  • A lot of people don't know this, but one in every three snakes is gay.

  • I hate snakes. They should all be destroyed.

  • @VeryHugeAss

Don't worry. Most Ontario snakes are listed as threatened in some capacity. You may have your wish sooner than you realize.

I agree with you. They are horrible things. But, they taste very good.

  • @beerock2000 u better not be seriouse u fucking eat them??!? snakes are amazing animals and for somone to eat them is pretty freakin nasty

  • @VeryHugeAss u should have been when u were a fetus little boy

  • This is a Great video/compilation of snakes in Ontario!

My personal snake list includes meeting all of these but the Queen, the Buttlers, and the Blue Racer.

I am pretty lucky to have met - at one time or another - the rest of them!

My favourite encounters were with Smooth Green and definitely my fav..Fox snake...

  • What part of Ontario are you in because I live in Niagara and I go herping all the time and I never get GIANT SNAKES like you are so please tell. I loved the video nice snakes :)

  • @teehee1310

Ontario is a huge province and snake distribution is specific to habitat preference. I hate to say it, but if you want to see some bigger snakes, you will have to travel. You may or may not have some rattlesnakes not too far away, though. Just look up distribution maps for the province. It should shed some light on the subject for you.

  • We like snakes. We held a boa constrictor called Brittany when we were in Calgary and we saw a green one in the grass when we were on holiday in Nova Scotia. We don't have so many snakes at home.

  • @ChasandEd

Sounds like you are having a great summer!

I saw my first smooth green snake in Nova Scotia many years ago, actually.

You're from the UK, yes? Have you ever seen an adder? How about slow worms?

  • nice vid, man. I found what I think may have been a gopher snake(dead unfortunately) at Shirley's Bay in Ottawa. What can you tell me about their status around here? Despite a strong interest and lots of effort, all I've ever seen have been garters and watersnakes.

  • @rldickie

It is highly unlikely that what you saw was a gopher snake. Near Ottawa, the only patterned snake would be the milk snake. Sometimes they can be a bit brown, but they are usually closer to grey. However, dead snakes often exhibit colour changes as they rot, so that could be why it looks more like the gopher snake. Sometimes pet snakes escape or are let go far from their native habitats, but it is rare, and rest assured, the gopher snake is not found anywhere in the province.

  • @beerock2000 Thanks much for the clarfication.

  • Hello Im from Hamilton area south of lake ontario what are snakes common in that area

  • @MyReptiles101

I don't know the area very well, but I'm sure you'll turn up brown snakes, red-bellies, garters, milks and water snakes. All are relatively common almost anywhere in the province. It is possible that you will also have smooth green snakes, but I can't be sure. Also, ringnecks are likely. Happy hunting!

  • @beerock2000 Haha, you hit the nail on the head. The 5 you mentioned i've found, no doubt the two you said might be here are here somewhere...it can really be diffucult to find snakes. Although you make it look easy in this video. :P

  • i like your show you made

  • Good vid - well done

  • i found a blue racer befor in portcolborne and i found a red yellow and black snake like the coral snake in portcolborne

  • @FABCOWINDSOR

Nice to know that there are some snakes out and about already. Where are you at? Windsor?

  • FANTASTIC VIDEO! My friend, you did a great job! Good to see we got some herpers here in Ontario! Are there any particular spots that are great for finding snakes? Like a park, hiking trail, etc?

  • @JPRanger08

The Georgian Bay area is a bonafide 'hot spot', but that doesn't exactly narrow it down. I have a few 'secret' spots that I like to visit, but I've always come to them through exploration. That's the fun of it. Know your snakes, know their habits and habitat preferences and you'll be ahead of the game. Ontario is pretty large and species distribution is case specific, so it depends on what you are looking for.

  • @beerock2000 Thanks! I go down to Georgian Bay alot in the summer, I'll be sure to cheak out some more spots there!

  • @JPRanger08

Great! Just be sure to apply the field herper's code: take only pictures, leave only footprints. Flipping rocks and debris is productive, but make sure you put them back the way you found them.

And, as always, don't keep any specimens. On top of being illegal, it is irresponsible.

Maybe we'll run into each other some day.

    Good luck!

  • Were can I find the green snake ?

  • @BSReptiles

Apparently, the green snake has a very wide distribution in the province, but, in my experience, it is one of the least commonly encountered species. It could be because it is green and, therefore, difficult to spot, or it could be due to its habits. I've seen all of mine in the Georgian Bay area, sometimes under debris, sometimes on the road. I've never seen one out and about.

  • Thanks for this video,I am in Ontario and on hikes I will try to see if I can find snakes. I have even seen Garter snakes in my own yard, which is interesting since I'm in the city(hamilton) so they must be adaptable creatures. I'm one of the few people that likes snakes :) I have seen our rattle snake as well and was surprised at how small it is,and of course kept a safe distance but admired it and gave it the space it needed

  • I really enjoyed your documentary, it was very informative, and well played. thanks.

  • Awesome video, Brock. You make a charming host.

  • i was in northern ontario and i saw the back half of a snake... its was red with black stripes. im from nova scotia. so i was interested. do you know what kind of snake it was?

  • @poobed666

Norhern Ontario means many different things to many different people. It could have been a red-sided garter snake. This is a sub-species of the Eastern Garter Snake. Generally speaking, this snake is highly variable in its morphology. But, if it had stripes of any variety, it was likely a garter snake or a ribbon snake (although, the ribbon exhibits far less variation).

  • @beerock2000 lol sorry i ment ot say black wit red stripes.. and ya i found it... it was a red striped ribbon snake

  • that might be the best snake video on youtube

  • I felt absolutely terrible today! While I was trimming the lawn on our farm I hit a milk snake and did damage that will probably prove fatal. It was tucking up along the under edge of our garage along the bottom and I could not see it. It did slip away after but was bleeding and the two cuts were quite deep. I personally think it is one of the most beautiful snakes in Ontario.

  • @PeeTank

Don't worry. Sounds like you didn't mean it and would have avoided it if you could. A recent study concluded that some 7% of Ontario motorists go out of their way to hit small animals (including snakes) that they see on the side of the road. Pretty scary, eh?

  • Thank you for your message. Most impressive! The only snakes I have seen in the wild, so far, are garter snakes, brown snakes, and a single milksnake. I have a long way to go!
