MG's were always good for space, performance, etc for the money. The only trouble was they were built like shit by lazy people from crap materials. They had a reputation for poor build and cheapness. Now they've been taken over by a Chinese company that has a reputation for... Oh yeah - forget it.
Mat I have to disagree on the engine, I went in one today, I thought it was fairly quiet and when it did get vocal at high RPM it sounded really sporty I though, after all MG is supposed to be noise, it is sports car. And you drove the pre-production car, the production car has better plastics and various other tweaks. Don't know why MG gave you that one.
Wow, if he hadn't told me that MG was now Chinese owned (I'm American and don't follow European car companies) I would have had a completely different view of the car.
@firehawk400 but made in china and all bits jut put together in uk loooks like a hyundai i30 and a proton with a very little subaru impreza and its typicaly chianessieness or should i say crapness
@16mmDJ You've just proved my point! You Americans HATE everything that is European, and prefer anything that isn't. You only drive American and Japanese/Asian cars, because you hate European cars and the whole of God Damn Europe. You just said it, and I've always knew it and told people. You are AMERICAN, and you do not follow EUROPEAN car companies. And if Mat hadn't told you that MG (which is BRITISH), was owned by a CHINESE company, you would never own one because YOU ARE AMERICAN.
@MacGyver920 What do you mean don't know what Europe is? Nobody in the US hates European cars; people drive just as many European cars as they do Honda, Toyota or GM products. Where do you get your irrational statements from? We very nearly bought a British car a few years ago, but we chose to buy a BMW instead - it was close though.
@casmatori You are bullying nazis. You try to buy as many European brands as possible, earn yourself some money, before selling the brand to a useless Asian company, which will make the brand sell better in the US (because it's now Asian), but eventually go bust and make Europeans sad. Volvo is suffering this tragic faith as we speak, SAAB is already dead, and you crapped all over the brits by selling Jaguar to and INDIAN company. Wtf? These are just few examples.
@MacGyver920 You're using the personal pronoun "you" in a general way. Are you mad at Germans or Americans? Anyway: Volvo's products are far too expensive for any normal person to buy. Saab weren't very good to begin with; they asked for GM's help when they came into financial difficulties - if you ask me, Saab died way back in the 90s. And not many people buy Jaguars because they can buy much better Lexus or Mercedes products for the same price as you average X-Type.
@MacGyver920 Erm, firstly honey it's Mrs. casmatori. Seeing as though the bulk British motor vehicles are purchased my Americans (as you can't even afford to run your own creations) I think I have some knowledge in the matter. I don't know why you're getting so passionate over this video. To be honest this car looks mediocre and is nothing to fight over; I'd rather buy an '09Toyota Yaris than this dwindling attempt at a motor vehicle! xx
@casmatori Then I guess you are the kind of Americans who is a bit more picky when it comes to cars. You KNOW that MG used to be British, so even though they are now chinese owned, and American owned before that, you won't drive it anyway....cause it was originally British.
@MacGyver920 Yes, though I'm female I'm not ignorant when it comes to cars. I recall that before the demise of the original British MG/Rover company in '04/'05, they made beautiful cars like the Rover 75 that rivaled the quality and grandeur of a Jaguar S-Type. As I said before, we almost bought a Range Rover a few years ago but decided to go with a BMW X5 instead - that was only down to poor customer relations at the Land Rover dealership.

@MrBS4 Anything is better than a Chinese car. And you could've compared MG to VW even though it wasn't owned and built by Chinese, and VW would still be better. But that wasn't my point anyway.
reliability wise, a Chinese demostic brand product can rival so called German engineering (VW). Look up JD power report from their Asian pacific division yourself. You may enjoy adding engine oil to your engine every weekend, but I don't.
@MrBS4 WTF? You are such a dumbass motherfucker. You've NEVER driven this car, but you think it's good, just because of this video. Have you ever driven a VW? OMFG, I don't know what to say to you, cause you're just too stupid.
@MrBS4 You have the worst reason ever to believe this is better than a VW. You're a fucking idiot. And the reason you think the way you do, is probably because you're Canadian. And everybody on the American continent hate Europe, and love Asia, so that's one part of it. Don't you think?
