LP up for 56 cents the other day!

  • ..or was that Edmund Purdom as Prince Karl Franz ??

  • Yes, the prince

  • a huevo a chupar tooodos mamadorrrrrrrr¡¡¡¡¡

  • loved this operetta when i was a boy...

  • ...Of course, now he'd be booked on two counts of sexual harassment, and get sensitivity-training, LOL, modern life is for assholes...

  • I have the entire filmography and discography from mario lanza, nelson eddy, jeanette macdonald documentaries, TV presentations, audio and video concerts, also of other great singers like Mario del Monaco, Corelli, Gigli, , Schipa, kraus, caruso, borling, tagliavinni and many more interested write to me

  • That guy had to be the best lip-sinker EVER!!!!!!!!!!!! I LOVE this movie.

  • Everyone was a lip-syncher back then in those musicals. There was no other way, you could not balance sound on the fly.

  • @SoNotTelling He was pretty good alright - have you seen Larry Parks in the Jolson Story and Jolson Sings Again?! As a child I thought he *was* Al Jolson! Mario Lanza is my favourite though - such a shame he didn't play this role - but Purdom was very good - shame he wasn't in more high profile things. Having said that, it's very hard not to keep staring at Cathy... Absolutely beautiful.

  • @SoNotTelling i agree no millie vanillie...and what a great song.....

care free with class...lesson of the day......

  • please where can I "the student prince" film download?

  • I think what makes this song so good, (in general, not just this recording) is the pure joy of it. Mario just elevates this song.

  • @bboymasochist When I go into the bar I beat my fist on the bar and yell."Bring me a tankard of ale and a wench.:"

  • What a simply magnificent drinking song this is and Lanza's voice is without peer. The combination here is glorious. Thanks so much for putting together this wonderful video.

  • To marty, strickland, bird, fritz, McCarten, the kaduncii, sir kenney, chuckles, quitaville, reily and co, copter, graves the JMU krewe, etc. etc.

    love and barfs

  • Even if you don't "drink!"...this guy makes you want to :) Great song!!

  • The guy in the back with the glasses who isn't singing with the crowd and just gawking at the Prince always seems to catch my attention. It's like he doesn't fit in, somehow...

  • balletamie: thank you for all the works you have done to provide the information about this song. much appreciated. i am sure a lot of people loved this song and wanna to know the history of it.

  • God Mario. God.

  • Was mich mal interessieren würde, warum singen die in Englischen Liedern so oft eins zwei drei vier, statt one two three four(nicht nur wenn es sich reimt, sondern auch zum anzählen des takts...)

  • This is one of my all time favourite songs . I watched the movie when I was a kid and instantly loved it. My dad use to play the LP every sunday.

  • Bierjunge!

  • hängt!

  • hängt doppelt!

  • auf welchem haus wird das dann ausgetragen?wäre gerne der Unparteiische....

  • he is gorgeous

  • This is what happens when the music majors drink.

  • LOL!

  • I loved the movie and when I heard this song I fell in love with the voice. Mario Lanza had such incredible vocals.

  • search for... - The Muppet Show - Drinking Song... on youtube for a funny version of this song =)

  • The greatest! Turn up the volume! Don't ever retire this from youtube

  • Awesome! I wish we did this at the school I go to!

  • Haha screw bottled water.. this song is about beer, god damn it ^_^

  • The scene was used in the last few years as part of an advertising campaign for Carlsberg Beer, which was clearly seen in the movie! The tag line is "worth waiting for"

  • considering the fact tht it was made in 1954, the "Lip-synching" was excellent! What a voice Mario Lanza had.

  • Timeless rendition of a timeless classic.

Sigmund Romberg gave us so many glorious melodies...seldom heard nowadays, alas.

Thank you for posting this wonderful scene from THE STUDENT PRINCE! Cheers!

  • I remember seeing this when I was a small boy and thought they were drinking water! Happy memorys

  • Aww, yot5000,

Your comment that you thought they were drinking water brings a smile. Goodness only knows what was in those tankards. Apple cider? Ginger ale? Something (ahem) harder? I always wondered what masqueraded as "the real thing" in movie beverages. But then, considering the "takes" many movies needed sometimes, guess the drink would have to be something tame. No spirits...because you don't want befuddled singers bumping into the scenery!

