I thought Meat Leaf did okay with this song while I admit he was flat at parts, so was she so I still think that was as beautiful as it could get. And I felt so much emotion through Katherine's performance that it raises it from mediocre to great.
meat loaf only did bad cause it was live and he is used to recording then editing. him and marion raven did a good job if you would look that up as well as this video
@halvor311 Yep he is awesome!! It sounds like he was sick here like he had trouble breathing but you know at leas he sang rather than lip it like so many others do.
Katharine has yet to top this performance (although she has come close quite a few times) what with all the dramatics and emotions and whatnot. Beautiful. Absolutely beautiful!
meatloaf is the best he has been around over 30 yrs and best known for his movies and Yes he can singgggggggg his assssssss off check his video singing this songggg!!
wow, this was one of the best performances on American Idol. and I love how they both didn't just sing the song, but actually acted it out. Meatloaf did great for someone who has really bad stage fright. And Katharine McPhee, as always, was fantastic.
my favorite performance by Katharine McPhee. Too bad the ear piece had no feedback. It would have been the best performance of all seasons & I didn't like McPhee before this performance and Over the Rainbow.
You're dumb....of course no one can sing the song like her....they are not her....that is what we call being individuals with unique talent....I don't care for Meat Loaf bc I don't know his music, but Katharine did an amazing job. A performance full of the passion and drama that this song needs.
@mabaker This song was actually written for Meatloaf in 1986 to use on Bat 2 but he went with I"d Do Anything For Love instead and decided to save this one for Bat 3. It was recorded by Pandora's Box originally in 1989 and the Celion in 1996 each singer has their own style
This song was written by Jim Steinman for Meatloaf ( born Marvin Aday since changed to Micheal) to record on Bat Out of Hell 2. Meat says his shakiness in the first verse was due to no feedback from his earpiece. This is actually my favorite American Idol performance ever, very powerful duet vocals mixed with dramatic theatrical presentation. I am amazed by what mixed reviews it received at the time and judging from what I read here is still receiving to this day.
I love this performance, I love both of them. The fact that they are so different is one of the things that make it work. No need to knock Meatloaf, he had just had heart surgery a few weeks before this and he suffers from horendous stage fright yet still I think he was the perfect foil to Katharine. Love them both and enjoy, no need to bash one or the other. Oh - if you don't like Katharine in this then there is no hope for you as a human being.
Didn't Meatloaf originally write this song? I loved Celine Dion's version of it, but Katharine did a wonderful job. Meatloaf struggled because of sound problems, and even so, once he had Katharine to gauge his own voice, it was a great duet. Part of the charm of Meatloaf is that he's over the top. He's a shadow of his old self, but he's still pretty good. He's an amazing songwriter and very talented. This was a great performance.
Meatloaf did write the song, sung originally by Celine Dion. He's an amazing songwriter. He did the song about the dashboard. Anyway, once she started singing, I think the two of them sounded great together. He's nothing like he used to be, but he used to be a very heavy drug user, if I remember correctly. If you notice, he had a very, um, Ozzie-esque quality to his solo at the beginning.
never heard of her before, shes got a great voice, meatloaf sounds a bit shaky in this compared to what he is usually like, but give him a break for fuck sake hes a legend, he cant be great forever! but he got better as the song went on. she suits the song, and sings well... but shes no leona
She should have done her duet with Tony Bennett. That would have been amazing; They could have done a fun, swing version of "THey Can't Take That Away from Me."
OMG this meatlofe guy is totally funny he did overdo it and he was totally shaking while singing, thinking that cool when he totally looked like a moron
he was not named meatloaf at birth! and i want to see how long her 15 minutes will last! i want to see if she will sell 50 million albums. meatloaf is a legend
he's better then ever he is 60 yrs old and it's not because he had a makeover lol
WOW...all of you people that say he sounds phenomenal know NOTHING about music lol....he is SOOO off and he's throwing Kat off too. He is just SO SO horrible!
the whole 'outsinging'/competive thing is what makes this show so utterly miserable... that said, meatloaf sounds like he's parodying himself, it sounds like a joke.... he so overdoes it, he should have just masturbtated on stage to make it complete
I'm sorry but have to disagree with these others! The legendary "Meat" was phenomenal~ I think he still "has it" after all these years! I thought his "key and pitch" was perfect for this duo.
While Pandora's Box may have done it's own rendition of the song, the song was orignianlly written by Jim Steinman, you know, "that guy" that produced all of Meatloaf's albums and singlehandedly propelled him into rock greatness. Steinman produced for both Pandora's Box and Meatloaf so they are equally original in premise.
Super lied.. aber die alte hätte echt nicht sein müssen. passt einfach nicht zu meatloaf stimme finde ich.. Fazit: Meatloaf wie immer gut video auch super... nur WTF macht die olle da!
He said on the Howard Stern show that he had no audio in his earpiece for the first half of the song. He could not hear the music and therefore could not really find his pitch.
she sucks, she didn't even look at him or tried to put any feeling in it... plus this whole song sucks as a duet... meatloaf didn't care anyway he didn't need to impress anyone... I still think he's awesome ^^ \m/
First, Katharine put more emotion into this song than you've probably felt in your life. Second, please stop making excuses for Meatloaf's awful performance. He didn't suck because he didn't care; he sucked because he isn't a very good singer. Kat did her share on this; Meatloaf is the one who wasn't pulling his weight.
