  • The line at 3:50 hahaha god I laughed so hard, alright back to whacking myself.

  • lol I love the commentary bud.

  • You're amazing.. :)

  • seriously shoot the geese next time....

  • ROFL omg .... I am laughing so hard while I'm learning your butterfly crosses.. Damn that bird!! ROFL!! .. Sounds like a dam pterodactyl or some shit.

  • lol even the greats peg themselves in the face

  • @Metallicrazy I'm not a great, and yeah, I peg myself in the face every now and then. It happens more often when I'm doing a tutorial, because I'm focusing on what I'm saying and what I look like to the camera, rather than where the poi are.

  • @NathanielEverist bullshit you're a great.

  • is this guy on his lunch break or what?!

  • Awesome tutorial dude, you do a great job breaking all the motions down to a simple explanation!

  • ha...cross... i think u tried to make a funny...its ok mate, ur good at poi...so its gonna be ok. but yea, thanx a bunch for your tutorials, they really help the self learner...

  • What's that move called that you do from 1:33 - 1:36?? I've been trying to find a tutorial for it but I have no clue what it's called...

  • @HoopingSarahSunshine They're same-direction, split-time, 4 petal anti-spin wallplane flowers with a vertical linear extension through the middle... uh, forget that, just look for a video on "wallplane flowers" or "wallplane antispin flowers" and you should find something helpful. Good luck!

  • "Whatever. Screw humor." i could not agree more. ;D

  • Where the fuck are you dude?

  • Where the fuck are you dude?

  • this is a very good tutorial

  • i cant hear wat his saying because of those fukn dumass birds!! LOL :P

  • those birds are wacked! good video. thanks!

  • dude that bird at the beginning made me laugh so much, your videos are really helpful btw

  • Thank Thy Very much! oh by the way i kept seeing unidentified moving objects in the background. But thank you very much xD

  • wat is the name of the trick he does at 14 seconds,,,

  • @NikolaisJavan it's an Isolation of some variation

  • ahh hthat doesnt help much, im trying to look up a tutorial for that specific move cause it looks so ILL

  • @NikolaisJavan

    it's just a wallplane isolation i think

  • in every one of your vids there is a random line that makes me crack up :D

  • "shut up" jajajaja

  • what does he practice with.? i wanted to start teaching myself these basics. (i'm trying to figure out what he's using)

  • Nice videos, I have learned a lot! Happy to see you are making more.

  • Very usefull! I could'n get the huggy down, and now i hear you say it's gonna be easier to learn them when you know the butterfly crossers!

So nice to hear haha! Thanks for the tutorial :)

  • Hi I'm Angelica, Medellin Colombia.

I love your classes in poi, the discovery 3 days ago. Today I started to practice Butterfly Crossers, Huuuuuu .¡¡¡¡¡ hard. I've been all day watching your videos.

    Thank you very much

  • best......accent....ever!!!!

  • Hey, thanks!

  • ive been doing poi for about a month and a half, ive got all the basics with a lot of intermediate moves. i just learned bhb weaves for&rev and buzzsaw fountains for&rev( or anti not sure). but i was wondering if you could do a video on polyrhythmic butterflies( i think thats what they are called). the thing where one arm is doing an extension the whole time while the other arm is doing a butterfly. if you could help that would be great.

  • "other arm is doing a butterfly" sorry its more of a anti flower wall plane.

  • Coming right up, should be up within the week. I think I know what you're talking about, so I'll make that asap.

  • thanks bro

  • why was i expecting for the teletubies to show up and run in the back round..LOL nice scenery

and thanks for the help i got this down pat.

  • lol, good point, it really does look like that hey. Oh, and cool name, I love Pokemon.

  • i finally understand!!! thank you!

  • HAHAHAHAHA! You're so WELL-DRESSED! gratz!

  • if you look over head on a butterfly are the poi at a small *X*?

  • If you're talking about what I think you're talking about, then yes. If you're not, than no. I hope that helps...

  • yeah it does thanks=)

  • did that hurt? lol

i just took one for the team as well lol

  • your very good at poi:) i like how you use alternative names i just call them butterfly crossers.. huggie makes poi just sound really childish ya know.. but VERY GOOD:) i wanna see more from you mayb the flowrs you did infrot of you

  • Umm well mine have got loops on them to grip hold and they have got like streamers on the end of the tennis ball are you doing anymore vids about poi's coz i really enjoy learning your moves

  • hello ur really good but is sock pois the same as like nomal pois coz i am not sure :/

  • Thank you. By "normal", do you mean fire poi? Because more people use socks than fire poi I've found. The two are slightly different, mostly because of the way you hold the poi, with socks you hold onto it yourself, with most fire poi, you loop it around your fingers, but if you can learn something with socks, you can do it with fire poi, so the skills will crossover for sure. Socks might even make learning easier.

  • i love the idea of teaching for free. information should not be limited to those with the more full pockets.

anyway i love your poi tutorials.

i think i need new practice poi though because socks with tennis balls filled with rocks aren't cutting it anymore.

