I'm going to be in a musical in May and have to dance to it. Weird, I'm 65 and remember this song as a kid. Simpler days when people didn't get their panties in a twist over EVERYTHING!
When I was a kid, in the mid-90s, my dad kept a cassette tape of this song in his car. My best friend and I used to listen to it every time we got in the car, and shout the chorus out at the top of our lungs. Very fond memories.
@batulefou And the russians made the title Tzar.. meaning Caesar.. and the Germans (holy Roman empire) had Kaisers. also meaning Caesar. The Byzantine were the last true link, because they were the eastern roman empire, and the ruling families of the Byzantines were relative to those of ancient rome.
@batulefou Regardless of who was in control Constantinople, They were not the bloodline descendents of the Romans. The turks simply conquered the last remnants of a dieing 2,200 year old Legacy of Roman Rule.
@RothrilSectolith Absolutely, the importance and significance of the Byzantine Empire is severely underplayed today. The era of mixed Levantine cultures are sadly long gone.
I miss u Istanbul I fell in love not with only a human but a country I connected with it like I never did before in my life for the first time u felt alive living there made me appreciate so many things I saw good qualities of human beings. If I say that living in aus is the same I would be lying Istanbul is my home even I'd I am not from there . I miss the ppl whether poor rich or ugly I liked / loved their kind hearts hospitality ! I muss the trees the walks with my gf the beautiful sea breez
one day my baby wandered into the greenhouse but we couldn't get her because of all the junk. so we put on this record and my maw maw pulled out all the stuff.
I grew up with this song, because my parents loved it. The second AC:R came out, I wouldn't shut my mouth. I'm still singing this song to my friends, most of whom don't get the reference. This is a freakin' classic!
You've got to love these lads for getting their facts right;) Seriously, great homage to this marvellous and myth-enshrouded city that I hold very dear to my heart!Sevgilerimle
@mraellis So they DO reference it in the new game? I'm glad. Ever since they said in brotherhood that Constantinople was the next location I've been OBSESSED with this song.
I prefer They Might be Giants, but I still LOVE this version. They have totally different energies, making them worth enjoying at totally different points in time.
My friend won a free roundtrip to Istanbul next year. What time span should be visit and what events should he attend if he likes art, music, history and culture AND/but only speaks English. He is Christian and has an Armenian last name via his Dad.
Makes me sad that the Americans are so uneducated. First of all the city was created by Greek-Roman Emperor Constantine, the city's historic name is Constantinople and it the official name was Constantinople until 1453, Turkish delight? are the song-writers serious? Everything in Constantinople has Greek touch in it, starting from architecture to general culture. And believe me in 1920 Greece was outside Constantinople ready to re-capture it. The Americans really ought to read some history.
@GiratinaOriginAwakes First: The Four Tops were from Canada. So quit hating on Americans for things we did not do. Second: If you are relying on pop songs fro historical accuracy... well that is a serious flaw on your part. I use Wiki. Third: I believe they are making a pun when they say "Turkish Delight." It references the Ottoman Empire/Turks and a delicious confection. Fourth: Thanks for your wonderful historcal snipet about the city!
@husker7141 Like it or not, that is the truth, and if it wasn't for the Greeks, Europe would've been captured by arab-muslim-brown skinned races, the US wouldn't even exist, such disrespect shows what a retard race the Americans are :), husker you're not an intelligent person one can tell by your comment, now please fuck off and stop trolling, go outside, get a job, a girlfriend finger yourself or something.
@GiratinaOriginAwakes 1st: I am not Husker. Husker gave you a compliment. 2nd: I was not trolling. Like you, I was clarifing a discrepancy. You blamed "Americans" for being unedcated. I assumed you meant "people from the United States," so I pointed out that the Four Tops are not from the US, but from Canada. No disrespect meant at the time. 3rd: I then thanked you for your input about the history of that region. How does that come off as trolling? 4th: My wife would dislike it if I had a GF.
Çok güzel! The arrangement (campy jazz orchestra) actually reminds my of music from classic James Bond movies...they should have worked this one into "From Russia with Love"! BTW, the name "Istanbul" derives from the Greek phrase "εις την Πόλιν" or "στην Πόλη" [istimbolin], both meaning "in the city" or "to the city," Constantinople having been popularly called "The City" during Byzantine times.