Wow, do not jump to the conclusion so fast, I am living in Canada does not make me a Canadian. (That is off the topic)

Very very decent car. He's just being picky about the steering wheel - they are very slightly off centre in many many cars. If he's crunching the gears then hes not driving properly lol
I don't if anyone noticed it, but that centre console's audio adjustment unit looks like one from Mazda 3 (1st Gen). I still remember the review from Richard Hammond (Top Gear) - "Look at that!"
Looks crap, drives crap, built using crap, owned by people who are known by crappy manufacturing, engine is crap, interior is crap. But it is an MG, so I would buy it...NOT.
@hamster639 Trust me, I don't have to. I know enough about cars to know this car isn't worth its price tag, whatever it is. You should also know that I'm a mechanical engineer.
@IMB2U I am mechanical engineer as well so I know my stuff. It is a good value car that is well engineered, just a shame that it has cheap plastics and a crap engine. MGs have always been fun to drive especially the Z cars so I look forward to drive this. They have a small engineering team of just 300 people compared to other brands such as Ford who have over 2000 engineers just in the UK, massive difference.
@hamster639 Wow, nice to debate this with another engineer. That's my point, why use such cheap plastics if you are trying to bring back the "MG" name. This car can't even do 40 mpg wih a 1.8L engine. That is pathetic if you ask me... You can get over 50 mpg with some of the Focus engines.
It could be fun to drive, which I doubt, but overall, this car is engineered worse than a cheap screwdriver.
@IMB2U Because they don't produce enough cars to justify the need for soft touch plastics everywhere, it has soft touch plastics on the top half of the dash but at the bottom its harder cheap plastics. The advantage of this is the harder bits will be more durable as when people get in and out of the car it can damage the soft touch plastics very easy (see my aunty's 6 year old VW Touran and you see what I mean). It will be fun to drive as it has Z-axle based rear suspension and Hydro Pas.
@hamster639 Well, aren't soft plastics better in case of an accident. I'd prefer my kness to hit those soft plastics as they would absorb more than the hard ones. The best case would be airbags for the knees of course. Does this car have them?
And I really don't think that that's why they opted for the harder, cheaper plastic....Again, Chinese owners: "We want cheap plastic"
@IMB2U Indeed you are correct, but it is still not very good if your knees hit them haha, the car should be engineered for the dash not to contact you knees (Ford pay attention with your cramped footwell in the new Focus). No the 6 doesn't have knee airbags disappointingly, but durability is just as important.
@hamster639 Of course, the best case scenario would be not hitting anything haha. Oh, now that you mention it, I'm kind of dissapointed with the new Focus.
@IMB2U I am as well, it is well built with soft touch plastics everywhere, but it looks like a car they couldn't stop designing, and it has poor rear visibility, MK1 Focus is still the best out of all 3 of them I think.
@IMB2U The chief chassis engineer drive a Lotus Exige which shows his like for handling and he was the engineer of the ZS etc which Tiff Needell once said was the best handling he has experience with a FWD car. the 6 is supposedly better to drive then the ZS which was class leading for chassis dynamics back then. They have a 1.9 diesel coming out next year with a 'German' supplier apparently, and a 2.0 petrol to replace the 1.8T.
@hamster639 I don't trust Tiff for a second. As a matter of fact, I don't trust any car show. This probably won't be the best example, but Jeremy Clarkson says the best car in the world is a Skoda Yeti.
Really, I do hope you enjoy driving this, but I really do think this car is a worthless a piece of crap (overall). And it doesn't matter who the engineers are, as long as the Chinese owners tell them to cut costs.
@IMB2U Tiff is one person I would trust as he is a professional racing driver, Jason Plato another person I would trust, they know a good chassis. I don't think it is the Chinese owners, I think it is them themselves not doing enough market research and listening at customer clinics, but the plastics are no worse then a Mazda for example if not better. Their owners build VW and Buick in China so they should know what to do, and they own 1% share of GM.
@IMB2U Incidentally MGs engineers are developing new small engines in a GM/SAIC joint venture, they will be small direct injection turbo engines and I can see Vauxhall/Opel using these engines as well as MG, it is a win/win for both companies.
