i was only 4 years old, all i can remember is my mama holding me in our basement. it was so dark and loud, we didnt think we would make it, all we had was our love. i will always always remember black friday.
I was 13 when the tornado hit Edmonton. Thank god we were camping and not near Edmonton at the time (i think about a few hrs away)...but we had major thunderstorms, lightning and hail at our camp site from the effects of the tornado. But we came home to the destruction..and our home was not too far from the refinery area the tornado hit....if it had come down just a few blocks west from where it did our house would have been gone.
This famous footage shows the tornado forming. What you are seeing is suction vortexes marching around in a widening circle (imagine being there and seeing that in person). From the middle of the circle there slowly and menacingly lowered a gigantic funnel cloud, rounded underneath. The section vortexes came to earth and danced around each other before being absorbed into the funnel cloud, which quickly became an awesome wedge slicing across the city.
I was luckily oversees in France; however, even though I wouldn't want anyone to get hurt, have their property damaged, or put myself or anyone else in harms way... I would have found it very interesting to be in the thick of it to experience what a tornado is like up close!?
my mom used to live in edmonton. she told me that it was so hot and sunny in the morning! by time it was 1:00, it started to overcast! and when it was around 2:00, she was driving home from work and the rain came down extremely heavy (you couldnt even see like 6 feet infront of you outside! then she heard on the news a tornado touched down and destroyed evergreen trailer park (i forgot what it was called)! i've lived in edmonton all my life - was around during the tornado but have never seen this kind of detail - i thought it was one funnel cloud, but it actually looks like 4!
The deep dark scary cloud went over my house, blown down my window screen and some how my garage door was opened. I ran out to close the garage door. The wind was so strong but the worst was the scary dark cloud
hey you know that theres all these really big storms and weird clouds forming in the countrys and open fields what if they are working up to edmonton for another hell of a big storm
This tornado was my first memory, I was too young to be scared. Wasn't too close, maybe 3 miles or so. Still, It ripped off our screen door and most of our lawn furnature and anything left outside.
I was 11 years old when this happened. I had just come home from the playground and looked up at the sky - I still remember how fast the clouds were moving in the sky, I can picture it like it was yesterday. I was home alone and scared to death. My dad was at the bar (lol) and couldn't get home because the door was held shut by the wind. Mom was at work & my brother was at a friends place. I SCREAMED at him on the phone to get home, but he couldn't. Scariest day of my life. By far.
My dad lives in edmonton now I am sooo lucky that he lived somewhere else. When I moved to edmonton (live in barrie now) there was a tornado warning which was freaking cause I was going to bed I did`nt know if my mom and dad where gonna be alive when I woke up so we all slept to my dads bed to wake and findout the tornada did`nt touch down
omg my mom was like 10 or 13 when this happend and her and my g-ma and my uncle and went down the there basment becasue they lived in sherwood park and the tornado went trought there and it went right over her house and my g-pa almost got sucked in it but he got away
I live in Edmonton, near the Brookside Elementary School. Right now I go to Riverbend Junior High. I love Edmonton, but it could be better without the shitty weather.

