Perhaps you're the glaring exception, but I find that most often they're terms thrown around by those who lack the qualifications to utter them. Case in point - strictly speaking, the normal method of giving Holy Communion to the laity is itself "against the canons" which deal with the topic. This is of course beside the fact that the application of the canons belongs to the EPSICOPATE, not laymen.

Ummm...the Orthodox Church has NEVER had services only in Greek. Strictly speaking, the ideal (even if it doesn't usually happen very fast in practice) IS VERNACULAR. You're supposed to actually be able to understand what's going on in Church. Orthodoxy does not agree with the long standing (though now abandoned) practice of the Roman Catholics, who once insisted on the use of Latin in the services on principle (basically as a way of further centralizing Churches under the Pope.)

We kiss Icons as a sign of reverance and Love, not that we are worshiping the icon. It is a piece of wood, but what we honor is what is painted on the wood. The wood is made sacred by the Icon. The Icon is a window, It represents the person or event it depicts. It actually is better explained as the person or event of that icon is right there. Either the Saint stands before us or the energy of the event is before us.

If a (mainline)Protestant wants to be an Orthodox, first he or she will join the lessons and then get the Holy Chrismation. If they were heretics, why would His All Holiness, the Ecumenical Patriarchate and obviously the Ecumenical Patriarchate would say that their baptism was valid?

It is absurd to assert that the Protestants are heretics; if you read any of their theologians you will notice that they accept the Nicene creed, which is the touchstone of orthodox belief. Besides, it seems to me that while orthodoxy is important, orthopraxy is more important. "... if they have not love...", as St Paul says. adamantis: the beauty of orthodoxy is not only in music, language, style. The true beauty is its faith and its ecumenical message. I did not see something in this video to make me assume that either the clergy or the laity conducted the liturgy in an uncanonical way.

People REALLY need to be careful with those words - "canonical" or "uncanonical." Perhaps you're the glaring exception, but I find that most often they're terms thrown around by those who lack the qualifications to utter them. Case in point - strictly speaking, the normal method of giving Holy Communion to the laity is itself "against the canons" which deal with the topic. This is of course beside the fact that the application of the canons belongs to the EPSICOPATE, not laymen.

decimus: The essence of Orthodox Church is not the language. The liturgical texts of Orthodox Church are adapted to the language of the faithful. It is common knowledge that the slavic alphabet was constructed so that these texts might be translated for slavs. Music is also adapted to cultural style. What does not change in orthodoxy is tradition and dogma (whereas in catholicism....)

Ummm...the Orthodox Church has NEVER had services only in Greek. Strictly speaking, the ideal (even if it doesn't usually happen very fast in practice) IS VERNACULAR. You're supposed to actually be able to understand what's going on in Church. Orthodoxy does not agree with the long standing (though now abandoned) practice of the Roman Catholics, who once insisted on the use of Latin in the services on principle (basically as a way of further centralizing Churches under the Pope.)

What I was getting at, is the fact that the new generations of Greek Americans are not taught the language, which results in a predominantly English speaking congregation...My point was that the language and traditions should not be lost on the new generations here in America. Don't make it into more than it is.

When your ancestors took The Holy Orthodox Faith the Slavs via Saints Methodius and Cyril and then later to The Land of Rus...The Holy Gospels, Liturgy, and Faith would be translated to the venacular of the peoples...and this would repeat itself the world over...as Orthodox Christianity spread! You make no sense! Orthodox Christians DO Glorify God aside from our great traditions. When Protestants gather for learning and worship, they would not have anything to discuss if it weren't for the first followers and the Greek language that spread the New Testament.

We were taught in European History that the Orthodox Christianity accepted the Emperor as the head of the Church while the Catholic accepted the Pope, and Luther in Germany said Christ should be the head of the church. Why do you kiss icons and such?

We kiss Icons as a sign of reverance and Love, not that we are worshiping the icon. It is a piece of wood, but what we honor is what is painted on the wood. The wood is made sacred by the Icon. The Icon is a window, It represents the person or event it depicts. It actually is better explained as the person or event of that icon is right there. Either the Saint stands before us or the energy of the event is before us.
