  • Why is yours GNOME and mine is XFCE

  • @pd3331 Ubuntu Studio 11.04 was GNOME based, whereas Studio 11.10 is XFCE based.

You can download 11.04 version from: cdimage(dot)ubuntu(dot)com/ubuntustudio/releases/11.04/release/

  • @quidsup Thanks I did this and got GNOME, Thanks

  • Any way to convert recorded sessions into mp3?

  • @Kingddd333 Theres an app called SoundConverter (or SoundKonverter for KDE) which can convert video / audio into MP3. Is that what you're after?

  • @quidsup Well, maybe. It's to convert qtractor sessions, into a single mp3, if that's possible.

  • Wow, this video was less than useless. We can click on menu items and read tooltips ourselves. You have shown us nothing and taken 5.3 minutes to do so. Why don't you show something useful that can be done in Ubuntu Studio?

  • what programs are using for making screen casting ?

  • @luckyluke1820 gtk-recordmydesktop

  • Volume was to low on the review. Could you fix this in the future?

  • Changed sim card and internet is still slow

  • until they can make it to where the left hand side " bar" of big launching icons can be moved TO THE BOTTOM. i'm not interested..i'll stick with Mint 11x64 with the gnome 2 desktop and tweak it to my liking. I"ve read WAY too many articles of people complaining about wacko issues wtih unity and ubuntu 11.04 so to me it seems ( so far) that ubuntu creators or whatever have taken an almost VISTA approach to trying to improve ubuntu. NOpe..SKIPP vista ..win 7 lol. :P

  • @chronofusion Well, Ubuntu Studio doesn't even have the Unity bar. Personally, I think it's ugly and annoying anyways, so I'm a happy camper. I prefer tiny quick launch icons for often used programs.

  • @LimboShrimp haven't tried Ubuntu studio. forgot about it. thank ya much for the reminder. I wrote it down and will try it later this week..cheers

  • Hey! , i just installed this SO with everything but the 2d/3d modeling :B, i have used linux for a long time , but now i want to create videos so i instaled this distro

i have a question man , how did u get unity ? o compiz , i instaled, i have instaled nvidia graphics also , but i cant run compiz or unity , any help plz ?

  • what's the problem with unity. unity was the reason why i changed from windows. i really like it

  • @paulhojda Some people like it and some people hate it. I think Unity is great

  • @paulhojda well its a thing of tastes, personaly i dont like it very much but i'll give it a try, but if u are used to the vlasic gnome , you probably dont like unity cause isnt much configurable (im practicing my anglish srry) , for example i like to use docks, i use AWN , but with unity you cant :/ , some people use gkrellm but with unity i have read it has issues :B , greets

  • @paulhojda Maybe the previous apps like Unity where better, for example try cairo-dock and see the differences

  • @paulhojda Gnome 2 had so much to offer in terms of customisation, you could place your icons where you wanted, you could easily theme the GTK environment, and scripts could be easily made to add more options. Unity removes a lot of customisation options and is fair to say it is a huge disappointment to see canonical head in that direction. Shortly after Gnome-3 brought the death of customisable gnome environment.

Linux sucks compared to 5 years ago. Thats why people prefer gnome-2.

  • Why was Ubuntu 11.04 laggy for me, I installed 10.04 and it's faster in the installation live cd then 11.04 is when it's installed.

  • @LuigiKat11 11.04 is a bit more heavy on memory requirements than 10.04 was. Perhaps thats why?

  • @LuigiKat11 It's because of the Unity 3D desktop. It requires a bit more RAM and better graphics card hardware than the old 10.10 GNOME desktop. You might try selecting the classic GNOME desktop when logging in for a lighter weight desktop (same desktop 10.10 had).

  • Thanks, Great vid.

Im having trouble installing ubuntu studio with a usb drive. Has anyone tried that yet. The installation process goes fine but it wont boot up into the OS.

    I used UNetbootin

    Thanks!

  • @mrcooperhansen Does it come up with any error messages? Do other Linux distros boot? Could be a BIOS issue? Maybe you need to select drive from BIOS boot menu?

    Cheers

  • @quidsup No error messages come up. Ive tried messing with the BIOS setting but it doesnt help. Im trying a different usb iso loading program now (linuxpendrive). I'll tell you if it works. Thanks!

  • @quidsup nope, didnt work :(

I also tried to install plain Ubuntu but that hasnt worked either. Ive tried with several different iso recorders and different disks but nothing works. The first time I tried it acctually did work but then I tried to reinstall it and from then on, all of my attempts have failed.

  • @quidsup Cool, I finally found an old copy of plain Ubuntu and it installed perfectly. Then I just installed all of the Ubuntu Studio stuff afterwards.

