hi guys, i have started an initiative against stigma of mental health issues, called Heal The Mind on facebook, unfortunately i can't post the url, please be a part of it
Complain about "stigma" all you like; but facts are stubborn things.
There will NEVER come a day when "out of the closet" mentally ill people can become police officers, serve in the military, become explosives specialists, airline pilots, OR astronauts just to name a few. Any potentially dangerous/highly responsible job will forever be closed to the mentally ill. Also, hunting, owning firearms ect. will always be forbidden to the mentally ill. So... get used to "stigma", it ain't going away!
I struggle with Stimga daily. This is beautiful way of expressing the struggle those of us like myself a "bi-polar one" suffer and others with different mental health issues face in the lifes due to the ignorance of others.
It would be easier to challenge stigma related to mental illness if more people were aware of its effects. People often regard it is weakness of character, laziness or a joke.
So its not just the mentally ill who need to accept your challenge but also non-sufferers who should challenge themselves to re-think their prejudices.
totally inspiring and gives an understand to the way we feel who have mental illnesses i have added this video to my facebook group tenderheart and loving arms hope you don't mine .. the more we talk and share the more we all will understand and stop labeling people with these illnesses..
@MsAgnosticatheist In life there are three types of people, (1) those who can do things (2) those who can't do things (3) those who can do things but have trouble doing them. Those that fit into categories (2) and (3) can easily fall into a wide spectrum of mental health conditions.
I remember when my mental illnesses came around 6 years ago, I encountered some people and I was so much younger. Still I've never encountered them still...but they hold me as a crazy person to this day. Even though I've recovered the stigma that was put against me hurt terribly.
this video is absolutely beautiful, i just found it and facebooked it and at least two people viral'd it to their pages, i know so many people misunderstand mental illness negatively, this is so positive and hopefilled, wonderful!
Its sad to see that in my country (Colombia) people have so little knowledge of psychology, "evebody who goes to a psych is crazy and should be rejected", Ppl usually say European countries have alot of crazy ppl and suicides, but here ppl dont even seek help. And of course Stigmatisation also affects other groups like homosexuals. What a shame... btw thanks for sharing the video
@EMOTIONALLOGICABLE Why are you posting this on different psychology related videos?? whats your point? there are no "3 true reasons" of mental illness
thank you! i actualy went to google translation and had it translated to russian :) and yes the prejudice against my illness was very hard, i had to stop going to school and have homeschool. (hope you understanded what i type)
@xSimplyAmusedx The actual definition is "a distinguishing personal trait that is perceived as or actually is physically, socially, or psychologically disadvantageous." Let me know if you need help with this definition :)
The words are unbelievable. So true, so true. Such a sad place to be when no one understands the pain of depression and anxiety. I could take the words for myself. May we all open our eyes and realize just how painful mental illness is. Thank you for this beautiful song. I would like to have the video.
Great job... used this as a "PSA" on our Concern Hotline Facebook site after reading the many concerns of our "friends" re: the Tucson Trajedy. It's obvious you were very pationate in your work & this was a great post for us as it did not indicate specific areas to get treatment and we could add our HOTLINE numbers in our post. Your work is muchly appreciated!
Beautiful! It captures my message as a public speaker and writer on the issue of mental illness, especially Bipolar Disorder. I was diagnosed with the disease in 1993, one year after my brother's suicide. He, too, had it, but refused to get treatment out of fear of stigma. Our step-sister took life five years later out of fear of getting help for depression. I'm thinking of using your video on my web site.
Amen. And I suddenly realize those Bullies who throw the stigma is doing it because their mental Illness is one of the worst mental Illnesses as they are suffering from a lack of respect and self-esteem they use the openly ill to use to gain some. Not only mental but spiritually ill the Bullies are. Maybe they will be healed too one of these days....have a great weekend. :)
@Licmycat God will catch up with people who insulte riducule someone in any way or form, thats the beauty of it all one day eveyone will have to give an account of how they treated gods children before being condemed, every useless thing that ever came out of their mouth will have to answer for it. I myselfe know i am fine in that area, I treat people how i want to be treated so I am not worried.
