Wow, it sounded like the cambelt to me, early stages of needing a new one! Surprised it was a loose plug, i'll remember that incase mine does the same! :-)

My 106 ( yea 106 1.6 16v ) GTI tapped aswell and it was a loose sparkplug like this one :D

its When the cambelt has snapped and not fixed probberly the valves tap on the pistons ever so slitely

Should have bought a Toyota Yaris, much better build quality. French cars are pretty, but not much else, sadly..

tbh the phase 1 306s were very reliable as mine does proove the phase 2 andf 3 were shite for it thouhg
basically the motor industry realises the profit to be made by servicing hence a shitter build quality

my engine was tapping like tht for ages, but as i was driving home it got alot worse :(
think its time to take her to the garage...yours doesnt sound to bad compared mate