  • information is free. It's already out there in the world, its just up to us to grab it, and share it. I talk to a friend about this a lot. He says "I've been spinning for years, and all these new breakthroughs in Poi were always there, we just didnt realize it til now".

    Short version...I agree ^^

  • Information isn't always free, or at least the sources of information aren't free. There are things that I know that you don't know, and I might want something in return for me sharing that information with you, hence the information not being free. I could make all these videos of a higher production value, throw them onto DVDs and charge $30 for them, but for reasons too long to explain in comments, I don't think that would be the right thing to do. It's not as easy as just "grabbing it"

  • I think you misunderstood. I'm not saying the information that Im getting from you is as easy as grabbing it. I'm saying the information of what you can do with poi, and the information in the universe is just about grabbing and realizing it. If you were left to you own in the world with no internet, you would realize all these moves and information on your own.

  • I understand, I just disagree, I don't think that we would realise all these moves and information on our own, because if we were alone in the world, we would most likely be living a subsistence lifestyle where the majority of our time is put into our own survival. It is through community and specialisation that the human race has come so far. Globalisation simply extends the community, but it has far reaching benefits.

  • It takes more than just grabbing that information and realising it because that information may, and most likely is out of your reach. For instance, if I wanted to see the rings of Saturn, I'd need access to a telescope, which is a means of information. So, I would need not only the provider of a telescope, but also the previous generation's of invention that evolved the telescope to where it is now. I understand what you're saying, which is basically "things aren't invented, they're discovered"

  • but I respectfully disagree. Some things are discovered, if they have previously existed, but if not, then they require some sense of creation to be... well, created. And without access to the knowledge of others, or at least the outcomes of that knowledge, we would not have access to the information that we currently do have access to, regardless of whether we believed it already exists.

  • I talk to Insignia on a regular, and he always talks about spinning like 10 years ago and he always is like "Hybrids always existed, we just didnt realize it".

But I really appreciate your hard work and your tutorials. If you ever were looking for donations, i'd be one of the first to do so. But its like training someone to draw. All they have to do is see. But we need teachers and mentors. Its hard to see sometimes. ^^.

    So again...much appreciated.

  • Thanks for the kind words, I truly appreciate them, but no, I'm not looking for donations or money from my viewers anytime soon, I simply want to make the information free, because I think it's important that it is accessible to those who can't or don't want to pay for DVD's etc. Poi has brought me so much enjoyment, and it has so much further reaching potential than is first apparent, like for instance, taking away some of society's dependence on consumerism and electronic entertainment for fun

  • Again however, I must respectfully disagree with what Insignia said, I don't think hybrids would've existed until somebody actually discovered them. Even the word "realise", means "to make real", so if I wanted to be Semantic, I could claim that through the use of those words you are actually suggesting that they're not real until discovered, which is what I'm saying in this context. It has the potential for reality, but it doesn't exist until somebody creates it and says "this is a hybrid".

  • Obviously some things in the universe do already exist and are discovered, but I believe these to be things that are physical by nature, and have actually existed prior to being discovered, whereas concepts, ideas and most importantly, arts, aren't already in existence, they are created through thought. Take your example of drawing, a drawing of true art, something that hasn't been drawn or even seen before, didn't exist prior to me drawing it....

  • it wasn't "always there, I just needed to realise it", no, it is an original creation as an outcome of my visualisation and creativity. And as for training someone to draw, it's not a matter of just seeing, it's a matter of translating what you see into a physical being distinct from what you originally saw. If you simply copy what you see with your eyes, you're not really creating, rather replicating, but if you manifest what you see in your mind, then you are creating something new.

  • Ok, I just realised how much I'm starting to ramble on this topic, sorry. I understand your and Insignia's point of view, and it is a valid one, but it's not the view I adhere to, and hopefully through my ranting you can decipher why I disagree. If you have any questions or disagree with anything, please feel free to say so. And thanks again.

  • @loveandbullets07 try water balloons filled water. make sure to at least triple layer it for security, that is if you have not tried something else apart from rock filled tennis balls in years time lol.

  • here's a question for you: which evercises would you recommend for increasing flexibility relevant to poi? at the moment i do 2 different types. one is stretching my arms in the behind the back weave position to as far in front of me as possible. the other is from the crossover hugs position, where i stretch my arm as far back as i can. what do you think about the start of this clip? clip URL is v=_yj1oLRmSXA

  • what a rude bird! hahhaa

  • ugggh i wish it looked like that out here right now i hate winter.

  • If you saw that field now, you know why I hate Australian summers. In fact, tomorrow I'm going to make a tutorial in that field and you can see how dead it looks now. Not to mention the bushfires that are ravaging my home-state at the moment, I had the evacuate my house a couple of days ago because of fires just 5 minutes down the road. I haven't actually had to evacuate in a while, so it was an exciting experience.

  • I heard about that. actually donated a bit of money earlier last week to help with the bush fires. nature has its ups and downs. Austrailia is beautiful though, one of the places ive always wanted to travel to. be safe and hope everything ends up okay.

  • Yah I love butterflies. There r so many varients. Nice tutorial m8.