@hamster639 MG and GM (Opel is a subsidiary of GM), not the best case scenario. They are just trying to get a slice off other companies. And unless they come up with something magical, why would anyone buy this car instead of its rivals?
@IMB2U Heritage, handling and it is a refreshing breath of fresh air in this class for of dull cars. They need a hot version though to really show that they are being serious.
@hamster639 I guess it goes down to preference. My father owned a MG BGT, he still tells me how much he loved that car. I've never driven an MG myself, I just wish they would have spent some more time on the interior and the engine.
good review .. but personally I don't like this car ... it's ugly ....and there are a lot of brands manufactured who offer better cars ....I don't understand how they gonna sell this car ......
And one more word for you guys - go ahead and think about Bentley owned by Volkswagen Group of Germany, and Jaguar Land Rover being tossed around the international players such as GM and Tata, you guys should seriously mind more than mere engineering. Don't be the next Saab. It's for your own good, honestly.
To our British friends - everyone on earth agrees that you guys make the best cars in the world. Problem is, you guys are NOT able to finance it, and here's why some Asian players with big capitals come in to the play. Please stop whining like those Swedish, who are basically sharing the same epidemics (great cars without money). Think about your Jaguar Land Rover of Tata Motors, it isn't too hard to learn that China is not the only Asian owner for British car brands.
i'd have this MG over a shitty vauxhall any day. They're all soulless American GM tat anyway. except for that monaro, witch is Australian.. witch is nice.
Very impressive comeback for MG! Even if it's chinese owned, please support the british workers and engineers who've brought MG back on UK roads and european ones very soon!
Was an MG/Rover owner for many years before converting to Vauxhall when they went bust....having seen this car though i now know my next car..........an Insignia :)
It looks OK to me, you could lower it, add some more boost and it might be fun, certainly different.
My only concern is Euro NCAP tests, though rumour suggests it may score the maximum 5 stars. If true it almost won't matter relatively how bad the car is, people will buy it.
MG is a unique brand, maybe a forthcoming roadster will be more desirable.
I love the styling of this car. But I really want to discover by myself if it's a good product indeed. I hope it arrives soon in Spain! Wonderful reviews, by the way, congrats!!
@hamster639 i mean to say how many cars (NOS) does this brand has? and does it produces all types of cars like hatches, sedans, luxury sedans or even SUVs?
@nikhilkash92 They currently make this car in China and assemble it in the UK, they make the MG7 which is a big saloon car dating back to 2001 as an MG ZT made in China), MG3 which is a new supermini (made in china), MG TF a 2 seat sports car has just ended production after 16 years (originally MGF made by Rover Group BMW, made in China and UK) and they will begin to assemble a saloon version of the MG6 in the UK.
@macintoshgermany hahaha... well... it is not only him that mentions those things... even top gear and 5th gear mentioned that some of the mercedes models steering are off center...
actually its a common problem with a lot of Asian cars, and on cars that were principally designed in left hand drive. While its not that big of a deal, some are really bad... case in point, the previous Toyota RAV4 (in right hand drive at least). My back and shoulders hurt anytime I drove it for more than an hour. So its a sore point I think is worth mentioning, for a comprehensive review
Or maybe you are so biased that you ignore the fact that the driving positon actually is off center! Place yourself in a merc c-class and you will understand.
@macintoshgermany Mat from CarBuyer here. Off-set steering wheels reduce comfort and over the long-term can exacerbate, and even precipitate, a bad back. So it's important for me too comment on this in reviews. I notice it mostly on European models, and think it’s something to do with the conversion from LHD to RHD. Anything British or Asian is usually spot on... err ...except this MG!? Or maybe you're right – I’m twisted. I'll visit a physiotherapist to get my spine checked and let you know!
@macintoshgermany these cars are usually left hand drive. mercs especially are notorious for not having straight driving positions in right hand drive versions.
@Scudeyyy They should design the cars for LHD and RHD not just LHD and then do a mirrored copy. We don't send our cars out to the continent in LHD all wonky do we? Not that we have many to send...