@MrGrevy It was academic work but it wasn't supposed to have citations or references it was for a capstone, summing up a topic I was passionate about and creating something aimed to motivate others. Sorry you feel this way, but I have had only positive feedback about this video thus far.
... You are truly a beautiful person, and I know without a doubt that you have in fact touched many with your video. I have a friend that really needs some hope and inspiration, and I shall most definitely share this video with him. Never doubt that you make difference, for you are making a huge difference.
...This in turn shall cause a boomerang effect, and your kindness, and good deeds shall begin to melt away the perception that others might have previously thought of you. By this simple action, you would be surprised to learn just how great a difference one person could truly make.
...I have both witnessed and experienced the cruelty of others, and I have come to the realization that in order to erase evil, one must be able to transform the hearts of others;but in order to accomplish this, one must be willing to first work on bettering his/her self first. For one cannot defeat darkness with darkness. Acknowledge how you wish others would treat you, then you must strive to be the very person in which you desire to see in others.
...If I wish for friendship, I first need to be a friend. If I wish to be loved, I first need to learn how to love unconditionally. If I wish to resolve conflict, I first need to be unconfrontational If I wish to erase evil, I first need to change the hearts of others. If I wish to eradicate stigma, I first need to know myself; know my strengths, and my weaknesses in order to work on improving myself so that I may become all that Heavenly Father has intended. ...
...Because of all of the hardships in which I have faced, I am able to sympathize more closely with individuals who are also hurting, and I constantly make the attempt be the change in which I desire to see in the world. If I wish for people to be kind, I first need to give kindness. If I wish for acceptance, I first need to accept others.
...Yet, among the darkness that may at times threaten to engulf me into a world of despair, their is always a light that shines like a beacon in the midnight sky. That light is Heavenly father in my life, and the knowledge that everything happens for a reason.
...I have lived with such ridicule ever since the age of six, and the excruciating pain that uninformed individuals constantly inflict upon others due to their judgments, fear, bullying, discrimination, gossip, ridicule, and cruelty is truly detrimental, and possesses the ability to crush ones very soul.
I am inclined to confess that your video actually moved me to tears, which is an extremely rare occurrence. I was greatly taken aback by all the images in which you used in the making of this; all the memories of my years past instantly came to mind, flooding my thoughts like run off from heavy precipitation is to a gorge. Yes, sadly there is indeed a massive dark cloud overhead, a cloud that is none other than stigma. .......
This is Karyn Graham an SSW Student, I lost a son who suffered with bipolar disorder...he slipped away on Nov 20/07 after being shot by police. It is my lifes work now to help those with mental illness to enjoy life....and to talk about it so we can "share and care"....the whole purpose of an event I organize called MAYDAY FOR MENTAL HEALTH. I posted your video on my facebook page....thank you....It took me hours to find a very inspiring video like yours! Bravo!
My name is Matthew and i help run a mental illness support page on facebook and just shared with them ur video, the page on facebook is 'Mental illness is not a joke'
Thank you. Peoples efforts to raise awareness to stigma and discrimination has given me the courage to work on a project that can be seen at transcendingstigma.webs.com.
I have learnt to self-manage my bi-polar and i have learnt to use it and embrace it .........BUT i cannot control stigma which is the worst part of this disability. especially when it is your kith and kin.......I am trying to write a book "They all passed by on the other side" about stigma...keep up the good work.......Hazel
Believe me when I tell you that you have inspired MORE than one life. Thank you for understanding and for viewing from a perspective that so many others don't see or choose not to see.
I would love to use your video in a presentation I am making to parents of children with mental illness. Could I have permission to do so? It is going to be held on June 18th. If you are willing, could you send me the video to my email? I don't know anyother way to download it... my email is carolinasalt@gmail.com

@EMOTIONALLOGICABLE Although I don't think those are reasons, i think they are manifestations of mental illness.