Meat Loaf's ear-piece monitor was not working until after the second line of the song, so he did not have the music to sing along to. Thus the crappy beginning. I think Marion Raven is much better at this song than McPhee, who admittedly did not understand the song. She also later sad that she did not know who Meat Loaf was.
That is the most pathetic vocal performance on the entire seiries by Meatloaf. He almost passed out at the begining then near the end he sounded like an infant getting beat to death with a cat.
Um, I heard Meatloaf was having some health problems that night...and I wouldn't doubt it, man rocks. With his past, he's allowed far worse than this.
Though McPhee definitely knocked it out of the park.
This is not Meatloafs best performance. But he is an awesome singer! And I pay no attention toAmerican Idol, but this girl is amazing in this song. I'd like her to be on Bat Out Of Hell 3. This is just beautiful.
I don't think he was awful. Maybe from a technical standpoint, he wasn't very good. But I think it's more important to appreciate this performance as a performance and not just a vocal. Plus, his ragged, shaky vocals meshed well with Kat's pristine vocals. Just my opinion
Or why not let people like what they want without some jacked up ponce trying to come off as a jaded Rolling Stone writer. You're not that important enough to tell us what we can like.
Utterly fantastic performance!!! Just hear how two powerful voices match perfectly eachother. Katharine shows an incredible vocal range and truly confirm that she can sing every music style.
Meat Loaf has been a legend for a long time, hope Kat will be that in near future.
This is one of Kat's best performances. To learn how to just with someone like Meatloaf and stay in tune in just a matter of days, is simply FABULOUS. Kat was born a star.
yeah CelineDionFan you're right, she should've done this song during the competition by herself! I don't think she could have sung it any better than she did, it was perfect!
This was the best performance of the night. I love how it cuts to Katharine and her voice is so clear and powerful. Katharine McPhee in one word: AMAZING!
Kat's voice is no different to anyone elses. She can sing-it doesn't sound unusual though. Despite what anyone says about Meat, though can't say he's just normal.
i couldnt belive my eyes when i read all thoose messages."meat loaf sucks","who is meat loaf","she outsang him" you really must have serious problems with ur ears and also with ur eyes..MEAT LOAF WAS ABSOLUTELY COOL ON THIS perfomance..just like katharine..they really signed cool together..
This performance was absolutely incredible. It really showed why Katharine had made it so far in American Idol. Her voice is outstanding && she would make such a wonderful actress. I've never heard of this Meatloaf guy... but he didn't sound too well. But I still love watching this performance anyway!
She and Meatloaf stole the show that night. This was wonderful. When I heard her sing this I knew America had gotten it right when they rewarded her with 2nd spot
AMAZING performance. Katharine sings so professionally in this one, Meatloaf sounded ok because he was VERY sick that day. But this is still a great performance afterall
Just a side note.....type Meatloaf in the "Search" and watch Paradise, Bat Out of Hell, and 2 Out of 3 Ain't Bad! You will see the true Meatloaf at his best!
For those who don't know Meatloaf this was the authentic Meatloaf that we all know and love from the late 70's early 80's! He was awesome then and still has it. You just need to be an oldtimer like me! LOL
Doesn't anyone remember Paradise By The Dashboard Light????? Brings back memories of Jr. High & High School for me!!!
Kat was great in this with or without Meatloaf....but I must say, it was GREAT seeing him again!
Honestly, I liked both of them. I like how tortured he sounded and how pristine Kat sounded. Both of them played their roles well. You might have to use a little imagination, but that was a great performance. Loved it.
meatloaf was awesome! been wanting to watch this performance. Anyone who knows anything about meatloaf and the way he performs, knows that he always does a song as if its a broadway kinda show. It full and complete and he is just so intune with the music and focuses on the performance so much its like he's inna zone.
meatloaf wat kind of name is that?? im so proud of kat shes doing grest i like the song. im a fan but there are moments where her voice messes up but i love her im a true blu mcphan. at first i didnt like her i liked lisa and paris but when i heard her sing one good time i loved her shes the best not the best american idol kelly is she the best and u all know in telling the truth i dont like more than i like kat but she has did better then all of them so far
You're speaking rubbish. He sang it well. He held back as it was her performance that counted. If he'd have performed like he does at his own shows, he'd have wiped the stage of her. Meat did the BROADWAY thing; Katharine couldn't even interact with him. She looked lost!
This could have been an amazing performance if Meatloaf would have shut up. I don't think he sang one note in tune. This would have been unbearable to watch if Katharine hadn't somewhat saved the performance. Celine's version is the ultimate and Kat could have done a great job by herself because her voice reminds me of Celine's at times anyway. He should just give up on singing and go eat him some meatloaf. LOL!!! I'm so corny!

You're speaking rubbish. He sang it well. He held back as it was her performance that counted. If he'd have performed like he does at his own shows, he'd have wiped the stage of her. Meat did the BROADWAY thing; Katharine couldn't even interact with him. She looked lost!

Meat loaf seemed like a weirdo...but Katharine did a good BROADWAY sort of thing!.

Katharine should've sang this song during the actual show by herself!! It would've been AMAZING!!

Yeah...Katharine could've completly had an amazing performance...but meatloaf...kinda ruined it.

Katharine totally saved this performance.
She sounds Amazing! And it is so amazing
that she was able to stay on key- with him
all over the place.