    Thank You!

    ~Cooper

  • @Lustmord19 unity is an epic win. (fixed)

  • Would be great to see some audio recording in ardour of live analogue instruments such as a guitar (rather than just midi). Do you play or sing anything? Doesnt need to be mozart, just as a demonstration. I always felt that art packages like gimp or blender didnt justify a whole distro on their own as they are so easy to set up elsewhere. Analogue to digital audio sampling (or video capture) is such a pain in the neck that they do. I'd like to see if the change from realtime kernel is noticable.

  • @Lustmord19 Unit is so much better than the classic default... That was a pile of shit. Unity makes ubuntu so much easier and nicer to use.

  • @TheLololol111 Ubuntu Unity SUCKS BAD.. it has tons more BUGS , and way less customisable . Classic GNOME2 is way better , and is made for people that know how to customisable Linux. Unity is made for NOOBS that have no idea how to use Linux.

  • @maw88ify ...which is EXACTLY what makes Unity BETTER suited for use by the masses. Dude, we want people to use ubuntu and its derivatives. Those people you call "NOOBS" are doctors, teachers, and professionals of nearly EVERY field. Linux HAS to be easy and stable for people to use. The more people are using Linux, the more incentive all of its developers will have to continue making it grow.

If you dont like Unity, just don't use it.

  • @jathanator Critical flaw in your thinking . I already said that it Unity is Buggy as hell , and there for NOT good for NOOBS. Then you tell me " just don't use it" so basically all they are saying is >> I don't care if you have been using Ubuntu YEARS, and if you don't like Unity to damn bad ? I would just use GNOME3 but they screwed it up as well GNOME 2 was better . Linus Torvalds the creator of Linux says Gnome 3 is an "Unholy mess.", and Unity is buggy .

  • @maw88ify Totally agree. I'm somewhat new to Ubuntu and Unity just didn't work for me so I switched to the classic GNOME, no second thoughts about it.

  • dude does it have unity ?

  • @TheOpensourceFTW Its optional, during the installer you can choose whether you want to install Unity

  • Good job. Just as I have come to expect from you.

  • @Gatorman32656 Cool cheers mate

  • Thanks a lot for the upload Quids. Looks pretty good, loads of stuff for Audio Production. I'm an audio professional and windows or mac will always (at least for a long while) have dominance in this area, but it looks pretty robust. I might have to install it to another partition to check it out.

  • Does it come with pulseaudio? Because pulseaudio would render it useless for musicians. I get like half a second latency when just echoing from my mic under Ubuntu (not to mention applying effects on the sound first).

  • @SeltsamerAttraktor Yes pulse audio is in there. When I glanced through the list it looked like quite a lot of programs used Jack audio

  • @quidsup Jack is the low latency sound server, which is of course needed for audio applications. Whereas pulseaudio is a high latency soundserver for the average joe. If they put pulseaudio in there, it will stick itself onto the ALSA device and block jack from accessing it directly ( if they didn't manage to prevent that from happening, which I highly doubt they did), rendering the distro useless for audio. And pa is always a pain in the ass to safely deactivate / remove.

  • Ubuntu Studio without a realtime kernel? Sounds like alcohol free beer or oxygen free air.

  • @SeltsamerAttraktor lol ewww yuk alcohol free beer

  • @quidsup LOL alcohol free beer is like licking your moms pussy....tastes the same but the feeling's wrong

  • hey,i tried to install ubuntu 11.04 and i have tearing with my nvidia card.is there any tearing in ubuntu studio?thanks

  • @Funtwothebest I would have guessed that its a driver / kernel issue, so odds are Ubuntu Studio will do exactly the same.

What nvidia card is it? Im using an nvidia 9800 and its absolutely fine with proprietary and FOSS Nouveau drivers. Although the Nouveau driver wasn't quite so fast for gaming.

  • @quidsup i have nvidia gt 220 and i use proprietary drivers but tearing never desappear.help

  • @Funtwothebest Could be worth uninstalling then reinstalling the driver

  • I see you have installed ubuntu 11.04, what doe you think about Unity now you use it all the time?

At first a was confused why they changed to Unity, but now I am used to it I like it alot.

  • @berre1994 I like Unity as a concept, but using it for real Im finding it too buggy. Big problems have been with kdenlive, OpenGL games, and the quality of screencasts. After next video is uploaded Im pulling 11.04 off and going back to 10.10

  • @quidsup I am diong exactly the same thing (going back to 10.10 I mean) :P

  • awesome video as always ,,, thanks

  • @abuammrah Cheers thanks
