Important point: Arthur's dad wasn't around when she first put the snowball away, therefore did now know the 'importance' of it. My guess is the night before he got some ice water, accidentally knocked the snowball off its' plate and onto the floor, and mopped up the resulting puddle. And also notice he wasn't around when the accusations started.
