They both do great things!

AMD has done a lot over the years. They were first to break 1GHz, dual-core, dodec-core, IMC (no front side bus), 64bit x86, L3 cache, hyper-transport links etc. Athlon XP/64 was far superior to Pentium 4 back in the day ;)

Whoever you prefer, AMD Bulldozer vs. Intel Sandy Bridge will be fun in 2011.

Guys stop bitching about AMD. Their processors do not suck. The Athlon 64 was more expensive than the Pentium 4 HT because it was much faster. Also, I compared the Phenom II 965 BE w/Core i7 940 and the Core i7 wins in the majority of benchmarks, but the Phenom II wins in a few benchmarks (the Phenom II costs $195 and the Core i7 costs $500). Also, AMD has been using the AM2 socket since Athlon 64 so if you want to upgrade to a Phenom, your probably good to go.

AMD'S phenom 965 is only about 6 benchmarks down from the i7 920, which costs nearly £100 more. What are you going to buy? I sure would buy the AMD. (and I have done) I personally think most people just buy intel for the name more than anything.

I buy cause I like my machine to be tiny and run cold while being as powerful as it can be...

I still haven't switched to the i7 arch, and I do not plan to do so until the end of 2010. But my C2D E8500 run very cold and very efficiently in a microATX cubic case, even paired with a power hungry 9600GT...

core i7 is the one of few x86 processor that actually beat risc processor in performance per clock and overall power. others are core 2 and pentium dual core, xeon core.

a core 2 ex6800 is equal to dual core 7ghz powerpc g6.

Intel isn't perfect, you know. Sure its power efficient, but multithreading is a useless feature, and they are too slow. PowerPC processors are much better, they hog power, but are WAY faster than Intel.

core 2 and core i7 had beat crap out of ibm powerpc in last few years. even in performance per power core still gain upper hand, not to mention clock per cycle, core would destroy powerpc.

sure intel was bad, but it was only bad when pentium 4 was around. powerpc had even trouble in video gaming while pentium3 was easily handle any multimedia device/program back to the old day.

Its strange how Apple dissed the Pentium II and Pentium III about 10-13 years ago. And now they say the Core and Core 2 processors, based on the P6 microarchitecture , kick the PowerPC's ass. Imagine a Mac back then running on a Pentium III!!! :D

well pentium 2/3 were consider to be a "false" product that based on p6 architecture due to the scaling issue and lack of IPC(instruction per cycle). but it's all due to intel did not pay attention on p6 as p6 was just a temperary replacement of p5 before netburst can manage to release in 1998. however p6 prove to be more potential than netburst can ever possibly be. then we have core and neleham architecture later on :).

again, the fail of p2/p3 was the scaling issue.

About the Pentium D, I have seen "Dual core, Do more" with it. Plus I have the Pentium D 925 in the Dell XPS-400 and it handles Crysis on high settings just fine. Plus if it's a single package with two cores in it, it's dual core. Probably not on the same die, but that really doesn't matter. One more thing. GET A HEAT SINK!!!! That works wonders for cooling it off!!
