Volker stimulated the economy too, lets not forget.

I only look at the polls that aren't one sided. I know this must eat your ass up, but it's the truth.

@lander4545 He raised them. It is a fact. But he also eliminated deductions and so on. The revenues came in, but his spending exceeded revenues greatly. Meanwhile U.S. debt tripled under Reagan. Unprecedentedly, our country went from being the world's creditor, to its largest debtor. Many boons associated with his presidency resulted from Volker's Fed policies.

In fact in 1981 he instituted the largest tax decrease in U.S. history.25% across the board.The Reagan Administration knew there would be adjustments and there were,a roll back of corporate tax cuts and a smaller roll back for individuals in 1982.But taxes were still less for everybody than before the 25% decrease.

@lander4545 Thanks for the info. The top marginal tax rate was lowered dramatically. I know he presided over several increases later. He rolled back about a third of the initial tax cuts. Later in the decade he increased gas tax, and payroll tax. In sum, he cut more taxes than he added, but the burden of tax revenues were shifted away from upper brakets and toward middle income earners. And he racked up deficits, and debt. Volker stimulated the economy too, lets not forget.

There were record revenues to the U.S. Treasury but the Democrats and the military buildup ate it up faster than the treasury recieved it. But to defeat the Soviets it was worth it. We did in fact bankrupt them. When Reagan took office the Federal tax rate was 70% and at the end of his administration it was 28% so tell me there was no overall tax decrease!

Am I wrong about this? Also, re Laffer Curve --- there is a sweet spot, or zone in which revenues are increased, outside of which they are reduced by too high a tax rate, but also too low a rate. In any case, revenues were insufficient relative to spending under Reagan, the Bushes, and now Obama.