This storm was the shitz ,I Was living in the northwest part of millwoods when it struck just remebering this gave me the shivers , coming home from millbourne mall in the biggest hailstorm in alberta history softball size hail completley shattering my car windows
Actualy Edmonton is a fair drive north of calgary , so it's around the midplains of Alberta. I think Canada's southernmost portion is southwestern ontario where I live , Havnt had an f4 here since barrie in the early 80's
My teacher had bought a brand new truck a few days before that tornado hit and he worked in the industrial part of Edmonton when the tornado hit so his truck was totalled.
I was about 3 years old when this storm came through. I remember it being scary, and having to sit in the basement with food while my parents watched the sky. We lived fairly close to evergreen at the time. it was pretty scary, i just remember it randomly getting pretty windy and dark but from there since i was three it's pretty much a blur. hah. Scary times though.
It looks like it came from a movie. Awsome angle. And yea, I wasn't born untill 1992 but my mom told me about the Barrie Tornado because we live just 45 minutes away. Apparently 13 tornados and an F4.
I believe it was used in the film twister as the model base for the 2nd last tornado. Dunno for shure tho but thats what I heard.. This tornado passed right by me in millwoods edmonton 21st and 22ave :\
I saw the Edmonton tornado when I was 10, back in 87. I still live in Millwoods. Does anyone have other videos or pictures of the tornado when it was in Millwoods? If so lemme know or post them! :D
From what I've read, evidence points to this tornado being an F5. Like a few other famous tornadoes (Worchester, MA in 1953 for eg.) it was begrudgingly rated as F4 when F5 was more appropriate. The videos I have seen of it in its mature stage are some of the most impressive images I have ever seen - more so than the tornado in Elie, Manitoba - and that sucker was intense!
It happened July 31st 1987....it was a beautiful calm day, my 2 year old and I had just got back from the park and about 30 minlater all hell broke loose.
I live in Edmonton and was only 2 when this tornado struck my hometown. I have a picture of this beast on my livingroom wall. It forever serves as a reminder of that day and to respect such a tremendously fierce and devastating act of nature.
I was there, I had just turned 2 but I vaguely remember my mom trying not to freak out. We lived in an apartment building near Rundle Park, I heard it just missed us...
I was about 25 and had just started a job at westfair foods in the west end of town, I was talking to my mom on the phone, and she was watching the storm in Leduc she was all she could see was the wall of black cloud just to the east of the town, while talking to her, the phone went dead. I have heard the the funnel was between f3 to f5 near Leduc and Beamount.
ultradumbass ur name says it all, if u cant tell theres somthing going on with our planet u better get off the crack, n he said the tornado was when he was 4 n he was talking 2 his teacher in hi school doesent mean it was the same year duh, did u make it to hi school?
lol i can see your a david suzuki and al gore follower. congratulations, i pronounce yu the new ultradumbass. and you are even more of an ultradumbass if you take this name literally because the only time we should think of using this name literally is when we see your mother, which i am doing now while she lays on my bed.
my dad told me a story about it althought i wasn't even born yet, in fact i would be born 7 years later in Leduc, Alberta (just out of Edmonton), but i still heard of all the horrors, since i live in Edmonton
i was 14, i went for a bike ride it was a beautiful sunny day, 10 minutes later i was getting pelted with 3 inch hail stones. my fence was detroyed and a house 3 doors away was totalled, i was lucky
I was a few months shy of four when this hit down, and lived in Mill Woods at the time. All I remember of it is being outside right before it started, and running with my mother back into our house while the winds were picking up. I still remember that eerie calm feeling before hand, despite having been so young and not fully understanding what was happening... it still amazes and horrifies me that I was so close to this thing. Truly scary stuff.
I was 4 when his happened. Altought I live just outside of Edmonton. The whole incident was frightful. I still remember the black skies. In high school, one of the teachers was telling us that he was reading the wind and pressure changes when he was flying his plane down in Calgary.
I was in Edmonton when this monster came. My mom had pulled the car into a grocery store parking lot, and we were listening to the police scanner. I was only eight, but I was sooo scared. Later on we were near Leduc, and my sister caught a glimpse of the funnel. Scary day. May God Bless everyone who died and keep them safe in heaven.
I remember that day too. Driving in rain so heavy it was like driving through a waterfall. I had to steer by looking out my side window. Smaller cars literally floated past. And the hail pounded my car like baseball bats. Then it stopped. Had no idea about what had just happened, until a while later (after the tornado had passed) they finally mentioned it on the radio! It was freaky, but not as scary as it was for the people in its direct path.
I was in Edmonton during the 20th anniversary month of Black Friday; Already heard many talk of it over two years, but while there on the 23rd of July, massive thunderstorms formed around us in Wetaskiwin. Moments later my host took us north to Edmonton; Right over Leduc and CYEG was a horizontal funnel snaking south; We drove under it and hit hook rain within seconds. Returning later, we saw debris all over 2A in Kavanagh and Millet and power was out everywhere. My first real tornado! AWESOME!
tornados r not awesome, i was 14 in londonderry mall on that horrible day. i was in the arcade when my sister told me there were tornado warning n i laughed it off saying we dont get tornados when finally they told us to get down to the basement of the mall, people were crying worried about there families and after it was all over 27 people were dead, most if not all were from evergreen trailer park. we found out later that 3 of my sisters friends were among the dead. tornados r not awesome.
u say u dont get tornadoes ... no offence but *LAUGH**LAUGH**LAUGH**LAUGH* ok i know canada gets a lot less tornadoes than the US but there are tornadoes in canada... even a few big ones (wtich u probably know about)
in 1987 i only heard about tornados and that was on tv ( american news) but for the last decade we get them all the time, makes u wonder what r we doing to our planet.
tornadoes are as common as ever genius. and no we are doing nothing to our planet, your just getting propaganda in your mind. anyways we hear them more now because we got technology to get closer and to show them more duh.....
Mamamia, you do realize that Edmonton is a very, very tiny part of Canada? He wasn't referring to the whole of Canada, which is a HUGE country (2nd largest on the planet) and had a very diverse climate -- parts of this country DON'T get tornadoes, just as parts of the US don't get them. Plus, prior to 1987, tornadoes were unheard of in Edmonton. So I'd say that his thinking at the time was pretty understandable.
I love how Americans can't seem to understand that Canadian regions
are just as varied as the ones in the US, and that what is true of one city isn't necessarily true of the rest. The US isn't the only country on the planet with diverse cultures, climates and regions.
IF you go to the CBC arcives theres a lot more footage of that thing much better I might add. One was taken from out the window of an office tower by an enviroment Canada employee.
it seems that edmonton and surrounding area is getting more funnel clouds and more violent tornadoes within the past couple years......more frequently as well.
wish i could see more pics and videos of this i met a ladie that went throught the tornado in a trailer it diddnt rip the whole thing apart tho just ther and her baby boy they both lived and she broke like 18 bones and almost bled to death
I lived in Millwoods 25 years. We called the funnel cloud reports in to Enviornment Canada when it was still over Beaumont. They didn't care and told us to phone some 1-800 number. We went to the basement instead. 27 people died.
really tragic for the loss of 27 canadian citizens in edmonton. although tornadoes with casualties are rare in Canada, when they happen they are really destructive. my heart goes out to the surviving family members and friends.
Yep, i survived this one, 2pm, looked like midnight,
Got my windows broken in my Nova : (