  • I recall John Wayne saying that the cowboy 'whiskey' was actually cold tea(!). Ever hear the story about the first drinking scene in Ice Cold in Alex, starring John Mills et al?

  • Cold tea! How offputting is that!

I've never seen the film Ice Cold in Alex starring John Mills so am not familiar with the drinking scene in it.

  • Well there's a scene at the end after they've beaten the desert, where J.M. buys them all a beer and drinks his in one go before their's are served. Apparently, the scene was shot early in the morning - before breakfast! And the cast keep making deliberate mistakes to force re-takes. So the story goes, John Mills was absolutely rat-arsed by the final take! :-)

  • Cute story, Factnotfictionpeople.

I'll have to keep an eye out for the film. John Mills is a wonderful actor!

  • John Wayne was right, what they drink on films looking like whisky is in fact tea. At least here it is. I have a person of family working on films and he confirms that. Can you imagine if it wasn't what would happen especially to actresses but also actors after a long day of shooting with endless repetitions of the same take? A tragedy for certain...

  • I know - its no wonder they grimmace so often after knocking back a full glass of 'Red-Eye in the saloon!'

    Cold tea tastes vile! LOL

  • I agree cold tea I detest but hot tea is wonderful. We do drink a lot a coffee over here, tons of it in fact, much more than tea but I for one love it. On the other hand I do not like liquor at all and do not drink it, instead I drink a cup of coffee of two every single morning and one or two cups of tea every afternoon :-)

  • it never worked edmond purdom and lanzas voice

  • You can find a DVD of this movie on EBAY. I checked... it's there.

  • Many thanks for your valuable information.I'll get it when I visit Vancouver next year.

  • Once saw a performance of The Student Prince outdoors at the castle in Heidelberg. It was a remarkable evening.

  • Wowzer, Balletamie, you hit the jackpot with this one. THANK YOU for posting this!

  • Thank you for having this on here! I randomly was reminded of this movie earlier tonight, and this is one of my favorite songs from the musical. Squee~! Lanza's voice is pure magic ^o^

  • What dress?

  • I'm looking for DVD of this movie, but in vain.

  • wasn't it Lanza singing here in the audio but not on camera?

  • Yes, Lanza singing.

  • god I hate ann's dress...just plain awful...

  • Great! You take Ann's dress. I'll take Ann (without the dress!)

  • I'd carry a barrel of beer from here to the moon if I could sing like that. Haven't heard this since I was ten years old, but it is just as sharp and full of punch as ever. Thanks very much for posting this one.

  • Ahhh, lovely, isn't it?

Even if you are not a prince, you can still live these moments in German (and Swiss and Austrian) fraternities, the celebrating, sword fighting, drinking.... The best years of my life....Go see yourself, it is worth it.

  • Has anyone noticed?? Men sound SO GOOD WHEN THEY SING LIKE MEN.Take that, John Lenin.

  • listen to sherril milnes, robert merrill, gordon macrae, vic damone....

  • Gordon MacRae Did an excellent job of this score as well. I have the Cd his voice is very powerful but with less operettic tone. :)P

  • Absolutely marvelous sync to a marvelous voice. Purdom nailed it, as did Lanza!

  • Blame mayer. Purdom was capable but mayer demanded to use lanzas voice.Mario was a drunk and womaniser and he died young but god i loved his voice He will always be no 1 to me

  • I think Purdom did a great job in this movie. He was often critised for being rather wooden, but this worked to his advantage in this film. I'm old enough to remember the movie's orginal release, and the press were very complimentary about Purdom's lip syncing.

  • Have to agree with you. Eddie Purdom's lip synching was truly excellent.

  • i like others i too would like to know where i can get the whole movie i've tried for ages but to no avail

  • I like the movie but I cant get past Mario's voice with the actor lipsinking. It is too bad Mario could not have worked it out and got along with the director to be in the movie. I think he would have been adorable with Ann like in Caruso.
