I don't understand the point of shooting at a TV screen with a camera when there are direct captures that could be done.

"When they had the light off..." That's for shooting it. But if you're shooting it, you have to also find a way to get it to the computer. If you know how to capture it to the computer (hook your video camera up to the computer and then run the capture program), why wouldn't you know how to do it with another recording device like a VCR or DVD recorder, which would also require capturing to a computer?

Yeah, true; it often can take a different kind of cable, or even input to the computer. Well, for future reference, look on the inputs to your computer and see if any of them say anything like just "video in" (for analog video) or "analog video in" or "composite video in" or "CVBS video in" "s-video in" or "y/c video in" or "component video in." Those would take care of VCRs and DVD players/recorders.