@ClarophonistCJ BMW made a bit of a song and dance about how the new 5 was designed as an RHD from the start as well. Most companies cant be bothered though which is disappointing :/
@macintoshgermany I belive that steering is a bit off set in many right hand drive cars compared to their left hand equivalents because most cars (I think all of them..) are designed as left hand drives
Seems like there are some 'cheap and nasty' elements to this car - stigma which is already pretty high with both Chinese brands in general, and indeed MG in its recent past.
@discocreator76 All I'm saying is that this was the chance for a new owner to break the stigma surrounding both MG and Chinese ownership - both of which are down to corner/cost-cutting - and make something really solid and really good. Jaguar had a reputation for slightly shoddy reliability and a lack of innovation, and Tata came and turned it round.
It just seems to me MG has not used this opportunity as well as they could have, and have left the stigma unchanged. Pity.
@hamster639 As I said to the other guy, regardless of what I expect, it's just annoying they didn't abolish the stigma. This was a chance to make a car not necessarily perfect, but to set the tone and get MG off to a flying start by not cutting corners on, say, materials.
@michael99887766 They are not cutting corners, they simply do not produce enough of these cars (2000-3000 cars) to justify spending so much money, when the cars start to sell then more money will be spent on these soft touch expensive plastics. Saying that the top half of the dash does have soft touch plastic on par with french and Korean rivals, but not VAG, Ford or Vauxhall levels but those 3 have allot more engineers and budget. The plastics are no worse then a Mazda or any other jap car.
Never have I come across one of these cars yet, not a single one..

first mg that actually looks good.. i like it :]
JiForceful 7 months ago
Of course it's off center, it's in the wrong side.
Miguel1994000000 7 months ago
I don't if anyone noticed it, but that centre console's audio adjustment unit looks like one from Mazda 3 (1st Gen). I still remember the review from Richard Hammond (Top Gear) - "Look at that!"

Looks crap, drives crap, built using crap, owned by people who are known by crappy manufacturing, engine is crap, interior is crap. But it is an MG, so I would buy it...NOT.
It's a piece of crap.
IMB2U 8 months ago
@IMB2U Driven it then have you?
hamster639 8 months ago
@hamster639 Trust me, I don't have to. I know enough about cars to know this car isn't worth its price tag, whatever it is. You should also know that I'm a mechanical engineer.
IMB2U 8 months ago
@IMB2U I am mechanical engineer as well so I know my stuff. It is a good value car that is well engineered, just a shame that it has cheap plastics and a crap engine. MGs have always been fun to drive especially the Z cars so I look forward to drive this. They have a small engineering team of just 300 people compared to other brands such as Ford who have over 2000 engineers just in the UK, massive difference.
hamster639 8 months ago
@hamster639 Wow, nice to debate this with another engineer. That's my point, why use such cheap plastics if you are trying to bring back the "MG" name. This car can't even do 40 mpg wih a 1.8L engine. That is pathetic if you ask me... You can get over 50 mpg with some of the Focus engines.
It could be fun to drive, which I doubt, but overall, this car is engineered worse than a cheap screwdriver.
IMB2U 8 months ago
@IMB2U Because they don't produce enough cars to justify the need for soft touch plastics everywhere, it has soft touch plastics on the top half of the dash but at the bottom its harder cheap plastics. The advantage of this is the harder bits will be more durable as when people get in and out of the car it can damage the soft touch plastics very easy (see my aunty's 6 year old VW Touran and you see what I mean). It will be fun to drive as it has Z-axle based rear suspension and Hydro Pas.
hamster639 8 months ago
@hamster639 Well, aren't soft plastics better in case of an accident. I'd prefer my kness to hit those soft plastics as they would absorb more than the hard ones. The best case would be airbags for the knees of course. Does this car have them?
And I really don't think that that's why they opted for the harder, cheaper plastic....Again, Chinese owners: "We want cheap plastic"
IMB2U 8 months ago
@IMB2U Indeed you are correct, but it is still not very good if your knees hit them haha, the car should be engineered for the dash not to contact you knees (Ford pay attention with your cramped footwell in the new Focus). No the 6 doesn't have knee airbags disappointingly, but durability is just as important.
hamster639 8 months ago
@hamster639 Of course, the best case scenario would be not hitting anything haha. Oh, now that you mention it, I'm kind of dissapointed with the new Focus.
