Look if a person is terminally ill and they are in intense pain why should we force them to wait until they die? The term " death with dignity" always sounded like bullshit to me but I sure can understand if a person wants to die a painless death. If the gov legalized euthanasia the medical community could step in and help individuals end their suffering. We would not have to worry about one doctor presuring his patient to commit suicide because we can mandate second opinions before death.

If you have experienced the true worst feeling that exists, DEEP depression, you know that is not truly a selfish act. Plus it takes great courage to commit suicide, think about it.

What's selfish is clinging to life tooth and nail when all quality has been extinguished and any hope of recovery has vanished. I believe that Dr. Kevorkian is a hero, one's life is one's own and it is a fundamental violation of one's rights to say that one cannot do as one wishes with one's own life, the most personal thing a person has, more personal that what goes on in the bedroom, which is protected. I have a question though: in the US do you study moral issues like euthanasia at school? In the UK we teach it in RE (which you aren't constitutionally allowed to teach in the US) and so my 15 year old pupils have been allowed to think about these ideas before they're in a position where it happens to them.

I think the only reason people oppose him is because they are missinformed. The propaganda against him claims that he's killing innocent patients. Everyone would agree that is against the law and morally wrong. But what he is really doing is giving the patient the entire decision. He's in a sense like a gun. He didn't decide whether or not to kill the person, his will didn't influence the decision, he was just there for the event that someone wished to stop suffering.

If I'm terminally ill, I'd like to have the option to end MY OWN LIFE. It's that simple.

I've suffered my father's agony as he slowly died of cancer -- he wanted to go out peacefully, but he was FORCED to be kept alive. I remember every night that I sat by his side, as he pled to me to end his pain.

Kevorkian provided a painless passing. Anyone who considers him a criminal hasn't lived with someone dear to him/her, someone suffering terribly. Shame on you all.

Maybe he's right about human rights and dignity. It will beinteresting to see if Oregon keeps the law. However, Kevorkian's moral and religious arguments make no sense at all. He is contradicting what most of the main religions and mdeical professions believe - that's why you can see them voting against during this brodacast. He used the same weak arguments to defend himself at the trial where he was convicted; at least his lawyer could make a good moral argument.

I just think Kevorkian isn't the best example to give someone dignity. He's had some strange ideas in his time and some dodgy 'mercy killing' in motel rooms. 2 of his patients had no evidence of disease, let alone terminal disease, at their post mortem.

In my opinion there is nothing wrong with what he did. People came to him wanting him to end their suffering. Hospice did the same thing he did they just drag it out longer. They give people lethal doses of drugs to help with the pain, those drugs are what ends up killing the patient the majority of the time not the illness.
