Wait wait wait. Earl was born in 1944, and in this scene, he is portrayed as a Senior in high school, debating on whether he will go to College, so Earl is 18 here. That would make the setting of this scene sometime in 1962. We didn't start sending Americans to Vietnam until 1965. Earl was 21, when the Vietnam War officially started. So I don't know how his friend is going to Nam yet. This scene doesn't make sense.

@StonewallJackson26 Actually believe it or not the US was sending troops to Vietnam long before that. Quite a few Soldiers who fought in WW2 were being sent over, starting in the early 1950s. I was told by one of my teachers who fought in WW2 and had friends go to Vietnam during that time period.