IMB2U 8 months ago
@IMB2U I am as well, it is well built with soft touch plastics everywhere, but it looks like a car they couldn't stop designing, and it has poor rear visibility, MK1 Focus is still the best out of all 3 of them I think.
hamster639 8 months ago
@hamster639 Couldn't agree more. MK1 Focus had originality all over it and it was a joy to drive. The new one doesn't even look like a Focus.
IMB2U 8 months ago
@IMB2U The chief chassis engineer drive a Lotus Exige which shows his like for handling and he was the engineer of the ZS etc which Tiff Needell once said was the best handling he has experience with a FWD car. the 6 is supposedly better to drive then the ZS which was class leading for chassis dynamics back then. They have a 1.9 diesel coming out next year with a 'German' supplier apparently, and a 2.0 petrol to replace the 1.8T.
hamster639 8 months ago
@hamster639 I don't trust Tiff for a second. As a matter of fact, I don't trust any car show. This probably won't be the best example, but Jeremy Clarkson says the best car in the world is a Skoda Yeti.
Really, I do hope you enjoy driving this, but I really do think this car is a worthless a piece of crap (overall). And it doesn't matter who the engineers are, as long as the Chinese owners tell them to cut costs.
IMB2U 8 months ago
@IMB2U Tiff is one person I would trust as he is a professional racing driver, Jason Plato another person I would trust, they know a good chassis. I don't think it is the Chinese owners, I think it is them themselves not doing enough market research and listening at customer clinics, but the plastics are no worse then a Mazda for example if not better. Their owners build VW and Buick in China so they should know what to do, and they own 1% share of GM.
hamster639 8 months ago
@IMB2U Incidentally MGs engineers are developing new small engines in a GM/SAIC joint venture, they will be small direct injection turbo engines and I can see Vauxhall/Opel using these engines as well as MG, it is a win/win for both companies.
hamster639 8 months ago
@hamster639 MG and GM (Opel is a subsidiary of GM), not the best case scenario. They are just trying to get a slice off other companies. And unless they come up with something magical, why would anyone buy this car instead of its rivals?
IMB2U 8 months ago
@IMB2U Heritage, handling and it is a refreshing breath of fresh air in this class for of dull cars. They need a hot version though to really show that they are being serious.
hamster639 8 months ago
@hamster639 I guess it goes down to preference. My father owned a MG BGT, he still tells me how much he loved that car. I've never driven an MG myself, I just wish they would have spent some more time on the interior and the engine.

And one more word for you guys - go ahead and think about Bentley owned by Volkswagen Group of Germany, and Jaguar Land Rover being tossed around the international players such as GM and Tata, you guys should seriously mind more than mere engineering. Don't be the next Saab. It's for your own good, honestly.
lcsxwtian 8 months ago
@lcsxwtian Ford not GM.
hamster639 8 months ago
To our British friends - everyone on earth agrees that you guys make the best cars in the world. Problem is, you guys are NOT able to finance it, and here's why some Asian players with big capitals come in to the play. Please stop whining like those Swedish, who are basically sharing the same epidemics (great cars without money). Think about your Jaguar Land Rover of Tata Motors, it isn't too hard to learn that China is not the only Asian owner for British car brands.
lcsxwtian 8 months ago
i'd have this MG over a shitty vauxhall any day. They're all soulless American GM tat anyway. except for that monaro, witch is Australian.. witch is nice.

@hamster639 i mean to say how many cars (NOS) does this brand has? and does it produces all types of cars like hatches, sedans, luxury sedans or even SUVs?
nikhilkash92 8 months ago
@nikhilkash92 They currently make this car in China and assemble it in the UK, they make the MG7 which is a big saloon car dating back to 2001 as an MG ZT made in China), MG3 which is a new supermini (made in china), MG TF a 2 seat sports car has just ended production after 16 years (originally MGF made by Rover Group BMW, made in China and UK) and they will begin to assemble a saloon version of the MG6 in the UK.

