Ay! Rip my heart out, Fritzi!!!! Such an inner equipoise. His diction, singing and acting were all so perfectly integrated. One of the great tragedies that he was lost right before his Met debut! Even though this is not "echt" because it's not in the correct vernacular, his quiet pathos is breathtaking. And do you hear how absolute his control of color and volume are throughout his range? His voice is pure putty in his hands, responding at will to the dictates of his emotions!!! Just otherworldy
Absolut einverstanden.
This is simply HAUNTING! The music, the nostalgic and mysteriously delicious black-and-white tone, Wunderlich's masterful and sympathetic performance, with that white face glowing in the middle of obscurity, gazing into an unknown future ... If anything, his static acting only adds to the whole magic of the scene.
I just cannot help watching and re-watching this masterpiece!
German or Russian, this has to be one of the definitive performances of this aria. It is clear that, for Wunderlich, Lenski has already decided to die rather than shoot at his friend who is "all my desire". The lack of movement is electrifyingly perfect. The acting is all in vocal colouration. A master artist with one of the all-time great voices serving a true eruption from the deep places in the collective unconscious. Who are we not to be touched and awed and humbled?
Thiis is so strange for me to hear this opera in German. :) But from the other hand, it prooves that this masterpiece is so close to the German nation that it was decided to translate it to make it closer to everyone. I wonder, if Russian version is popular there too.
People, don't quarrel. This sounds beautyful, and the whole german translation of the opera has good quality.
I don't think that the "interaction between music and text" is better, when the singer sings in original language with terrible accent and without really good understanding of the text. Contemporary performances of russian operas don't bring me any joy at all.
It is a shame that we losed him so early. What a noble vocality and musicality! I really and really wanted to see him live. Rest In Peace Mr. Wunderlich.
I like Gedda and Lemeshev more, but FW is an excellent Lensky nonetheless. As far as singing in German, it's better than singing in heavily accented Russian imho...
Perhaps you don't know that is was common usage to sing operas in local language at that time. Do you really think that the quality of an interpretation depends on the language? You are joking, aren't you?
Speak for yourself. And in the old days operas were always translated into the language of the country they were performed. Just like in normal theatre still today. They would never play Moliere in French in Stockholm. Pity today we have to read those silly upper titles and devide the view
It´s a tuff desition. Istill prefer the operas in original language. The text has always influneced the composition of the music and aven in a good transalation much of that iteraction between music and text is lost or falsed.
Just because you don't run around the stage like a headless chicken, it doesn't mean you aren't an actor. In fact, the measure of a truly great actor is the ability to hold one's audience spellbound without the least movement. Look at Callas! Do you think she ever ran around the stage? No! As an opera singer, she let her voice do it for her. Same with Wunderlich, in this particular case. And it's a soliloquy, for crying out loud! How much do you expect to move when you're doing a monologue?
Fritz is technically the best opera tenor ever in my opinion. His diction, pronunciation and runs are whats every singer strives for but few come close to this perfection. His recording of Granada is the best ever. His voice is golden in Deutsch as was Lanza's was in english. His acting was fine. This aria calls for a solemn approach.A perfect leider artist also.Long live Fritz Wunderlich
This is seriously the best sung version on YouTube!!! Wunderlich's voice is so exciting to me--- at first I didn't like it a lot, as long as he really sings with a lot of internal space like he generally does here, I think it's incredibly beautiful.
Fritz Wunderlich could have sung in whatever language ... everything sounded just as it should, he transmitted all the emotions contained in the music. Bravo!!!
Not much of an actor was he? So what? Ah who cares if it's in German. I don't think I've heard this sung better. He just opens his mouth and lets the sound flow. No forcing, pushing, or anything. And what wonderful musicality. The sound floats...notice how no tenor of today has a sound that 'floats'. Because they all force and holler...good for them. Bravo Wunderlich.
I totally agree with your comment. This is the best version I've ever heard. Wunderlich barely moves, yet he is able to project such depth of emotion. He seems to act through his voice. I was totally absorbed watching.
Exactly right. Opera would be much better with more "park and bark" and fewer gymnastics. I'm not rich, I can't go often to the opera, but when I do I want beautiful singing and not some director's conception. Anyway, FW has so much character in his voice (as would probably not have been the case if he had sung it in Russian), that its all the acting you need in a soliloqui. (I didn't spell that right). There has never been another singer with so much power of characterization in opera.
Maravilloso.
he hardly translated it - it was just much more usual to sing in the "local" language than the original in those days (especially slavic pieces). Even up to twenty years ago the opera school in Vienna performed all their productions in German! Sounds weird, but that's how it was. Sure, it can be annoying but there is also alot of sense in it - it can be quite refreshing to be able to understand an opera without surtitles.
Was there ever a more beautiful tenor voice? And it's not just his voice. Such wonderful expression. Such musicality. What an artist the world lost when he died so young.

Russians actually did the same: all the italian, german, french etc. operas were sung in Russian. Which is at least the same degree of weirdness. :-)
Anyway, rare Russian performer could have the same vocal level and beauty and subtlety of interpretation Wunderlich shows here.... Hats off....
