The next morning the headline on the sports page of the now defunct Los Angeles Examiner read, "The Lakers 4-Give and 40-Get". I still have the news paper.
Don't get me wrong, I'm thoroughly enjoying watching this beatdown. But where exactly Eddie Johnson foul anyone on the putback at 2:07? I think the refs were enjoying the tidal wave of points like everyone else.
unbelievable. a time where the lakers where likeable, and their fans ACTUALLY HAD CLASS. laker fans nowadays are fairweather fans, pathetic and classless.
@jabba212 The more things change, the more they remain the same. Another jealous fans who is envious of an iconic sports franchise and its fans. There's a shocker. Stop me if you have not heard that before. Dude, shake yourself. We Laker fans will try very, very hard not to lose any sleep over not being "likeable." The only thing more "pathetic" than reading the rants of another jealous basketball fan is like nothing at all. It must be a real bitch to be jealous and insecure, isn't it?
just a note, Derek Smith and Jerry Eaves played for the '80 Louisville NCAA champ team. Billy Thompson played for the '86 team. I think Sacramento have a Louisvile thing going for a while with Eaves, Smith, later Ellison, and McCray
I dont see the 2010 Lakers beating this squad. Scott cant guard Kobe. But who is is gonna guard Magic?! So Scott would score all day while Kobe/Artest double Magic. Plus they had Coop 2put on Kobe in crunch time. Worthy would have mauled Artest. Gasol could take Green offensively. But Green would punish Gasol on the boards. Magic would post Fisher all day. Elderly Kareem drawing Bynum out 15ft on the skyhook, plus boarding. Other than Kobe going off for 50+every game, 80s era Lakers pwn ANYONE.
Funny to see Magic all smiles and joking now. When that guy played, he was a no-mercy, assasin with those dimes. Same thing with Worthy. These guys were all business, but they made it so fun for the fans.
@WOCEinyourgrill that is the greatest announcer of any sport all time Mr. Chick Hearn aka goldenthroat who coined every phrase you know in b-ball....alley opp slam dunk etc...
I just happened to be in Los Angeles when this game was played but was unable to attend. The Los Angeles Herald sports page headline read, " Lakers 4-give and 40-get"
Calling them pathetic is pathetic on your part. Although they got slaughtered, they were playing one of the greatest teams ever. They were actually pretty talanted (Thorpe, Theus, etc.), but just didn't have teamwork or a good coach.
By the way (I doubt this will surprise anyone), this was Phil Johnson's last game as the Kings' head coach. The Lakers literally ran him out of California with this performance.
what was the final score of the game? i mean, forty points in the first quarter- thats no record, but its still a lot. 12 minutes into the game they were up by 36 points!
This happened again in 1997 against the Mavs. LA held them to 2 pts in a quarter, both at line. It was a generous whistle at that, right at the end of the quarter. I believe that another team had since tied the record of 2 pts.
I had heard about this game years ago, and I never thought I'd see it in action. Absolute domination. Twenty years later, the Dallas Mavericks would break the Kings' (and two other teams') dubious record by scoring two points in the third quarter. Ah, futility.
None of the starters played 30 minutes, tho. The disparity between that years Lakers and Kings squads was pretty much as big as that quarter indicates, much worse than the one that exists between the current teams.
The Kings lost every single game they played at The Forum from 1975 to November '92.
Wonder who won that game? XD
