The man of the hour, though not showed ,that much power ,how he was hitting the chief with that type of cardboard ukelale(sorry, can't spell that word)..Even so,the worst promos back then, are still much much better than today's promos..
thanks for the video post.. was good to see Superstar and H.C Peter Maivia. I'm sure he would be really proud of his grandson 'The Rock'... miss the old school wrestling days!
Graham in real life LOVED Peter Maivia. He wrote it in his book. In their title fight at MSG, Graham told Peter "whatever you want to do in this match (short of givving the title whcih he can't), it was up to peter. and if u watch the match, Billy let Peter carry the whole match. Graham was a very giving wrestler in the ring. Bladed for everyone and rarely pinned people clean. He didn't care. He hated Mil Mascaras - who he thought was a prima donna "no seller"
This was when wrestling was pure, without the T&A and completed with 100% whoop ass chemistry. The magic is over as Bobby the Brain put it, and he is so damn right.
Man, that Ukelele was almost as tough as the late High Chief Peter Maiavia himself. It took Superstar Billly Graham three goes to break it over the High Chief's head, and we all remember how hard his head was lol !!!. I love looking back at these Legends of WWE. They laid the foundation for what sports entertainment is today
@danteras23 well, macmahon said ten years ago that the WWE isnt about wrestling anymore. It hasnt been about wrestling since the early 80's. He said that the wrestlers are of a secondary concern to him. His real business is making movies and products for people to buy and they do buy them.
Great stuff! A year before this happened, I remember Superstar losing a match to some mexican with a lace up mask, then having the nerve to cry like a baby because his face was all bloody- accusing the other guy of "spilling holy blood!"
The WWF made 2 monster mistakse letting Backlund & Bruno beat Billy. the fans actually started to like Billy and he would have became a fan favorite all on his own. Vince even admitted if Billy would have stayed the champ, pro wrestling would be a diff biz today. he also admitted Billy was years ahead of his time.
This was the angle they used to set up the matches Maivia and Graham had in various WWWF venues. One of the advantages to having a "heel" as champ in those days was that you could use similar angles to set up a program with a hugely popular "face". They did stuff like this with Strongbow a lot, so he could feud with Waldo Von Erich, The Spoiler, Tanaka & Fuji, Buddy Wolff, Greg Valentine, Lou Albano, Spiros Arion and others.
Absolutely loved this. Superstar was my hero. We waited every week and hoped the Superstar would appear. 20 years too soon? Not for me he is the greatest.
I remember watching this on TV as a kid. You can see how popular Graham was back then...getting a lot of cheers and hand shakes from the fans (as a heel). They had to set up angles like this just to get the fans to hate him.
@Reg197844 I think that one of the biggest mistakes that the McMahon's ever made is not turning Graham face. I can't imagine what it was like to endure Backlund as champion for almost six years.
@RevDarkehorse According to Ken Patera's shoot interview, the reason Vince Sr. went with Bob Backlund as champ was because he wanted someone he could control, something he couldn't do with Bruno Sammartino.
Backlund was a great wrestler but he lacked personality. Vince could have never sold him to a nationwide audience when he took over the WWF and planned for expansion.
@TheJohnnyCotts Actually, the original plan was for Backlund to change his gimmick to a McMahon family member, dye his hair black and be a heel where he'd eventually drop the title to Hulk Hogan. But Backlund didn't want to do it; and only wanted to wrestle those who looked like legitimate wrestlers than entertainers as was Hogan. So instead, Vince had Backlund drop the title to the Iron Sheik and then phase out after Hogan subsequently beat the Sheik.
@lakebay972 I find that a lit-tle hard to believe. Back then (when kayfabe was still in full effect), Vince was just an announcer on-screen - he wasn't "Mr. McMahon". Besides, Backlund had been there as champ for years - it wouldn't make sense to jump-shift him THAT much. Turn him heel, maybe. Complete character overhaul, no.
I always heard Sheik was the one to take the title off Backlund because they wanted someone who could legit fight - just in case Backlund got other ideas.
@RevDarkehorse - I agree and that is the defining reality and moment, that breaks the myth that the McMahons were super smart. What a dumb ass move on the part of Sr.
AAAAAAAAAAAAAH HA HA HA HA HA HA That chicken flopping Maivia does at 2:04 was so stupid looking, that even though I know it's fake, I am glad he was the one getting the beatdown.

They used this same angle with Maivia when he was in the AWA. Only instead of Superstar Graham, it was Angelo "King Kong" Mosca. Mosca was mean.
