It was not her fault the horse backed up then fell. I spoke to Karen aka the rider and she was very sad to see her horse have a fall. Oh and just in case your wondering the horse broke like 3 ribs I think. but it was not the riders fault
I know shes a professional rider, but I'm 11 and i have my own pony, and im not professional but i would NEVER do that to Barry *Barry = name of my horse* poor horsey. she probss didnt even hurt herself. I wouldve liked to seen her run off to check on the horse she let FALL!
@mollyandbazforever she didn't really "do" anything to the horse, it fell, its not like she could have jumped under it. In an interview i read, she was really sad and scared when this happened. Just like any other caring horse owner
@AnimeOrigamiable Yes, but the Horse wouldnt have fell, if she didnt let go of it. Instead of walking it off of the edge of the platform, she let it go ?!
@mollyandbazforever i know thats what it looks like, but she only had one hand on the reins and the horse was going to fall no matter what she did. As you can see at 0:04 and 0:05 , her horses leg is already off the the bank, before she dropped the reins. If she hadn't, both her and the horse would've been much more severely injured. The horse was scared, and pulling against her, in some situations, simply "walking off the platform" is easier said than done.
@AnimeOrigamiable Yes, I understand that but if the Horse was scared, she should have tried to pull it back onto the platform. I'm not trying to start an argument because I'm not like that (I know you didn't I was starting an argument anyway) but that's just what it look's like to me...and to some other people. x
to deliahaha that horse had already refused one jump and is know for being very hard to ride. I know how in this short clip it looks very bad on the riders behalf BUT she is not know as one of the great riders of our time for nothing!
@ggymnastics Ur, she could've jumped off the side or ran down the bank that the horse would've if he had cleared the jump. If I was here I would've jumped off the side as soon as he fell, too see if he was okay. Poor horse :(
awh poor horse, the karen didnt care about her horse, that horse is a absoloute dream, why would she care do much of herself, she only bumped into the jump, the horse fell down and broke 6 ribs, over re acting cow!
@DieselEquestrian looks to me she was, I would be crying if that ever happened to any horse... i almost cryed watching this? most horses will just stand if you let go of the reins she didnt:/ She he got spooked and went downD: thats why sometimes people call me a bad rider... (Deleted the videos) Because i never hold my horses reins if i fall:/
@KureaBuraianto Well, the inflateable vests kind of make a poping sound when they inflate, so the horse probably was freaking out at that... And It is best to stay calm in a situation like this, as I was, and my horse stayed really calm and was perfectly fine.
are you freaking kidding?? its Karen O'Connor!! shes amazing!!! accidents happen to everyone!!! horses are athletes too, they sustain injuries just like humans. some are horrific and devastting. but some heal fine and continue doing what they love:)
@DELIAHAHA if you think about it there was not much that she could do. The inflaable vests are really constricting. Also, she is up on an elevated platform which is hard to get off of. Furthermore, if a horse is going backwards there isn;t much you can do about it.
@DELIAHAHA i have trained under her. she cares about her horses aton and that horse is fine. Trust me she loves her horses and always does stuff for them. If a horse has acold the vet is out she loves her horses and she us an amazing rider so dont say she isnt.
@PonyLover473 why would you pull just cause of a refusal? Refusals happen, they're no reason to quit unless you or your horse is hurt. He just got a bad spot to this jump and knew he couldn't make it, so it was easier to just stop. It was unfortunate that he fell of the bank, but from what i heard his ribs are healing well. Yes, it's a bad fall, but bad falls can happen to anyone. It's not Karen's fault.
@eventttriderrr. because they horse doesnt want to jump and if you make it THAT happends and i would want that to happen. i trust my horse and i know if he didnt want to jump and i wouldnt make him and cause an accindent just to finish the course
@PonyLover473 How the hell would she know that continuing after a refusal would cause this accident? If everyone stopped everytime they had a refusal people wouldn't even make it to competitions.
@Puzzlehorse123 you see her reaction when her horse falls? pretty obvious she does care about her horse and she obviously wants to get after him as fast as she can. She looks like she wanted to jump right after him but managed to hold herself back, knowing that jumping after him would spook the horse even more. Specially since it got spooked by her vest inflating
horse got scared and fell over the bank after spooking at Karen's air jacket going off after she had landed from the fall. Nasty fall. Glad horse wasn't seriously hurt.
hope he is ok too. Badminton Horse trials official site reported one broken rib, but I am not at all suprised he suffered more. Poor boy, hope he is ok
@equestrian213 You're ignorant. Every equestrian sport is dangerous for both the horse and rider. Eventing may be more dangerous then others for obvious reasons but I can tell you that the horses that love this sport wouldn't have it any other way. Unfortunately Mandiba is not among that crowd. He has an excellent rider who gets him around but his brain (considering past performances) does not seem to be that of a four star horse.
@Arrhythmically well the death rate for people is higher in eventing than in show jumping and dressage and far less for the horse..just saying- i do enjoy just hopping over lil logs and splashing through water and galloping with my horse..so i understand how it's fun...but the higher the jumps in eventing the more dangerous bc they don't fall down like a show jumping jump...
@equestrian213 The latest "frangible pin" technology is being implemented on most all cross country courses. So, in fact, yes, they do fall down.
I do have to agree that over the last years the sport has gotten "more" dangerous then it was due to increasing technicality of the cross country questions. Rotational falls have become more prevalent. The sport has responded with the application of frangible pins and the option of air vests for its riders.
I've had a horse fall backwards down a drop with me, and fall ontop of me walking backwards into a ditch.....2 things in common with Karen O'connor haha, lucky she fell and didnt come off with it....shame it broke its rib, hope that doesn't cut short its career :/
@ILoveMyOTTB: I didn't really do my research into the incident, I was only going off what other people had said on the video. I know that it must be a very serious injury and I really hope Mandiba will be okay!
@ILoveMyOTTB well..Mandiba, an 11-year-old Irish Thoroughbred gelding ridden by American Olympic veteran Karen O'Connor, suffered a broken rib while competing in the cross-country phase at the Badminton Horse Trials in Badminton, England, April 24. The horse is expected to make a full recovery....
Holy shit! I've almost had the same thing happen to me on a trail ride! To get to a certain area you have to do a jump kinda like that (fallen trees and stuff, just not as high), but I stopped my horse before he fell down. Very scary situation!
