what a silly translation! The "paradis" in French is - in this case - the gallery... and "Les enfants du Paradis" are "The People of the Gallery" or "the Gods"...
@ardentepatience Certainly not in standard French - it's a colloquialism that the movie itself describes. Don't know it's it's accurate to early 19th century Paris but that's beside the point.