once the rain hit the hail started soon after and it just a massive storm.
the hailstones were like golfballs and the rain was more like warm buckets of water being splashed on ya.
storm didn't last long though...about an hour maybe then a most beautiful sunset followed.

I saw the Edmonton tornado when I was 10, back in 87. I still live in Millwoods. Does anyone have other videos or pictures of the tornado when it was in Millwoods? If so lemme know or post them! :D

I was in Albequerque, New Mexico. August 1, 1987.
The Edmonton Tornado was on their front page.
May 31rst..yes, was a huge tornadic break-out but in Southern Ontario (12-13 fatalities).
The Edmonton Tornado was horrific, but I know it occured July 31, 1987.
Still...amazing footage for the time!

I have heard the the funnel was between f3 to f5 near Leduc and Beamount.

my dad told me a story about it althought i wasn't even born yet, in fact i would be born 7 years later in Leduc, Alberta (just out of Edmonton), but i still heard of all the horrors, since i live in Edmonton

i was 14, i went for a bike ride it was a beautiful sunny day, 10 minutes later i was getting pelted with 3 inch hail stones. my fence was detroyed and a house 3 doors away was totalled, i was lucky
kitrik23 2 years ago
I was a few months shy of four when this hit down, and lived in Mill Woods at the time. All I remember of it is being outside right before it started, and running with my mother back into our house while the winds were picking up. I still remember that eerie calm feeling before hand, despite having been so young and not fully understanding what was happening... it still amazes and horrifies me that I was so close to this thing. Truly scary stuff.
tuotierugif 3 years ago

AWESOME!

tornados r not awesome, i was 14 in londonderry mall on that horrible day. i was in the arcade when my sister told me there were tornado warning n i laughed it off saying we dont get tornados when finally they told us to get down to the basement of the mall, people were crying worried about there families and after it was all over 27 people were dead, most if not all were from evergreen trailer park. we found out later that 3 of my sisters friends were among the dead. tornados r not awesome.

u say u dont get tornadoes ... no offence but *LAUGH**LAUGH**LAUGH**LAUGH* ok i know canada gets a lot less tornadoes than the US but there are tornadoes in canada... even a few big ones (wtich u probably know about)
mamamia1661 3 years ago
in 1987 i only heard about tornados and that was on tv ( american news) but for the last decade we get them all the time, makes u wonder what r we doing to our planet.
SLASH444ALBERTA 3 years ago
tornadoes are as common as ever genius. and no we are doing nothing to our planet, your just getting propaganda in your mind. anyways we hear them more now because we got technology to get closer and to show them more duh.....
ultradumbass 3 years ago
Mamamia, you do realize that Edmonton is a very, very tiny part of Canada? He wasn't referring to the whole of Canada, which is a HUGE country (2nd largest on the planet) and had a very diverse climate -- parts of this country DON'T get tornadoes, just as parts of the US don't get them. Plus, prior to 1987, tornadoes were unheard of in Edmonton. So I'd say that his thinking at the time was pretty understandable.
I love how Americans can't seem to understand that Canadian regions
tuotierugif 3 years ago
Ask an American "should the US bomb Saskatchawan" the American will reply "if needed yes". I saw that on the Rick Mercer Report. LMAO Americans.
P.s Poor Edmonton...
AttackOFTHEPIE 3 years ago
are just as varied as the ones in the US, and that what is true of one city isn't necessarily true of the rest. The US isn't the only country on the planet with diverse cultures, climates and regions.