For some reason, the bloke mentions that the steering is off center in a lot of reviews, especially the Mercedes ones...
Maybe it`s not the steering that isn`t straight...
macintoshgermany 8 months ago 32
@macintoshgermany hahaha... well... it is not only him that mentions those things... even top gear and 5th gear mentioned that some of the mercedes models steering are off center...
truknayr23 8 months ago
@macintoshgermany thats mean lol
actually its a common problem with a lot of Asian cars, and on cars that were principally designed in left hand drive. While its not that big of a deal, some are really bad... case in point, the previous Toyota RAV4 (in right hand drive at least). My back and shoulders hurt anytime I drove it for more than an hour. So its a sore point I think is worth mentioning, for a comprehensive review
damieg82 8 months ago
@macintoshgermany Its only like that on car versions with steering wheel on the right.
derbigpr500 8 months ago
@macintoshgermany
Or maybe you are so biased that you ignore the fact that the driving positon actually is off center! Place yourself in a merc c-class and you will understand.
MrBazpoker 8 months ago
@macintoshgermany Mat from CarBuyer here. Off-set steering wheels reduce comfort and over the long-term can exacerbate, and even precipitate, a bad back. So it's important for me too comment on this in reviews. I notice it mostly on European models, and think it’s something to do with the conversion from LHD to RHD. Anything British or Asian is usually spot on... err ...except this MG!? Or maybe you're right – I’m twisted. I'll visit a physiotherapist to get my spine checked and let you know!
MatWatsonCars 8 months ago
@macintoshgermany these cars are usually left hand drive. mercs especially are notorious for not having straight driving positions in right hand drive versions.
Scudeyyy 7 months ago
@Scudeyyy They should design the cars for LHD and RHD not just LHD and then do a mirrored copy. We don't send our cars out to the continent in LHD all wonky do we? Not that we have many to send...
ClarophonistCJ 7 months ago
@ClarophonistCJ BMW made a bit of a song and dance about how the new 5 was designed as an RHD from the start as well. Most companies cant be bothered though which is disappointing :/
Scudeyyy 7 months ago
@macintoshgermany I drive a CLK320 and I can tell you that many Mercedes have the steering off set. Even the Black Series. Damn on a 130 Grand car.
AboutFormulaOne 6 months ago
@macintoshgermany I belive that steering is a bit off set in many right hand drive cars compared to their left hand equivalents because most cars (I think all of them..) are designed as left hand drives

enriqueflimberger 8 months ago
Seems like there are some 'cheap and nasty' elements to this car - stigma which is already pretty high with both Chinese brands in general, and indeed MG in its recent past.
Personally I wouldn't bother.
Keep up the good reviews.
michael99887766 8 months ago 15
@michael99887766 you keep on buying your horribily overated German crap then bud...
discocreator76 8 months ago
@discocreator76 All I'm saying is that this was the chance for a new owner to break the stigma surrounding both MG and Chinese ownership - both of which are down to corner/cost-cutting - and make something really solid and really good. Jaguar had a reputation for slightly shoddy reliability and a lack of innovation, and Tata came and turned it round.
It just seems to me MG has not used this opportunity as well as they could have, and have left the stigma unchanged. Pity.
michael99887766 8 months ago
@michael99887766 MG only have 300 engineers and have only been back since 2008 so what do you expect?
hamster639 8 months ago
@hamster639 As I said to the other guy, regardless of what I expect, it's just annoying they didn't abolish the stigma. This was a chance to make a car not necessarily perfect, but to set the tone and get MG off to a flying start by not cutting corners on, say, materials.
But I'm sure they could improve yet.
michael99887766 8 months ago
@michael99887766 They are not cutting corners, they simply do not produce enough of these cars (2000-3000 cars) to justify spending so much money, when the cars start to sell then more money will be spent on these soft touch expensive plastics. Saying that the top half of the dash does have soft touch plastic on par with french and Korean rivals, but not VAG, Ford or Vauxhall levels but those 3 have allot more engineers and budget. The plastics are no worse then a Mazda or any other jap car.
hamster639 8 months ago
@michael99887766 don't speak too soon. This is only the first car they are selling in Britain since MG Rover crashed.