I've been spinning 6yrs and it seems that ppl are learning Poi much faster these days, thanks 2 good teachers. I know from experience cos I taught myself (due 2 a lack of good online tuitorials in the beginning) and I can teach ppl much faster than it took to work the moves out.

But like u said, time means nothing in Poi; evolution is everything. Thanks;)

  • I just woke up one night and the idea for poi-spinning just shone in my brain. then I knew only that there is something called "buzsaw" (we call it "the sun" here btw.). Now I'm good (just had my first fire 2 days ago) but really thank to Nathaniel ;)

  • Yeah, poi is easier to learn now due to far more resources. It's definitely admirable that you managed to teach yourself though. And yes, evolution is everything, very aptly put.

  • Dude. You made a video right after coming from a job interview.

    DEDICATED. ^^

  • Thanks man, but I should be more dedicated. I really should have finished making all my proposed lessons by now, but I'm so darn busy. And whenever I get any time to spin, I just wanna spin, not make a tutorial video. Oh yeah, come to Melbourne!

  • thanks for the video man!

how long have you been spinning?

  • No problem dude, I've got a bit of an issue with telling people how long I've been spinning, because it breeds competition and incubates a "race" like environment where people who have been spinning for longer but whom aren't as good might feel disheartened, and there's more to skill than time, as the resources at one's disposal have increased substantially since poi first began. But to answer your question, about 1 year and 9 months.

  • instead of getting a white collar job, you should teach people poi!

and yes, realising that you've been doing poi half as long as me and are many orders of magnitude better not only breeds competition, it also breeds resentment. i hate you nathaniel! ;)

  • I'd love to, but on principle, I want to teach poi for free, if you start charging for lessons, it creates the impression that poi is profitable, and as soon as there's profit to be made in something, competitive nature isn't far behind. I could talk for ages on the subject, but I'm sure you know what I mean.

Oh, and if you hate me, I hate you too :P

  • I lean more towards the crossers out of weaves. They just seem to flow better. but still I think learning the BF version is important because you further explore moving your poi with the movement of your body, often a concept overlooked.

  • Oh, me too. Same direction, split-time crossers link in beautifully with weaves and reels etc, but I started with this one because it's easier to learn using this technique. Then the same-direction crossers are easier to learn after learning this one because it teaches the importance of turning your body side to side to keep the poi moving. At least that was my thinking anyway.

  • Nice tutorial, really helped. Hope you get that job.

  • Cool raw tutorial, I always had trouble explaining to people how to learn the butterfly crossers. This will help me help others to learn it.

  • Glad to help, spread the knowledge my friend.

  • great skill but poor sound in video

  • Yeah, I know. I was contemplating not posting it for that reason, but honestly, this was about the 10th time I'd tried to make this video, and that's not exaggerating. In the end, I felt that while the sound quality was poor, you could still understand it and learn from it, so I wasn't too bothered, I just wanted it done and out of the way.

  • Shure, i understand this. Personally i learning new tricks by just look and try notice how the poi's go-accros-the-air. Hope you have some time for visit my channel and leave some opinnion under my first recorded fire how.

    greets

  • Nice 1! I may have to steel this approach, as it never occurred to me as such a simple and elegant approach to BF crossers.

  • Follow this up with "(un)winding your body in a crosser". Start in BF Crosser. Turn your torso the over-the-shoulder side (like at 5:20 ). Might be easier from Reverse BF at first, cuz Forward BF has a little bit of antispin. Bring the top hand from shoulder up over your head, as you turn to face wallplane. Your poi swings behind your head. Keep turning to uncrossed position facing down the hall. Keep turning the same way until you end up facing where you started, in the other BF crosser.

  • Once you make your split-same crosser tutorial, I'll probly throw my 2 cents in on how to do the same thing with that.

What I like most about crosser is that they are just like (hip or shoulder) reels, only arms crossed. So if you get good at the different modes, and how to (un)wind in and out of them, you have major comfortability to flow in and out of just about any positions., crossed or uncrossed. =)

  • Thank you for your compliments, it means a lot coming from you. You hit the nail on the head about them being like reels, I mentioned that in the description. I love poi movements that train the user to feel comfortable with their hands in different locations, I call them "body beats" (although I'm still not sure about that name), stolen from "body throws" from juggling, and they, in combination with turning and the different modes are the most fundamental aspects of poi to learn in my opinion.

  • The key positions to me, include hips, shoulders, waistwrapped (although I have qualms about the term "waistwrap", it's established now unfortunately), crossed hips, crossed shoulders, behind the head, under the legs, waistwrapped under the legs, crossed under the arms, above the head... am I forgetting any? I think, if you train yourself to use these positions in any combination with each other or mode (and if you wanna get really technical, inverted also), and learn to turn in each position...

  • Your poi spinning will improve dramatically.

  • As usual, thnx for the ideas. Fun tutorial, the noise birds are the extra touch :D ...1:30 XD

  • thank you. you have the best poi tutorials out of everyone on youtube.

  • Why, thank you very much!

  • Alright comprehensive crossers! I am really excited to learn these!

  • Glad you're making videos again. Thanks nathaniel.
